What time does your ten year old go to bed?

Interested to hear what sort of pre bedtime routines they have...or not.

My 10 year old is a NIGHTMARE at bedtime. We're in Oz and it's the summer holidays here. Naturally she wants to stay up later but it's getting silly now.

DH thinks it's because she has no routine. She did when she was smaller but it slipped as she grew. He thinks if she has a shower at the same time nightly, then some time to read in bed, she;ll be better because she knows what's coming.

Dc2 is 10 in March. They have lights off around 9 on school nights, although I’m sure they’re still awake at 10.

Weekends and holidays usually in bed for 10ish and lights off between then & 11 maybe.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 16/01/2019 13:27

Ds 10 in November goes at 830 and asleep in minutes.

AMomHasNoName · 16/01/2019 13:27

My daughter is 10 and although it's not a strict routine it normally goes something along the lines of a bath or wash , pjs , snack, maybe watch abit of tv or read then in bed for 9. She doesn't always have them in a specific order. But she knows bedtime is at 9. In the holidays she does stay up abit later if she wants but not by much.

FortunesFave · 16/01/2019 13:35

See I knew DD was going too late! She's often still refusing to sleep at 10.00pm and later. I turn her main light off...she has a very dim nightlight...and then when I've left, she turns it back on again!

I have a 10 year old who will be 11 in June.

In bed for nine. He then reads for a bit and lights off between 9.15 and 9.30.

He gets up around 7.15.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 16/01/2019 13:38

8pm school night. Sometimes 8.30 and about 9 at weekend

Kitsandkids · 16/01/2019 13:39

Mine are 10 and 11. They go up at 8 then I go up at 8.30 to read them a chapter of whatever book we’re reading and then I turn their lights off.

RiverTam · 16/01/2019 13:39

summer holidays DD (9) would be awake until gone 10 easily. She's always been a night owl. Term time we try to aim for lights out between 9 and 9.15 but it's anyone's guess if she'll actually go to sleep! We wake her at 7ish for school but she can still be firing on all cylinders at 9.

Sexnotgender · 16/01/2019 13:40

She’s now 15 but at 10 she was going around 8.30.

Even now at 15 she goes at 9.30 on a school night.

recently · 16/01/2019 13:41

I don't think 10 is late but it depends what time she has to get up. My 9 year olds go to bed at 9.30 and read till 10 (ds) or sleep from 9.30 (dd). They get up at 7.30.

megletthesecond · 16/01/2019 13:41

She's still bouncing around gone 10pm most nights. Short of giving her medication I've accepted it's how she is.

justasking111 · 16/01/2019 13:42

8pm, blackout blinds in the summer. You know they read for a bit, but they are chilling out.

DS is 17 he goes up of his own accord around 10pm.

Theonewiththecat · 16/01/2019 13:43

Dd is 9 and lights out on a school night is 9, she wakes up at 7.
On a weekend or school holidays it creeps to past 10 easily. But as long as she isn't moody the next day I'm not overly bothered.

Aebj · 16/01/2019 13:44

Ds1 is a night owl. Always has been at 10 during school holidays he would go to bed around 10-1030. School nights 9pm ( still that time term nights and he’s now 15!). He will get up late.
Ds 2 struggles past 9pm. He often wants to stay up later but will not make it past 9:30. He’s my early morning child. 8:30 is a very big sleep in for him.
It’s school holidays, it’s bloody hot at the moment! Let her sleep when she can

formerbabe · 16/01/2019 13:46

8.30 on a school night.

gingercat02 · 16/01/2019 13:56

In bed for 8:30 ish read til 9. Lights out then but he is frequently still awake for a bit (up for a wee/glass of water/11million other random reasons)

Atalune · 16/01/2019 13:58

unwind, pjs on and bedtime routine is started around 8pm and then up to bed for about 8.30 and lights out just after 9pm. That is on a school night.

DS used to have all sorts of trouble nodding off and get quite stressed about it so we have quite a relaxed routine which he dictates the pace of. But those timings are about right. Weekends are a bit later.

SuperNappyBaby · 16/01/2019 13:58

Maybe she doesn’t need as much sleep as others? Is she tired in school or at home?

My 9 year old functions very well on 9 hours sleep - asleep at 10.30, up at 7.30. I wax worried he wasn’t getting enough sleep but his teacher says henis perfectly ok on school - and he is full of energy at home after school too and in a good mood.

Knittink · 16/01/2019 14:00

8.30, read in bed lights out at 9. They definitely need a routine. Even adults benefit from having a regular bedtime routine- it's one of the first remedies suggested for insomnia.

scottishdiem · 16/01/2019 14:01

At 10 I was going to Scouts and other activities that often only finished at 9.15pm. So was hardly in bed before 10 at that age. I would also often read as well.

BlackInk · 16/01/2019 14:03

My DS is 9 1/2.

On a school night he goes up to bed at about 8 to 8:30pm (after bath/wash, teeth, reading his school book to me) and reads or listens to an audio book in bed. I go upstairs around half an hour later to say goodnight. I usually ask him to finish the chapter he's on, then settle down to sleep. I don't hassle him after this. Some nights I know he's still covertly reading under the covers at 10pm, other nights he's out like a light before 9. I often think he looks tired in the daytime, but I'm not going to punish him for reading :)

Weekends and holidays he goes up to bed a bit later and we sometimes watch a film or TV beforehand. Otherwise, no screens after about 6pm.

His 7yo sister has the same routine - she takes longer to get to sleep and never looks tired!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/01/2019 14:04

Also in Australia, and therefore in the holidays. I've relaxed bedtime because it's the holidays and because we're not rushing to get anywhere in the mornings, so DS1 can lie in if he wants to.
Normal bedtime for him is 9pm, but often as not it's nearer 9:30 or even later if there's a film on tv he's watching in the holidays.

He doesn't appear to be tired, unless he makes himself get up at 7am for some stupid tv show (which I do NOT encourage at all!)

He and DS2 have always been late birds though - even as babies, I couldn't get either of them down for the night before 8:30pm, or they'd wake up half an hour later and be awake for HOURS longer. They slept through til 7:30/8am though, so it suited me. They still do sleep til that time, given half a chance.

springtimeyet · 16/01/2019 14:06

During school, lights off at 8:30 as they get up at 6:15 and are often in school by 7:45 for pre school clubs.
During the holidays 9pm as they don't get up much before 7am.

southbucks77 · 16/01/2019 14:07

My 10 year old goes to bed at 7-7:30. We’re all sleepers (I’m in bed at 10). She does have a few later nights and is starting scouts tomorrow when she won’t be in bed until 9:30 but we’re dreading how tired it will make her.

Mari50 · 16/01/2019 14:11

Dd is 10 at the end of the month, she goes to bed about 8.30/9pm. In the summer holidays she was allowed to stay up and out playing til 10pm quite often as the nights are very light and it compensates for the shut in darkness we have in the winter.
