To consider getting myself a single bed?

My room isn't tiny, it's a small double sized bedroom but seeing as I don't have a partner at present with no aspirations to change that in the foreseeable future, should I bin off the creaky old double and get a nice single? Would make my personal space so much nicer if I had the room to move about in there. (I have 3 sons and sometimes my very own space is so appealing!)

I love mine. I feel like I'm drowning if I sleep on a double alone. You can always fit two people in a single, or get one that converts into a double.

SushiMonster · 14/01/2019 21:01

Get a single if you like, plenty big enough for one person.

Eifla · 14/01/2019 21:03

If you want a single, then go for it.

Personally, they feel like sleeping on an ironing board to me!

8FencingWire · 14/01/2019 21:04

How about a queen size one?
DD used to have a single and sometimes I’d sleep in it while she was in the cot. It is quite narrow.
When I separated from stbxh I bought a double, as opposed to the king size I used to have whilst still with him. No idea why, perhaps I thought DD might like to sleep with me sometimes ?
Queen size might be a good compromise.

I'd get a daybed style single where there is another mattress to pull out to make it suitable for two people if needed.

I absolutely love sleeping in a single bed. It makes me feel cosy, independent. Reminds me of student days when I was so young and free. Do it.

pisspawpatrol · 14/01/2019 21:19

I'd get a small double (4ft) rather than a single, but i'm a starfisher. Definitely make the most your space though and if you don't feel you'd need a proper double then why not? I often dream of having a room and bed to myself again.

RosemarysBabyDress · 14/01/2019 21:20

Can you swap bed with one of your sons for a couple of nights and try a single? I feel like I am falling off the bed in a single, I hate it when I end up in one of my kids' small bed. If you sleep well and have a comfy nights for 2-3 days, go for it.

StartingGrid · 14/01/2019 21:21

I sleep in a single, the cat and I find it lovely and cosy and far more restful than sharing the king sized with my insomniac fidget DP

SuziQ10 · 14/01/2019 21:22

Is there a bed size in between single and double? That might be nice

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/01/2019 21:24

I've got a superking to myself but if you fit in a single then go for it

RippleEffects · 14/01/2019 21:33

DH and I changed to 2 x 2ft6 singles pushed together with 2 single duvets. Hes a fitful sleeper and 2 of our three DC have additional needs and are up in the night. The youngest ever couple of hours at present.

Best move we ever made. The bed feels so much bigger even though in theory we've each only got a 2ft 6 small single. It's easier to change, and iron the sheets too.

I'm with the poster upthread though, who suggested considering one of those singles with the pull out single underneath with legs so you can create a king size as a guest bed If you think you may ever need it.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 14/01/2019 21:41

I also think a 4' so called 'small double' is the way to go. Still use a flat sheet on the bottom and a double duvet.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/01/2019 21:43

Single bed with a trickle bed underneath?

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/01/2019 21:43

Truckle!!!

I, up until recently, was single for a year... but I still love my super kingsize deep, comfy bed. Even two cats can't seem to hog it.

blackteasplease · 14/01/2019 21:45

A "small double " / 3/4 sized sounds good to me. More comfortable than a single.

If you do get a single, use a double duvet on it. Much nicer and you don't keep losing the duvet!

TulipsInbloom1 · 14/01/2019 21:46

I'd do the opposite. Re-home the clothes and make up etc and fill the entire room with a bed. Custom made. Wall to wall. Zillions of pillows and a duvet the size of Scotland. Bliss.

AverageAvenger · 14/01/2019 21:48

I’ve got a small double, which is in between single and double size. It means I get a bit more bed space but also my quite small bedroom doesn’t feel as crowded. Win win for me.

Chouetted · 14/01/2019 21:55

Ditto the double duvet recommendation.

OR, I have a single duvet (much easier to handle) and then a double bedspread on top, which works amazingly.

CharlyAngelic · 14/01/2019 21:57

I love the idea of a single bed .
I am married.
A single bed , different room ...house even !

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/01/2019 21:57

They're called a King Single in Oz. Might be something similar in the UK?

RagingWhoreBag · 14/01/2019 22:02

I have a small double (4ft, so between single and double) - well I actually have two of them side by side, as my DP is a terrible sleeper and he keeps me awake with his tossing and turning, blanket stealing antics if we share! At 4ft wide its more than big enough for us both to get snuggled up in, but then when its sleeping time we go our separate ways.

A single bed to yourself is the same space you'd have in a king size if you shared it equally (which I suspect most of us do not! Angry ) so no reason not to if you're planning on staying single, but I'd maybe go small double for that extra foot of starfishing!

IrenetheQuaint · 14/01/2019 22:04

I'm single and have a small double, which is perfect for me. Sleeping in a single bed makes me feel like a student.

kaytee87 · 14/01/2019 22:06

I'd hate to sleep in a single bed personally.
