For example the first choice holiday advice go MAHOOSIVE with the family VAYCAYS. BIG KAHOONAHS ON THE BEACH.

A journalist yesterday described Westminister thus - ‘The world’s most densely betwatted space at the best of times’ loved the made up word betwatted here.

Cafeaulait27 · 18/01/2019 00:33

Oh and when actual grown ups say/type ‘brought’ when they mean bought.

And ‘preform’ instead of perform.

I realise I’m totally missing the point of this thread.

jobbyjobson · 18/01/2019 00:33

I hate the new way of saying something's been released ie Adele's new single has just dropped 😡😡

Slatterna · 18/01/2019 01:01

I hate 'gorjus'. "Your gorjus hun". Or 'gawjus' shudder

'Bants'. Ick.

BetsyBigNose · 18/01/2019 01:38

Using the word super in front of every other bloody word;

It was super snowy today!

That curry was super spicy!

This thread is making me super itchy... although also super amused!

Saying that you 'ship' something or someone. I think it means to worship, envy or aspire to have/be like something or someone. I've seen or heard it in these contexts:

You ship that guy from Hollyoaks, don't you?!

I totally ship Harry and Meghan's relationship!

Anyone else ship Kim K's new purse? (That's another one: purse instead of handbag...)

I realise I've totally missed the point of the thread being new, made up words and have instead gone for words where their meaning is being entirely changed, soz huns! Envy (not envy: vomit)

We do have some made up words/phrases we only use at home, just me, DH and the DCs, most of which have come from the DC when they were tiny and seemed sweet or funny at the time and have just stuck:

Toe houses = Socks

Eb-lows = Elbows

'William-Bradleys' = Arm pits (Brad Pitt's full name is William Bradley Pitt)

DarienGap · 18/01/2019 01:50

I like snaccident. It’s the first time I’ve heard it.

PickledChutney · 18/01/2019 06:15

Woke!

Sillybilly1234 · 18/01/2019 06:48

Furbaby. Aaagggghhhh.

Love dogs but hate hate hate this word.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/01/2019 07:13

I don’t mind most of these words. I can deal with the likes of staycation and coworkers because I can see the meaning there.
Wtf are stupid words like famalam and holibobs meant for? As for nom nom nom, yuk. If you want people to imagine you as a pig at a trough, go ahead.

MinesaPinot · 18/01/2019 09:19

My mum (who's 82) always says something is 'too dear' when she means it's expensive, and has done ever since I can remember.

I loathe the fact that everything now seems to be 'cute' - when did that happen???

And the habit that (usually) the tabloids have of linking celebrity names ie Brangelina or HMegz irritates me beyond belief.

mommymooo · 18/01/2019 09:43

Oh got there's a few more I've realised I hate too.
Furbaby no you idiot it's a dog/cat
Soz no it's sorry.
Hun. Blood boiling.
My bad. Again it's sorry.

Loving this thread. There is so many that make my blood pressure rise.

I know and understand that language changes and evolves, but there can still be certain phases and new slang that grinds you up the wrong way.

How many more of these same old "What words do we hate? Let's find something new to hate and moan about!!" threads do we have to endure??

ohhelpohnoitsa · 18/01/2019 09:59

Similar grammatical hate (complete loathing) here, where women refer to designer handbags as 'she' or 'her' e.g. taking her out for dinner, isn't she a beauty. Grown women, I HATE it.

Horsewithnomane · 18/01/2019 10:01

I hate when "gender" is used when what is meant is "sex".

And yeah, "cis" is a bugger.

Horsewithnomane · 18/01/2019 10:05

How many more of these same old "What words do we hate? Let's find something new to hate and moan about!!" threads do we have to endure??

I'm new here and this is the first one I've seen. So I'm enjoying it. But more importantly, who is forcing you to "endure" this thread...?

I'd leave them - immediately!

mommymooo · 18/01/2019 10:09

@LidoDeck if you don't like them. Why come on here to moan. An HAVE to ENDURE such horror

caperplips · 18/01/2019 10:11

Unfortunately I know someone who regularly updates facebook about her:

famalam
hollibobs
bubba
mumma
doggos

Set my teeth on edge!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 18/01/2019 10:15

I hate "webinar". Makes me shudder. I was like this at first, it was a real rage word for me but, now I am involved with at least one a week, I'm kind of desensitized to it.

Mahoosive makes me twitch - probably because of the two people I know who use it on FB quite a lot.

I'm still fighting a battle of attrition with "invite" as a noun instead of "invitation".

I quite like "snaccident" though Grin

DontCallMeCharlotte · 18/01/2019 10:19

And the habit that (usually) the tabloids have of linking celebrity names ie Brangelina or HMegz irritates me beyond belief.

Surely it should be HaMegs. Or as we call it, Brunch.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 18/01/2019 10:32

Staycation? Erm isn't that the old fashioned 'Day/s out'.

'Woke' winds me up too.

Cardiffclare88 · 18/01/2019 10:48

Vajayjay!

doritad · 18/01/2019 10:56

Wallah which I presume means voilà

Sweetpea55 · 18/01/2019 11:33

Learning some new words here,,iv never heard of 'spenny'

I hate 'mindset,,' skillset.' '.gobsmacked.'.and' reaching out to you',,,urgh,,,,,makes my bum cheeks itch

YesSheCan · 18/01/2019 12:14

Holibobs

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 18/01/2019 12:18

The latest management speak bollocks (manspollox?) - "THINKING" as a noun.

"We're going to apply some THINKING to that"
"We need to flip their THINKING around"
"We've been able to really get under the skin of their THINKING"..

  • all, to my mind, meaning "nobody has done a bloody thing and we don't intend to either". And isn't the noun supposed to be Thought, anyway?

I find the 'craycray' and 'vaycay' business too Valley Girl for my liking, but since I spent a chunk of the 90s in a litany of barely-comprehensible Mancunian slang, I don't feel I can throw stones...
