Why haven't I lost any weight ? I've been so good.

Since Christmas I've hardly had a drink, no snacks, been to yoga and pilates, or walked every day (and walked to work every day 4 miles return).

I've eaten loads of veg and cut down on carbs.

No Christmas choc, no left over Baileys....

"Wails to the sky!"

RhiWrites

Thanks. I've been stocking up on mushrooms and cauliflower. I think after eating so much my stomach is huge and my hormones are so out of sink. I am hoping my body can readust but part of it is realising hunger is normal and not to snack, even on vegetables, all day long! If I could I'd eat massive bowl fulls of vegetables all day!

But you're right; fibre is definitely better than sugar. Sugar is the blinking devil.

OutPinked · 17/01/2019 19:36

Portion control and calorie counting are vital. It’s so easy to eat healthy but eat too much healthy food and not realise the calories.

PeridotCricket · 17/01/2019 19:36

I’m not saying it’s impossible to lose weight after menopause....just I’m finding it harder than I used to to shift s bit after Christmas...

Please list what you have actually eaten.

halfwitpicker · 17/01/2019 19:39

If your tdee is 1500 and you eat 1500, you won't lose.

FixTheBone · 17/01/2019 19:40

In the opposite vein, it is possible to lose lots of weight and eat total crap if you only eat tiny portions.

I've lost two stone in a year - exactly as planned by counting calories. I eat the exact same meals as I always did, just much smaller portions.

Thesuzle · 17/01/2019 19:41

I got a shock this morning ,, there is sugar in cornflakes ! Bloody hell, thought i was good avoiding the musli...

BIWI · 17/01/2019 19:44

All cereal is sugar. Because it's carbohydrate, which is sugar as far as your body is concerned!

ShirleyPhallus · 17/01/2019 19:44

Christ there is some absolute crap being spouted in this thread 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sure the slimming world mugs will be along soon!

Yup. You could just eat 4 mars bars per day and you'd lose.

I got to and maintained being underweight for a year on toast and chocolate. I wish I could do it again but these days I find it too addictive and would overeat on it. Aww they were the days!!

LemonTT · 17/01/2019 20:32

Over 50 myself. To lose weight I need to cut out rubbish food and up exercise by c1-2 hours of cardio per week (boring). I don't usually do a lot of cardio, but I do regular resistance and weight training.

Desperation might mean I run, sprints and a couple of 5Ks (shudder). This really works for me but its not my favourite form of exercise so is a last resort.

I quickly see the difference but my starting point is that I have a lot of muscle already. It helps counter balances the aging process.

Water retention usually masks weight loss and can be caused by hormones and changes in diet and exercise. Weigh yourself less frequently and monitor size change.

You need to manage your diet, healthier not just less. I agree with the PT, you aren't doing enough of the right exercise to lose weight.

KatharinaRosalie · 17/01/2019 20:50

Have you seen the Secret Eaters? People were keeping food diaries and claiming they were eating for example 1400 kcal, and could not understand why they were not losing any weight. I remember one guy claiming that on most days, he clearly does not eat enough. But when followed, they all ate usually at least double of what they themselves counted.

PeridotCricket · 17/01/2019 21:19

So from this I’ve taken away...

Yoga isn’t enough exercise to lose weight...or tone
It takes longer than three weeks to see a difference
Calorie count
Eat way less than you think you need

You still haven't shared what you're actually eating!

ShirleyPhallus · 17/01/2019 21:28

The word “tone” is really misleading - what people mean is build muscle and lose fat. Which you can only do from lifting heavy weights and following a controlled diet. And is hard to do.

Jaimx86 · 17/01/2019 23:02

Notmyname, you look amazing. I agree with you that yoga does fine you up. My arms have never been as toned as when I started daily headstands!

Jaimx86 · 17/01/2019 23:03

^fine > tone

YeOldeTrout · 17/01/2019 23:13

I've honestly wondered what that word 'tone' was supposed to mean. So thanks for that (sincere). I thought it had to do with not having visible cellulite, but fairly fuzzy word, really.

BangingOn · 18/01/2019 06:43

What’s the most accurate way of calculating your TDEE? Different websites give me conflicting values.

Mummadeeze · 18/01/2019 07:00

I was you back in May. Particularly upped to loads of walking and was totally good with the healthy eating. It took 3-4 weeks to start working. Felt like my body was stubborn for a while but gave in in the end! Have lost 2 stone ish now but have got stuck on another plateau for a while again. What I would say is at least I am not putting on weight right now and I will not give up. I suspect I will start losing again soon.

HariboLecter · 18/01/2019 07:09

Can't remember which poster said it upthread but muscle does NOT weigh more than fat.

1lb muscle = 1lb fat

1lb fat DOES have a greater volume than muscle though.

Good luck with your weight loss journey OP.

HariboLecter · 18/01/2019 07:11

Oops just seen muscle v fat already explained. Sorry.
Can I go back to bed?

feelingverylazytoday · 18/01/2019 07:30

ShirleyPhallus you don't have to lift heavy weights to get toned. I've done it through a lot of swimming, and by eating 'normal' food, including tons of bread.

MashedSpud · 18/01/2019 07:35

Use my fitness pal app and get your tdee, even if it’s just for a week because it teaches you how easy it is to eat over your calorie limit and you’d be surprised how some foods have more calories than you think like dates and dried apricots. I used to have a treat of three digestives with a tea, not realising I’d just added almost 300 calories.

One pound of weight = 3500 calories so if you’re eating over your tdee by 500 unused calories per day, in a week you’ll gain one pound. This easier than you think if you go by the guidelines of 2k calories. In order to lose weight I have to eat just under 1400.
