Sorry I do know it’s been on before - but am finding this show worrying - I am a “drinker” and have considered cutting down but never seem to get around to it. Anyone else?

Hoopaloop · 13/01/2019 22:18

If you drink as much as him, stop.

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:19

I don’t drink quite as much as him - but reckon I get through a good few bottles of wine a week

EustaciaPieface · 13/01/2019 22:19

Yes, currently doing dry january but I know I’ll be back to drinking too much next month. I haven’t watched the show, I should do.

SouthernComforts · 13/01/2019 22:23

I think he's right about the generational thing. Certainly lines up with my experience working in pubs. I'd say 25-40 yr olds now drink differently but not better. More dry days then big binges.

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:24

I don’t know - I think it’s crept up on me. I don’t drink every day by any means - but I can drink a bottle of wine and be pretty sober

A lot of people are in your situation. If you need inspiration find some blogs on line or read the quit lit that’s everywhere. Soberfish and Mummy was a secret Drinking / sober diaries are a good start. Also Mrs D is going without . Jason Vale talks a lot of sense in his book too. Oh, and the Naked Mind by Annie ( someone, sorry I have forgotten).... the problem with the Adrian Child’s program was he seems to be getting away with his drinking so may not be inspiring enough to help you cut down or stop.

Longdistance · 13/01/2019 22:32

I could quite easily drink a bottle of wine + a night. I’m doing dry January, and giving my head a wobble.
I know I can do it as I’ve done it several times before, though got back on the band wagon as my birthday is at the end of the month.
What’s really working is I am watching what I’m eating too, and the weight is dropping off especially around my middle, I can feel it.
Only thing is, I love the taste of wine, it’s not the feeling I get from it, but the taste. I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Kneesbend · 13/01/2019 22:33

I witnessed Adrian speak publicly today at the ClubSoda Mindful Drinking Festival and what he said was so raw.

Genuine guy, very factual and remorseful.

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:34

@longdisance I’m the same - love the taste of wine! I have a cupboard full of spirits and would never have the urge to drink them - but will go out of my way to buy extra wine

OP posts:
ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:35

@kneesbend - the mindful drinking festival??? What was that like?

Waddsup12 · 13/01/2019 22:35

He did change after the documentary...

Guardian article

Drum2018 · 13/01/2019 22:39

This Naked Mind by Annie Grace
the Sober Diaries by Claire Pooley

Try them to start. I stopped some time ago - was hard but now I'd never consider having a drink. I wasn't drinking as much as you but what I was drinking was enough to make me question the damage it was causing me both physically and mentally. Moderation didn't work for me. It was all or nothing.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 13/01/2019 22:41

I remember watching this first time round and being disappointed with his attitude at the end. Will read the Guardian article above - will be interesting to see if he has changed.

Kneesbend · 13/01/2019 22:42

mindfuldrinkingfestival.com

Stalls set up inside a London building in Brick Lane promoting by offering free samples on-site alcohol-free alternatives. Beers, lagers, gins, Campari, wine and so on. Cameras were there, AC (amongst others) did a speech.

I came away with BeesKnees and Outfox bottles.

It's easily done. I've pretty much lived alone with dd for the last 7 years and in the beginning it was so easy to pour a glass once she was in bed. I noticed the habit and had to nip it in the bud, I have an addictive personality. So now I don't drink on a 'school night'. I do binge drink maybe once a month though, usually a dinner party, get together with friends etc. Not rolling out of clubs but the effect is the same!!

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:47

It’s an odd thing - as a teenager (a long long time ago) I took recreational drugs and was never ever addicted (or tempted to be). I’m a fairly confident person so it’s not about drinking for Dutch courage or to make a night out better (in fact I tend not to drink I’d say I go to a party). It’s indoors that I drink a lot

Sorry am possibly just blurting my thoughts down

OP posts:
AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 13/01/2019 22:55

Me. But it’s a stress thing. No excuse, I know.

pineapplepenthouse · 13/01/2019 22:55

I hear you OP. I know for a fact I drink too much. I just don’t seem to have a ‘stop button’. I can go days and days without drinking but when I do have a drink I can’t seem to ‘have a few’ like everyone else.
For example: go to the neighbours for a couple of wines with DH on a Friday evening, leave feeling sober enough and DH will make himself a coffee but I will pour myself another. I always wonder the next day why I need to do that and he’s quite happy to stop.
Sorry, didn’t mean to jump on your thread. I’ve never said/written that out loud Blush

Canibuildasnowman · 13/01/2019 22:57

I’m not sure why everyone in this doc doesn’t just scream at him ‘stop drinking!’ . Triple figure units every week, the man need to attempt a dry month or 100 days or something just to Fr some perspective. And frank skinner - an alcoholic who stopped 30 years ago - telling him he’s not that bad and don’t stop cos it’s boring... WTF????

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:58

@pinapplehouse - yes I’m
Exactly the same! I don’t have an off button. I’m cool not to “start” but once I start I tend not to stop

OP posts:
Canibuildasnowman · 13/01/2019 22:59

I feel for him, he must have felt like crap most of the time!

ddodprob · 13/01/2019 22:59

@Canibuildasnowman tbf frank skinner comes across as an arse I think

thenightsky · 13/01/2019 23:02

is it on iplayer? Ive not seen it before, but I'm currently doing dry Jan so would like to see it. Anything to spur me on.

Me too. I'd rather not drink at all than have one or two.
