Aibu to take this iPhone deal?

Just after your advice Smile I have had the same phone for 3 years (iPhone 6s) and want to upgrade. I was going to buy an iPhone XS outright but first decided to ask my network provider what they could offer me:

iPhone XS 64gb
£0 upfront cost, 24 month contract at £55 per month
Unlimited calls/texts
100gb data
24 months Spotify premium (they have other options like amazon prime video)
Other Vodafone benefits like global roaming etc

My issues are that the monthly cost is higher than I wanted (I’m happy to pay upfront costs) and that I don’t need 100gb data (use about 20gb) but apparently they won’t discount this device on lower data tariffs. I have looked online and with this device, there isn’t really anything better online. Also, if I bought it outright I wouldn’t get a plan on the same calibre, as Spotify alone costs me £10 per month.

what are your thoughts?

If you're not married to apple, you can get a really good android phone for much cheaper! Maybe a Samsung? The new Nokia's are pretty decent too.

The thought of £55 a month or paying anything upfront would have me running lol

thisismeusernameything · 16/01/2019 12:17

i sat down and worked out the overall cost when I upgraded. It worked out £500 cheaper over two years to buy my phone and go sim only

HopefullyAnonymous · 16/01/2019 12:17

Try affordablemobiles.com first, I got a much better deal than my existing provider was willing to offer me

Scotsrule · 16/01/2019 12:20

If you can afford the phone outright you will get a much better sim only deal, and pay for Spotify and it will most likely be cheaper than the £55 quid a month - especially if you won’t use 100gb.

I get 20gb, unlimited texts and calls for £21 a month, Spotify is a tenner so there is £31. Means you aren’t tied to a contract either, you have much more flexibility as your needs change.

Plus Vodafone are the devil in disguise, sell you the world until you actually need them.

pineapplepenthouse · 16/01/2019 12:22

That sounds like a good deal to me if you’re ok paying that much monthly. I pay £43 and that’s for an iPhone 8, 10GB per month and that came with 3 months BT Sports. (I’d have preferred Spotify!)
I second affordablemobiles, that’s where I got mine but it’s also worth looking at others like buymobiles.net.
Also, if you have Quidco you can usually get good cash back on new mobile deals!

Fluffyunicorns · 16/01/2019 12:25

You can get the handset on 20 months interest free from the Apple store - I worked out it was cheaper to have this and a sim only contract. The spotify might make a difference though!

ButDoYouAvocado · 16/01/2019 12:26

I always buy my phone's outright and shop around for the cheapest SIM. Its always worked out cheaper plus I can chop and change supplier whenever I wish.

Firesuit · 16/01/2019 12:30

That wouldn't work for me. I spend £2.50 a month on phones and calls, so that's the most that any included are worth.

Spotify etc is worth nothing to me as I don't use mobile date for streaming media, I use my home internet.

I'd look at it as paying (55-2.50)*25=£1260 for a phone. Which as I usually buy a used Android one for £100 or £200, is six to twelve times as much as I usually pay for a phone.

Firesuit · 16/01/2019 12:31

Should have written "£2.50 a month on calls and data".

Sooverthemill · 16/01/2019 12:39

Buy the phone ( look at musicmagpie for a second hand refurbished model maybe) and use giffgaff for a sim. My sim costs £7.50 pm but I use WiFi when I can

Cherries101 · 16/01/2019 12:39

change to sim only and will get the phone via a monthly repayment 0 percent interest deal with apple.

curlycat · 16/01/2019 13:08

Don't go near Vodaphone. Customer service is non existent. Awful company.
Look on affordable mobiles. We got a good deal at Xmas for DD with O2

livs1987 · 16/01/2019 13:09

The phone costs £999 outright. The Vodafone offer works out £13.70 more expensive per month than buying it outright but it does include Spotify(£10) and I doubt I’d be able to find a 20gb minimum tariff for that price, so it’s not super awful

But at the same time it doesn’t feel like a good deal because the phone is so expensive to begin with! I have had a look online, haven’t found anything good so far.

I checked apple’s financing options but it’s not suitable for me

Fuck that. Crazy moulah

19lottie82 · 16/01/2019 13:14

It does seem like a good deal, take away the handset cost and the sim only costs £13 ish a month.

Look at quidco for cashback too.

Fatbutt · 16/01/2019 13:20

Have you had a look at Virgin? starts at £39 according to their site

Seriously avoid Voda like the plague!

Spanglybangles · 16/01/2019 13:25

That sounds ok to me considering the handset price and sim only cost for the calls/texts/data that you would get. In fact I’d say you are cheaper going with it. Also if you or someone in your friends/family group works for public sector or a number of other places, you could get the 15% VEA discount Vodafone offer those employees on your tariff. You can get it for a few people I believe. We use it as I’m NHS.

I’ve had no problem with Vodafone. Discovered a while ago they were charging us for paper bills when we don’t receive them, one phone all later and we were immediately credited the amount back, backdated over 2 years. They have always been really helpful to us. Maybe been lucky though. I do concede that there are cheaper providers, but we have lived in various rural areas where Vodafone have been the only provider with any coverage in our area, so just stuck with them. Always managed to negotiate a decent deal at upgrade time as well.

notapizzaeater · 16/01/2019 13:35

I've got a 3 sim and I get unlimited calls, texts and 30gb data which can be tethered for £13 a month

VioletCharlotte · 16/01/2019 13:42

Have you looked on uswitch? I always use that to check in getting the best deal on phones.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 16/01/2019 13:54

£1320 for a phone. Confused
Some people have money to burn.

homeishere · 16/01/2019 13:59

500 mins. Unlimited texts. 6GB data with monthly roll over of anything not used (I always have spare for the next month). £10 a month on ID Mobile (by carphone warehouse).

The companies lure you in with ‘free this and that’. Would you actually use the Spotify subscription? If not then you save £10 a month by not having it.

Bombardier25966 · 16/01/2019 14:04

What do you need/ want the phone for, apart from the obvious? What does this phone do that another does not?

badlydrawnperson · 16/01/2019 14:11

YABVU for giving so much money to Apple :)
