I have Pcos, but my symptoms have recently flipped from no period for over a year, to bleeding heavily 3 weeks of the month. My gynea doctor thinks I need both hormonal and non hormonal treatment so has prescribed mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid, and the mini pill.

He did warn me that the mini pill is linked to weight gain and I'm currently mid weightloss so want to avoid it. He told me that the Mirena is probably my best option over all however I have heard alot of negative things recently. What are your general opinions/experiences on it (and is it painful)?

It's fantastic, I'd highly recommend it. Much less bleeding, usually none. Less period pain. No sign of the negative emotional effects of the pill and mini pill. There is some brief pain when it goes in, but then it's there for 5 years and it's totally hassle free.

Love it. I’m on my 2nd one, using it with HRT now. No periods for 7 years - bliss.

I lost weight after having a Mirena.

I also lost weight by counting calories despite a Mirena and apart from some spotting in the first few months, no side effects at all except some hormonal spots on my jawline every 4 weeks. Haven't had a period in years Smile

The Mirena is a miracle for me after a lifetime of heavy and painful periods.
No side effects.

I’m currently awaiting a scan next week to see if it’s embedded itself into my womb as have had constant cramps and bleeding for about 2 months now. Had it in 10 months (inserted 4 months post DD2) and periods have been heavier than ever and still regular (before this bleeding episode). Lost sex drive and put on half a stone despite changing any eating/exercise habits. Cannot wait to have it out and go back on depo which works for me! X

I don't know what you've heard, but I've had one 11 years (not the same one, obviously...) and it's absolutely fantastic. No periods to speak of, no pain, no worries about falling pregnant, no worse to get fitted than having a smear. What's not to like?

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 04/05/2019 22:50

I had a horrific experience from insertion (utter agony and struggled to drive or walk the same day) to pain for the full 6 months and then a 1 and a half hour rummage around to remove it when it had migrated. Couple that with a refusal to remove and a feeling of utter helplessness and no control over what was happening with my own body and I can safely say I will never never have another again.

My copper coil fell down and stabbed my DP, was a right fuss to locate it and have it out (3 months it took!). Then had a mirena fitted, and after not getting on with every other kind of contraception, I really like this one. Annoying bleeding at first but insertion didn't hurt at all and had no issues with it. Lost weight and my skin has cleared up massively.
