If 48% of the electorate wanted to remain surely a softer brexit is better than nothing? Those who are wanting to crash out are determined to risk our future for an outdated world view.

If remain had won 52:48 and the government had immediately started to transfer more powers to the EU, leavers would have been very upset
that makes no sense. That would never have happened

GrammarTeacher · 16/01/2019 07:24

Exactly there wouldn't have been a further transfer of powers we have a long history of using our veto to avoid that. It's why I never really understood the sovereignty argument.

Ragaroo · 16/01/2019 07:53

Leave is leave. I voted to cut ties with the EU so we can then rebuild them on OUR terms. I didn't vote leave for some shitty deal in which we still don't have control over all our policies and finances.

AllMYSmellySocks · 16/01/2019 07:56

This is why you we can't have a parliamentary democracy because this is SO unrealistic it's unbelievable. The general public simply shouldn't have been asked. The level of ignorance is staggering.

We can't cut all ties with the EU now or ever unless we want to turn ourself into South Korea and we can't rebuild our ties on our terms because we very very obviously do not have the power or sway. It's so beyond stupid it needs ignoring.

GrammarTeacher · 16/01/2019 07:57

Ragaroo. We have that control within the EU. Austerity is Tory policy not EU decreed for example. We also have a say in EU policy anyway!

scaryteacher · 16/01/2019 10:28

Grammar Lots of areas, where there would once have been a veto have moved to QMV, as will Article 50 (the text for that has yet to be published). The whole point about self amending treaties is that the rules can be changed as Poland found when they tried to block Tusk having a second term as President of the Council.

BeanTownNancy · 16/01/2019 11:18

Selfish in that they often tell people who have legitimate concerns about job security, food supply and supply of life-saving medications in the event of a "no deal" that they are fear-mongering and "everything will be fine" when no one can guarantee that. If there is a no deal Brexit and medications are not delivered, or the cost becomes too high for the NHS then some at-risk people will probably die. If you don't have concerns about that, you are selfish in my opinion, whatever your reasons for supporting Brexit are.

JudasPrudy · 16/01/2019 11:50

Brexiteers are naive at best. Mad, bad and dangerous at worst. Don't care about troubles starting up in Northern Ireland again? Have you considered that London will be a prime target for terrorist retribution because of Brexit?

ginghamstarfish · 16/01/2019 11:58

OP it's really tiresome to keep reading '48% of the electorate/population'.... blah blah. Please get the figures correct at least, the percentages should refer to those who actually voted. Those who could not be arsed to or spoiled their ballot do not deserve to have a say now - they had the chance and missed it.

MikeUniformMike · 16/01/2019 14:42

According to wikipedia my calculation for spoilt votes is incorrect.
I says 0.08%, which is 8 in every thousand.
