Meal planning helped us too. Once a week and do the shopping list at the same time!

Tonight was slow cooker chilli.
Tomorrow is a chicken traybake
Friday is veggie sweet potato shepherds pie
Saturday salt and chilli chips and satay chicken
Sunday Katsu Curry and Spring Rolls.

Just planned out next week too.
Diet Coke Chicken
Freezer Chilli
Stuffed Pasta and Quorn Escalope
Lemon Chicken Tagine and Cous Cous
Freezer Shepherds Pie
“Tex Mex Pistols” (aka fajita steak wraps from a rock cook book “Dark Side of the Spoon” DP got me for Xmas)
Veggie Burgers and Wedges

The reason men leave it to the women to decide is they really don't care. Left to their own devices it would be cold beans from the can. It drives me mad. Why can they never make a decision?

I signed up with Simply Cook when they had a special deal on, and it's really good - none of the meals take longer than about 20 minutes to cook, they never have any weird ingredients that you can't get from the supermarket (or have in the store cupboard for a lot of them to be fair) and the recipes are never more than about 5 or 6 steps and we haven't had a bad one yet! They give us ideas for other meals as well and encourage us to branch out beyond our 'staple meals', which has been really nice too.

If anyone wants to try a box for £1, I can give you a code.
(Disclaimer, I get a cheap box too, but I have never seen boxes for £1 with any other codes).

We’re not too bad about eating the same dinner (apart from DD vegan) and we mostly always eat together now. When DCs were small, that wasn’t really feasible although we tried as much as possible.
In the past week we have had:
Thursday: garlic pasta with broccoli, chicken and mushrooms in creamy sauce (leave out chicken for vegan) + garlic bread
Friday: enchiladas (chicken or vegetable) salad and wedges
Saturday: chicken casserole, creamy white wine sauce with broccoli, carrots and potato croquettes (wee vegan was out for dinner!)
Sunday: homemade lasagne, salad & crusty bread/(vegan - cauliflower and chickpea curry from freezer, previous batch cook, rice etc)
Monday: Chinese style chicken curry & rice (vegan - sweet potato and onion curry & rice)
Tuesday: homemade pizza (no cheese for vegan)
Wednesday: fish & chips, peas and green beans/(vegan - veg stir fry + rice)
Thursday: Chilli ( beef or quorn/bean for vegan) & rice & flatbreads
Looking at this, it looks a bit chicken heavy - probably most weeks we’ll have an omelette or a lighter dinner of soup and a sandwich if we’re rushing out to an activity.
Feel we’re in a bit of a rut too though!

Sausages in a pyrex dish in the oven, chuck in some onions/peas/sweetcorn/peppers/mushrooms/green beans/broccoli etc, completely cover with gravy, stick some dumplings on top. Back in the oven. Go away and have a glass of wine. Dinners done. Delicious.

FoofFighter · 17/01/2019 10:31

Thick vegetable stew and dumplings tonight 🤗

FoofFighter · 17/01/2019 10:32

@Kab30 google it, it's a slimming world recipe

Can't stand meal planning.

I just have tortellini on standby, and make it up as I go along. Results in some interesting combinations, but saves meal planning, which even if I manage, I don't stick to.

It's my one area of spontanaeity.

BestestBrownies · 17/01/2019 10:52

@Iused2BanOptimist Hmmmmm.... I may have to try Quorn again then. I remember when it first came out We had to come up with a vegetarian recipe in Home Ec class. I used Quorn (which was new even to the teacher), and it was GRIM. Haven't gone near it since, but it's hopefully probably improved.

Going to give quinoa a go tonight.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/01/2019 10:54

I'm another meal planner here too. It saves money, there's far far less waste and it saves the having to think every day thing

Tonight it's beef stroganov with rice

Bloomcounty · 17/01/2019 12:19

This isn't meal planning, as such, but I write down our evening meals in a notebook every night. It helps me remember (as I have memory problems) what we've already had that week and make sure we have a bit of variety, but it also does kind of work as a planner as I can look back and get ideas. It's just a reporters notebook but it works a treat and sits on the kitchen counter all the time.

I also have a list per week of the things we need to eat (ie the chicken breasts are dated 20th) that are in the outside fridge (large one is in the garage) and when by. I can then make sure we don't waste expensive stuff.
