Before I get accused of single handedly ruining the planet, I’m very conscious of environmental issues, went vegan, try to avoid single use plastics, no children etc.
Went for dinner last night with a friend who is quite militant about the environment. And their new huge thing is food waste.

There were 4 of us round, all adults with appetites. (I’d run 10k beforehand and had skipped my usual post run snack) when we got there he was cooking and I know I can be a glutton but it was literally fuck all Blush
I think everyone got about 2 tablespoons of rice and a similar amount of curry. He wanted there to be no possibility that there would be any left and therefore thrown away.
It was delicious but literally took up a fifth of a plate. One of the other ladies there jokingly said “is there a war on, what’s with the rations” to which he got very offended and went off on one a bit about consumption and waste etc.
AIBU to think this is a bit weird/ott
(Waits for mumsnet to come on and say everything more than a teaspoon of rice is gluttony)

Oh god Sarah there is no words really

Tartyflette · 15/01/2019 09:03

sarahJ oh god, we know someone like this too, he can’t bear food waste and will go round eating leftovers from everyone else’s plate — cheese rinds, fat/gristle, anything.
His proudest boast was that he had some chicken which was a bit dodgy so he put it in the cat’s bowl but when the cat turned its nose up at it he retrieved it and ate it himself.
That genuinely made me heave.

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2019 09:05

You could have said it was ok you were going to stop at Macdnalds on the way home.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 15/01/2019 09:08

Have you been visiting my in-laws?
On second thoughts those portions sound bigger than what they serve, we have to sneak rations into our bedroom when we stay there

WildFlower2019 · 15/01/2019 09:12

It is rude because curry can be eaten several days after it's cooked and be frozen, so no waste necessary. In our house we will cook a curry of six portions for two of us. We'll eat two potions across two evenings and then freeze the third portion for a "ready meal" to have a week or two after! We meal plan so very little is wasted.

I wonder if your friend is very stressed and trying to control his life in other ways, this is one of those ways and he's become a little obsessed with it. Still daft though when he could have just eaten any leftovers!

Yinv · 15/01/2019 09:13

Should have cooked a decent quantity then put leftovers in the fridge for an instant lunch/dinner the next day. Ok to serve people a small portion initially as long as they can have more from the pot if still hungry. Very strange behaviour.

Yinv · 15/01/2019 09:15

But I also think the friend who joked about rationing was a bit out of line. Could have kept quite and just declined further invitations.

userschmoozer · 15/01/2019 09:17

For some people, their enthusiasm is more about control than a desire to save anyone or anything.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 15/01/2019 09:17
  1. rude and inhospitable
  2. rice is one of the worst culprits for carbon emissions/water consumption, he should be using local produce, which rice never is. you should point that out for him next time
  3. does he drive a car or fly? if so mahoosive hypocrite
Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 15/01/2019 09:18
  1. ^^ what user just said
MrsJayy · 15/01/2019 09:21

Chris Packham was on tv yesterday talking about enviromental impact of food he has gone vegan and only eats locally sourced but i switched off because he was just going on and on !

bagpiss · 15/01/2019 09:22

Although i agree with the rice/carbon comment above, i cannot understand any food waste related to curry and rice. In our house at the very unlikely issue of there being any left all 😃, it will still get eaten another day or frozen for a quick meal another time.

FrenchJunebug · 15/01/2019 09:23

it's rude. You can freeze leftovers.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/01/2019 09:23

Well that's not the way to avoid food waste.

If you invite people round for curry (or any sort of food that reheats well), you make loads, people eat well and enjoy their food, and hope that there's leftovers so you don't have to cook the next day.

And that's even more efficient than your mates miserable offering because it probably uses less fuel.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/01/2019 09:25

MrsJay Assuming that Chris Packham lives in the UK, how much vegan locally sourced food will be available over the next few months?

I hope he likes cabbages, because I don't see many chick peas, avocadoes and quinoa being grown around here.

"Blimey, has he never heard you can freeze leftovers?"

That's just what I was thinking.

Food waste-what's that??!!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/01/2019 09:34

Does he not eat leftovers?
He sounds a bit odd.
Are you all quite young?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/01/2019 09:35

He must be a bit thick (or else have some weird thing about leftovers) if he doesn't realise that remains can be frozen or eaten up next day.

I always tend to over- rather than under-cater but leftovers are hardly ever wasted in this house.

What really does irk me, though, is people who take more than they're going to eat, and leave it on their plate. Especially when it comes to hotel or restaurant buffets. Makes me really mad to see the wanton waste that goes on. If I were a dictator, wasters of food would be made to starve for a while - preferably in a rat-infested dungeon. 😈

cantfindname · 15/01/2019 09:40

I have no problem with people being eco-warriors, vegetarian, vegan or, indeed, of evangelical religions. My problem is when they foist their beliefs on other people, which is what this friend has done. He is entitled to live as he pleases but not to expect others to fit his ideas.
He was rude and a bit of a twat tbh.

appless · 15/01/2019 09:42

I'd imagine the UK is still producing a fair variety of fruit and veg over winter, including in huge commercial greenhouses.

Leek, potatoes, swede, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, onions, turnips, parsnips, etc.
