Poor dd2 drew the short straw and has the tiniest box room in the world. We’ve been here 5 years and I’m currently in the process of binning/donating pretty much all the stuff she had that she never plays with (12 bin bags and counting!).

She refuses to sleep in her high up bed anymore because she once saw a spider (she’s being assessed for ASD and gets a bed in her bonnet about stuff) , so at her request I’ve now bought her a day bed, which has drawers and a pull out trundle underneath. So the big bed is going which is going to create a storage nightmare.

She still has a fuck ton of stuff she claims she can’t part with which is in my room at the moment. Toys, organised into big storage boxes, books, games, the biggest hamster cage in the world, sparkly bags and all that shit. Currently her clothes are not in her room and I can’t see that changing. Where the feck am I going to put all this stuff?

I’ve included a pic so you can see my problem. Please don’t judge the mess (it’s a work in progress!) or the hideous pink walls (she chose them a few years ago and they’re going).

Please share any box room storage miracles that you have!

Although, according to my measurements and the ikea site, the Hemnes one may well fit. Assembled length is 209cm.

My children both keep their books directly behind their doors. It uses space I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to use. We have 5 of the ikea flisat’s behind my daughters door and we used the spice racks in my sons room. The flisat’s are much more expensive but much easier to put up and hold a lot more so a better product. I’ll see if I can take a photo in the morning

How about bed under the window and a system like Platsa from Ikea - you buy what you need for your particular room - cupboards, doors, shelves, baskets, etc.

Ignore me, 6’5” isn’t 2 metres is it Grin. My measuring tape foiled me until I’ve just pulled it out and realised the cm go on a fair bit further than the inches.

Horizontal murphy bed? They can have a foldable table underneath which you can use when the bed is "put away"

Islands81 · 15/01/2019 00:02

In terms of knocking walls about to access the bulk head, I don’t expect that’s possible as it’s a HA house.

We want to do this from Ikea Hackers for our box room www.ikeahackers.net/2016/09/hack-ivar-murphy-bed.html

Islands81 · 15/01/2019 00:10

Not sure the Murphy bed would work, I’d like her to have a comfy space she can use to chill out in, rather than living space IYSWIM.

I got a mattress made to order, 3 inches shorter than normal and made a bed frame to go across a box room. Made a world of difference. The left over space is suddenly square and not a corridor.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 15/01/2019 00:22

It will look so much bigger with a lower bed! And lighter. And as some have suggested a paler paint colour too, there's a lovely shade called Moon-something which is iridescent, it would look lovely and girly still but a little more grown up. Also, the desk - is it really used? Could she have a study nook somewhere else in the house instead? Also, I wouldn't go for a pull out bed underneath. Much better to use that for storage under the bed and get a roll up mattress for sleepovers.)
If she really has that many teddies, how about shelving about a foot or so below the ceiling height all around the room for those? You might have to help her hook them down but it's worth it for the space. Put up picture shelves like Ikea Mosslanda for her to display things in white frames (photos, artwork etc).

Take a look at some of the kitchen storage solutions. Usually slimmer and various sizes. Even those rails that hang utensils can hold a few hangers for uniforms.

Thesunrising · 15/01/2019 00:24

Elfa shelving is a terrifically flexible option for storage in tight places. You can get various depth shelves (with a bottom shelf deep enough to act as a desk), pull out drawers, craft style hanging boards and tons of modular storage boxes and hooks to mix and match. Bonus is that you can hang it all off one rail that you screw in across the top of the wall and all the down ‘bits’ and shelves just hang off the top rail. So no holes in the wall (other than for the top rail) and the option of being able to change the configuration as your child grows.

Inst as of a desk could she have one of those over the bed trays like they use in hospitals? Or a pull down on screwed to the wall

Hotterthanahotthing · 15/01/2019 00:24

I liked the daybed in your picture. If you got it with 2oftge thinner IKEA matresses pads then they can be split for sleepovers.
With that bed under the window you have loads of space.Kitchen type cabinets above her bed, kallax on the opposite wall, some as shelves some with boxes or baskets.
That still leaves a decent space in between.

Islands81 · 15/01/2019 00:29

I’ve just found this website which sells shorter length single beds (175cm mattresses). That could work, although she’s already nearly 140cm at 8 years so not sure how much longer she’d fit in it? Would be lovely if I could put the bed up that end though.

Selling the hemnes and the stompa bed she has now might nearly fund a shorter bed!

Islands81 · 15/01/2019 00:33

I could get a blind for the window if she did have a bed that end which would look better I think and I could lose the curtain rail 🤔

OP posts:
Islands81 · 15/01/2019 00:34

Oh and no the desk has never been used as a desk, mostly because it has a bloody enormous hamster cage on it.

You can get desks that fold away into the wall, and folding chairs too.

Moving storage up and beds lower will make an enormous difference. People think our guest bedroom is bigger than our master. They're actually the same size, but the master has a king-size high Victorian bed, and the guest has a low double.

I would:

Get as low a bed as possible whilst still having under bed storage.
Foldaway desk on opposite wall.
Slim and shallow wardrobe in space at end of bed.
Hammock for soft toys.

MaverickSnoopy · 15/01/2019 08:28

Growing up my bedroom was 6ft by 6ft 5". I had a bed that went under the window. I had lots of wall storage and a floor to ceiling wardrobe. I also had space under the bed and a shelf/mirror combo for dressing table as I got older. I loved my room. When I got older my parents paid a carpenter to build a bed that exactly fitted the space. I never outgrew the bed and lived there until I was 24.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 15/01/2019 08:46

We put a divan bed with full under bed storage (sliding door) under the window wall. Blind instead of curtains. Turned the door so it opened to the left instead of the right.
Fitted furniture on the left wall with overbed cupboards wardrobe with a lot of storage above the rails and a connected chest of drawers on the bit of wall to the right of the door opening.
Desk and fold up chair on the right hand wall with shelves above.
