To think there's nothing wrong with zoo animals for a girl?

I'm expecting DC2, we have been led to believe from the scan that it is a little girl. We have DS already.

I went to John Lewis yesterday to pick up some baby night gowns for easy night changes. They were in the sale and the only ones they had were grey and white striped and zoo animals, in a set of two (one of each).

My mum and sister told me I couldn't buy them as they weren't 'girly' enough. My sister even went as far as to ask the assistant if they had any girl ones (which they didn't). I told them to stop being ridiculous and bought them anyway.

Mum wouldn't stop going on about how everyone would think I had a lovely little boy in those. Firstly, who gives a crap? and secondly - THEY ARE FOR NIGHT TIME! Also thirdly, DS was about 6 weeks old, dressed head to toe in blue and two people told me what a lovely little girl I had!

AIBU to think that zoo animals on a white background are unisex? And that it wouldn't have mattered even if they'd have been boy ones? FWIW I fully intent to dress DD in some of DSs old clothes, including a cute little baby grow with blue robots on, just because I like it! DD has plenty of time to assert her desire for pink sparkly clothes when she is older, which is her right and will be honored.

I think I bought the set you're talking about for my nephew precisely because it was lovely and neutral!

arethereanyleftatall · 15/01/2019 15:49

Your mum and your sister and being absurd.

arethereanyleftatall · 15/01/2019 15:49

Are

YANBU!

I hate this gendering of children's clothes. Total load of bollocks. Today my baby girl is wearing a pink floral baby grow (her granny bought her) with a green Gruffalo jumper. I am in a blue dress, my husband has a pink shirt on. Dress your daughter in what you like!

OneBiscuitAtATime · 15/01/2019 15:51

YANBU. As long as a garment is baby sized and shaped it is suitable for any baby. Sometimes my daughter gets mistaken for a boy because I prefer primary colours to pink. For some reason people are flustered when they get it wrong - DD (6 months) cares not a jot.

the99 · 15/01/2019 15:52

It sounds lovely and neutral.

Unfortunately people are obsessed by dressing girls up like fairies and unicorns at the minute.

DD is often dressed in her brother's hand-me-downs. A couple of weeks ago she was in red Paw patrol boots, jeans, a blue fleece, and a gruffallo hat when an elderly gentleman said "what a beautiful little girl"... she couldn't have looked anymore like a boy Grin

ZogTheOrangeDragon · 15/01/2019 15:52

You know full well that YANBU.

RiverTam · 15/01/2019 15:52

YANBU. Hyper genderization of childhood is such a bloody nonsense and I find it extraordinary how many adults buy (literally, of course) into it.

Thisonewilldo · 15/01/2019 15:52

They sound unisex to me.

My daughter wore a lot of blue as a baby and a lot of 'boys' babygrows with tractors etc because my eldest was a boy and I wanted to re-use what I already had.

They are babies it really doesn't matter what they wear as long as it is practical.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/01/2019 15:52

I bought that set because it was neutral but if Mum/Dad wanted to make it more boy/girl it would go with a blue/pink cardigan it that's what they wanted. It looked lovely on a girl.

Bambamber · 15/01/2019 15:53

YANBU

I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck if strangers couldn't tell whether my baby was a boy or a girl. It really doesn't matter, it's not an insult to get it wrong. Your baby certainly will not mind

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/01/2019 15:56

Your mum and your sister are odd. No one should think twice even for a nanosecond about whether a colour/pattern is "for" one sex or the other.

My DS is 2.5, has longish hair and I dress him in a variety of clothes of all colours and patterns. As a result he occasionally gets referred to as "she" or "the little girl". And, it doesn't matter in the slightest if it happens - it doesn't affect him or me.

Endofrelationship · 15/01/2019 15:59

At Christmas, my DS had nail varnish on (he saw me doing mine and wanted some, we were staying home and I saw no issue) my mum had a face on her when she saw it and told me to take it off. I think she has issues around gender.

Ooh I know the set you're talking about I think! It's beautiful, it's on my list for my little girl! (and not at all similar to the curtains in her ju gle themed nursery!)
I can dress my DD head to toe in pink and still get told what fabulous eyelashes my little boy has!

agnurse · 15/01/2019 16:08

YANBU. FWIW, when I was little, my crib had zoo animals on it. I turned out a very "girly girl".

rosydreams · 15/01/2019 16:12

you are totally right one thing i hated was how girly my other halfs family gifts were.Nothing remotely gender neutral like no lego for her birthdays or christmas.Even books were about princesses everything had to be pink

Dont get me wrong i love girly stuff and appreciate they care so much but theres so much more as a girl myself i played with toy dinosaurs as well as barbies.

Celebelly · 15/01/2019 16:13

We are due a girl in a few weeks and some of her clothes have been bought from the 'boys' section because I just liked them! Some superhero and dinosaur stuff, mainly, as apparently those are boy things (young me didn't get that memo). Zoo animals are entirely neutral. We have quite a few zoo animal pieces!

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/01/2019 16:13

They are fine but I would use babygros .

crikeycrumbsblimey · 15/01/2019 16:15

Your mum and sister want a doll to dress up.
I realised with DD that I didn’t mind “girly” but she isn’t a doll!

heartshapedknob · 15/01/2019 16:17

Of course YANBU. Some people have the idea that what colours children can wear is based on genitalia, which is obviously ridiculous. And anyway you’ve bought neutral coloured items.

Endofrelationship · 15/01/2019 16:24

@MyDcAreMarvel what do you have against babygrows? Plus these are night gowns, not baby grows.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 15/01/2019 16:25

Your mum is hilarious!

Endofrelationship · 15/01/2019 16:25

Sorry @MyDcAreMarvel what do you have against nightgowns?

OP posts:
MyDcAreMarvel · 15/01/2019 16:25

I said I would use babygros- rather than a nightgown they not as warm or comfortable.

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/01/2019 16:25
