I have Pcos, but my symptoms have recently flipped from no period for over a year, to bleeding heavily 3 weeks of the month. My gynea doctor thinks I need both hormonal and non hormonal treatment so has prescribed mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid, and the mini pill.

He did warn me that the mini pill is linked to weight gain and I'm currently mid weightloss so want to avoid it. He told me that the Mirena is probably my best option over all however I have heard alot of negative things recently. What are your general opinions/experiences on it (and is it painful)?

I’m on my 2nd one. No periods, no pain.

ButDoYouAvocado · 17/01/2019 21:40

I'm.on my erd. Amazing. No periods no side effects. Every friend of mine ive recommended it to has had a horrendous time with it though. Endless cramps and periods etc.

CarolineForbes · 17/01/2019 21:41

I’m on my second. Worst part for me was cramping for about five days post insertion when I got my second done recently. However the pain was no worse than what my terrible periods used to be like anyway! I had very heavy periods and gushing bleeding pre mirena. First mirena I had 1 period then no more for about three years (bliss and life changing!) I then started getting about four or five light periods a year. Recently got my new mirena and back to no periods.
For me and the symptoms that used to blight my life this is the best option and I will continue to use it. As some PPs said though everyone’s different so you do just really need to try it before you can really know.

Love it. No periods - bonanza!

Itsmenotyouisntit · 17/01/2019 21:46

I just had mine fitted on Tuesday after having my copper coil removed (same day). I only had the copper one for less than a year and was having fortnight long periods whilst it was in place. I was also advised that it may help with my (awful) pmt symtoms so thought it was worth a shot. It's early days so I can't really comment on the success of it but from what I've read it really does vary from person to person. I had my copper coil removed then the mirina fitted, I'm not going to lie but I found having it fitted really painful, I actually screamed which was embarrassing 😳 BUT the doctor didn't tell me she was putting it in so I wasn't really sure what was happening! I'm sure I have an overly sensitive cervix because I doubt it should have hurt as much as that, having the copper one fitted was just as bad too.
I bled quite a bit on the day but that has stopped and I have a bit of cramping but its settleing down.. fingers crossed it's a success! I really hope so as this is my last chance with contraception as nothing else works for me.
As bad as I described the general fitting, it's over very quickly so if you do decide to go for it don't be put off by that. It may be a game changer for you. I'd say it's worth a go. (Lets see if I'm saying that in 6 months time though eh 🙄😁..)

My experience was that it was a life saver. It didn’t have periods I had a15 day tidal wave! Options were hysterectomy or Mirena. I chos the latter.

Within 2 months I went from tidal wave to nothing, nada, zilch! Just wonderful!

Busybusybust · 17/01/2019 21:49

Oh, and no side effects either

Avis7 · 17/01/2019 22:11

Love it. I'm on my second and hope to continue with it until menopause. No pain on either insertion or on removal, no cramps following insertion. I haven't had a period in ten years and it's made such a difference to my quality of life.

Maelstrop · 17/01/2019 22:13

Love mine, although it took ages to ‘settle’. I have, however, totally lost my libido! I was in a lot of pain previously, tho, so needed to do something.

Rhinosaur · 17/01/2019 22:38

I had mine put in to help with heavy periods over 2 years ago and wouldn’t look back. It was painful going in but they also did a biopsy of the womb lining at the same time so that could have been why.

I rarely have periods and it’s brilliant!

Darkstar4855 · 17/01/2019 22:47

Loved it: six months of mild spotting and then no periods for six years. Had mine out to have a baby but will be getting another one afterwards.

DaphneDiligaf · 17/01/2019 22:52

Best thing ever for me.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/01/2019 23:04

My friend has it and thinks its fab, no periods and no side effects

I had it fitted, came out in the most horrendous cystic acne and it was a bloodbath when they tried to fit it

flirtygirl · 17/01/2019 23:06

I would never have another one. I was very hormonal and the massive and quick weight gain was awful.

brookshelley · 17/01/2019 23:06

Very happy with mine and have had the great side effects of any hormonal BC I’ve tried. I got some bad acne in the first month after fitting but it went away. Nothing else. Love it!

PurpleWithRed · 17/01/2019 23:08

I have typed this so many times now - devoted fan, had them since 1994, period free, now using it as part of my hrt. No problems with fitting or removal. Highly recommended by me.

ScienceIsTruth · 17/01/2019 23:09

Hate it, and they're refusing to remove it. Haven't been able to take it out myself yet.
Got it for the same reasons toy want itty, but it's never worked and it's left me with no libido and serious mood swings.

ScienceIsTruth · 17/01/2019 23:11

*you want it.

By not working, I mean, I'm still bleeding almost constantly (just not as heavily).

Riotingbananas · 17/01/2019 23:14

Completely life changing for me, I wish they had been available much sooner, so many years of suffering would have been prevented.

OnlineAlienator · 17/01/2019 23:16

Horrific. Near constant pain + longer and heavier periods. Took mine out myself in desperation and never looked back.

ScienceIsTruth · 17/01/2019 23:20

How on earth has anyone managed to take it out themselves? I don't seem to be able to get anywhere near mine.

Hotfootit · 17/01/2019 23:47

I hated the Mirena. I had chronic thrush for the whole time it was in. I’d had thrush twice in the 30 years prior to getting the coil and I haven’t had it once since it was removed.

heidipi · 17/01/2019 23:56

It has been brilliant for me - insertion was kind of like a slightly prolonged smear test, bit sore for rest of the day, spotting for a few months afterwards but that has been miles better than the heavy periods I had before, now get a bit of spotting instead of a period but that's all. No side effects that I'm aware of. Mine will be in for another 18 months I think, not sure if I'll need another as I'll be 51 by then. It's been amazing for solving period problems, along with day & night contact lenses it's a tiny miracle I wouldn't want to be without!

KonekoBasu · 18/01/2019 00:07

I had cramps for a couple of days after it was fitted, and the fitting was not fun. I've had it in for about a year now, my periods are next to nothing, my anxiety is no worse but no better, I have gained weight but tbh I'm not sure if that's due to the mirena or bad eating during a very stressful year.

On balance the benefits out weigh the slight drawbacks of slightly worse cramps and greasier hair.

MitziK · 18/01/2019 00:40

I put on more weight with the mirena than I did on high doses of steroids - and the steroid weight was easier to lose. In addition, the strings cut my then partner a couple of times.

Loved not having periods, though.
