Before I get accused of single handedly ruining the planet, I’m very conscious of environmental issues, went vegan, try to avoid single use plastics, no children etc.
Went for dinner last night with a friend who is quite militant about the environment. And their new huge thing is food waste.

There were 4 of us round, all adults with appetites. (I’d run 10k beforehand and had skipped my usual post run snack) when we got there he was cooking and I know I can be a glutton but it was literally fuck all Blush
I think everyone got about 2 tablespoons of rice and a similar amount of curry. He wanted there to be no possibility that there would be any left and therefore thrown away.
It was delicious but literally took up a fifth of a plate. One of the other ladies there jokingly said “is there a war on, what’s with the rations” to which he got very offended and went off on one a bit about consumption and waste etc.
AIBU to think this is a bit weird/ott
(Waits for mumsnet to come on and say everything more than a teaspoon of rice is gluttony)

Leftovers are often better than the meal itself misses the point

user1467718508 · 15/01/2019 09:46

He was using it as an opportunity to virtue signal.

I'd not be accepting another dinner invite from him.

bobstersmum · 15/01/2019 09:47

According to you op I'm ruining the planet (3 dc) but I agree that your friend did not give you enough food, I would faint if I only ate that much!

UnderHerEye · 15/01/2019 09:47

sarahjconner

going full Baldrick made me proper laugh !

Chris Packham has ASD, one feature of which can be obsessive behaviour, which could explain the fanaticism about veganism-if it’s his latest ‘thing’ it could well be taking over his life.

(Sorry for the random derail, we’ve just started really seeing this in my 8yr old so it’s been on my mind a bit at the moment)

DistanceCall · 15/01/2019 09:52

Ridiculous. Haven't they heard about leftovers?

PlumpSyrianHamster · 15/01/2019 10:10

Gawd, yet another one of my mates has become a boring vegan. So sick of hearing about her food.

Ask him why he doesn't eat leftovers then.

ShartGoblin · 15/01/2019 10:35

Agree with the majority, much better to make too much and have leftovers! I do this on purpose whenever I make a saucy dish.

EchoCardioGran · 15/01/2019 10:51

Return the invitation and serve an "eat all you can" turnip buffet of raw turnip. ( Use all leftovers)
Other guests should bring their own meals in brown paper bags due to their severe turnip allergy.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 15/01/2019 10:57

@Yinv why is it better just to ghost him than to say something? They’re supposed to be friends?

RiverTam · 15/01/2019 11:02

surely one of the good things about curry is that it's perfect for leftovers?

Having said that, 2 tablespoons of rice and curry each sounds just about alright to me, certainly doesn't sound minute.

DistanceCall · 15/01/2019 11:04

"2 tablespoons of rice and curry each sounds just about alright to me, certainly doesn't sound minute"

You're joking, right? Two tablespoons is not a meal. It's a snack.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/01/2019 11:07

Two heaped serving spoons maybe but not two tablespoons. That is a tiny amount.

Eliza9917 · 15/01/2019 11:11

Hmm That wouldn't fill a saucer.

Nothisispatrick · 15/01/2019 11:13

His point doesn’t even make any sense. I don’t think I would have been able to sit there and not question his logic, particularly if he’s a good friend. And why are pp talking about leftovers off other people’s plates? If you serve up a big dish and allow people to take seconds if needed there’s no need to scrape half eaten food off people’s plates for later.
Leftovers generally means the food still in the serving dish/pan.

RiverTam · 15/01/2019 11:15

2 tablespoons or rice and 2 tablespoons of curry? Yes, I'd say that's a portion.

a tablespoon is the same as a serving spoon, isn't it? And yes, I would also assume heaped because who shakes the food off a tablespoon to make it level when dishing up? This guy, could I suppose.

so, 2 heaped table/serving spoons of rice and 2 heaped table/serving spoons of curry. That's what I'd probably have, though if it was delicious it would be nice to have the option of seconds.

lastqueenofscotland · 15/01/2019 11:23

A table spoon isn’t a serving spoon it’s way smaller Confused

Urm no. Two tablespoons of curry and two of rice would barley take up a quarter of a normal dinner plate.

Santaclarita · 15/01/2019 11:32

I'd have left some just to piss him off. Grin

Kintan · 15/01/2019 11:33

RiverTam no that’s not true. A table spoon and a serving spoon are two entirely different things! A table spoon holds about 10ml of liquid, a serving spoon is much bigger.

RiverTam · 15/01/2019 11:33

Oh! Well, they're the same in my house and growing up.

What's a tablespoon then? I thought a cutlery service would be (spoon-wise) tea spoon, soup spoon, pudding spoon, serving/tablespoon. That's what my wedding one was, there wasn't a tablespoon and serving spoon as 2 different things.

lastqueenofscotland · 15/01/2019 11:35

A table spoon is a bit smaller than a desert spoon no?

OP posts:
ToastyFingers · 15/01/2019 11:36

A table spoon is the sort you'd eat cereal with, a serving spoon is much bigger.
I hate food waste, and we waste very little by freezing and eating leftovers. We don't go hungry though, that would be miserable.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/01/2019 11:38

I always thought:
Teaspoon 5 ml
Desert spoon 10 ml
Tablespoon 15 ml
