To think Christmas songs don't make me feel sad? Blazing row with "d"p

Because I'm apparently lying when I said they don't make me feel sad or like I want to cry!

He's got so upset! Breathing out really hard while he was almost shouting at me. Telling me they're written to be sad and everyone feels sad when they hear silent night.

Apparently I'm just saying it to argue with him!!!! Do they make you sad?

I LOVE Silent Night. Induces wonderful feeling of tranquillity. Why on earth would it make me sad!?

AgentJohnson · 17/01/2019 00:13

*You don’t have a Christmas carol problem.
You have a Husband problem. *

This

If you’re at the point of questioning yourself about such an obvious gaslight, then it’s time to LTB. 2019 is the year to say goodbye to this abusive twat.

Lovethetimeyouhave · 17/01/2019 07:27

Well. He left without a word this morning. I think I may go out for when he is due home later

Am I supposed to cry listening to Slade?
This is fucking unhinged. Silent Night or O Holy Night can be moving if sung well...but sad? No.

He actually got angry about this?

  1. It’s January, why the hell is he getting upset about Christmas songs?
  2. What the ever living fuck!? Who the shit gets this worked up about how somebody else reacts to music!?
BlueCornishPixie · 17/01/2019 07:41

Are we talking Christmas carols or Christmas songs.

Some christmas carols are sad like the Coventry carol. They can be sad. But it's still an abnormal reaction

I don't want to say bin him, it really depends. Is he genuinely getting really wound up, in which case he could be upset about something else or something is getting to him. Sometimes when I was younger my brother used to disagree with me for the sake of it and it was the worst thing in the world, and I would react abnormally to any argument because I was so fed up if him arguing with me. Maybe he genuinely felt that you were disagreeing for the sake of it?

Or is it that he's trying to get an argument out of you. In which case he's being a twat.

Its hard to tell, it could be both sides.

BiscuitDrama · 17/01/2019 07:44

It doesn’t matter if most people find them sad or not. He’s saying you’re lying about how how feel, which is a different issue.

malificent7 · 17/01/2019 07:50

He sounds weird tbh.

ShatnersBassoon · 17/01/2019 07:53

A lot of them induce nostalgia, so they do make lots of people feel a bit sad. I don't think they're written to prompt those emotions though e.g. Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime makes me feel nostalgic!

waterleg · 17/01/2019 08:52

I like Christmas carols for the comforting nostalgia they give me, but commercial Christmas songs make me depressed. Pogues, Slade etc because I find Christmas itself depressing.

Your DH sounds pretty unpleasant though.

Willow2017 · 17/01/2019 09:38

he's eager to have a row. He'll get upset if I disagree with him over anything

Why are you with this control freak?
Why does he get to say how you should react to anything?
You have a dp problem not a Xmas song problem.
I would seriously have a hard think about what you are getting out of this relationship apart from arguments and being told how to live.

peachgreen · 17/01/2019 09:50

I just do not understand why people live this way. He sounds exhausting.

Pk37 · 17/01/2019 09:52

What a bizarre argument..

Gilead · 17/01/2019 09:52

Having lived in a marriage like this for over 20 years I'd run, far and fast! He could bring up stuff from ten and fifteen years before. Honestly it'll only get worse.

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 09:53

this is about more that how Christmas carols make you feel, isn't it? I mean, much more.

theWarOnPeace · 17/01/2019 09:55

He sounds like an emotionally unstable and abusive pig. Leave before you get stuck with him pregnant/married etc.

Onecabbage · 17/01/2019 10:01

The little boy that Santa forgot might reduce me to tears, but All I want for Christmas is you will always have me singing with joy.
I think the carols are oftentimes lovely, sometimes a bit sentimental but nonetheless still mostly uplifting (I’m atheist if that makes any difference )
Your dp sounds a bit crazy.

Eliza9917 · 17/01/2019 10:02

What's he like in general OP?

InspectorIkmen · 17/01/2019 10:09

Is this relationship bringing anything to your life OP? I'd struggle not to kick his ridiculous arse straight to the kerb this evening if I were you.

AllMYSmellySocks · 17/01/2019 10:12

No I don't feel sad, nostalgic maybe but not sad at all. He sounds unhinged to be getting so worked up about this.

Bekabeech · 17/01/2019 10:18

He'll get upset if I disagree with him over anything. He brought up something from ages ago straight after and I've left the room as I have to prepare lessons for work tomorrow and he just wants to fight.

This is a huge red flag!
To be honest it sounded a bit like ODD to me - or he is just an arse. I'd suggest you seriously re-evaluate this relationship, he doesn't sound worth it.

And then maybe Christmas Songs will always make you happy in future.
