to ask for reassurance about calpol.

I realised that I gave DD (nearly 2 years) a double dose of calpol last night.

I gave her 5ml of the 6+ rather than 5ml of the infant calpol. So 250mg rather than 150mg.

She's awake and alert.

I just need someone to tell me it's ok, she'll be fine and I don't want to waste a 111 operators time on that.

It's fine, isn't it?

What are the bottle so similar! It was dark and I didn't have my glasses on.

You need to go to A&E now - paracetamol toxicity will not be immediately obvious. I don’t want to scare you, and it isn’t a large overdose but she will likely need bloods to check her levels (I’m an ex paeds nurse)

Swimmingsnowman · 13/01/2019 08:04

It’s fine if it’s just one dose. You can give 20mg/kg as a loading dose so working on an estimated weight of 12kg that’s 240mg. Don’t worry!

Tiredeyes21 · 13/01/2019 08:04

NHS advice

beta.nhs.uk/medicines/paracetamol-for-children/

Don’t give her anymore for 24hrs.... advice is also to ring 111

SaturdaySauv · 13/01/2019 08:04

Did you give her any other doses of calpol over the last 24 hours?
Does she take any other regular medication? Did you give her any other ‘when required’ medication?
Does she have any liver function or renal issues?

the99 · 13/01/2019 08:04

She only had that one dose.

She hasn't had anything else. Do you really think?

I'll phone 111... I don't want to waste their time though.

moredoll · 13/01/2019 08:05

^I think that's an overreaction.
Phone 111 first and see what they say.

Tiredeyes21 · 13/01/2019 08:05

Also how much has she had leading up to it?

TeddyIsaHe · 13/01/2019 08:05

I’d always phone 111 in this instance, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

the99 · 13/01/2019 08:05

No other medication at all.

No renal or liver function problems.

OP posts:
the99 · 13/01/2019 08:06

She weighs 11kg so 220mg.... she's had 250mg.

OP posts:
DitzyPrints · 13/01/2019 08:07

I’d ring 111

IDontCareRightNow · 13/01/2019 08:08

I have given my daughter 5ml when was only suppose to give 2.5ml
As she was a healthy weight and no health problems was advised she would be ok but not to give anymore for another 24hours that's all
Just keep and eye on sure they will be fine - if your worries phone 111 that's what they are there for x

AgentJohnson · 13/01/2019 08:08

Really!!! It was dark and you didn’t have your glasses on. Contacting 111 is the bare minimum of what you should have done.

seven201 · 13/01/2019 08:09

Call 111, you're not wasting their time

SaturdaySauv · 13/01/2019 08:10

Based on what you’ve said and if she’s an average weight for her age I would make sure she stays well hydrated today to support metabolism and not give any further medication. Totally has to feel like the right thing for you though so take her to the walk in or call 111 if you’re conceded.

user1471530109 · 13/01/2019 08:10

I did the same thing this week. I'm sure the boxes never used to be so similar Angry

Difference is, my dd is 5.5. But only 14kg. I decided to leave it. But was a bit anxious for next few hours.
She is fine btw. But like I said, much older.

witherwings · 13/01/2019 08:11

I would ring 111 just to be safe.
As a PP has done similar and I expect lots of others have done the same. Try not to worry.

the99 · 13/01/2019 08:28

Called 111. She's well below the toxic dose and nothing to worry about. It was only that one dose, despite it being a double dose, so she'll be fine.

The bottles are almost identical!!!

user1466690252 · 13/01/2019 08:31

I understand what you mean about the bottles being almost identical don’t beat yourself up. Glad she is Ok

elliesm98 · 13/01/2019 08:33

Just for future reference for anyone reading this, it’s fine unless you take more than the daily amount

Pommes · 13/01/2019 08:36

I agree with you OP. The boxes are similar.
We also have 6+ and normal stuff. So, after reading this, I am going to go and stick a name label on the bottles, which makes it easier for us to quickly identify which bottle is for which child.

WanderingAimlessly · 13/01/2019 08:38

The bottles are stupidly similar. I have taken to putting a sticker on each with the kids name and allowed dose. I do this as soon as the bottle comes into the house. This is because I fear doing exactly this in the middle of the night!

dottycat123 · 13/01/2019 08:42

Personally I wouldn't be overly concerned. If she has had double dose and is a reasonable size her liver will cope. I would be astonished if A&E would do levels with this amount but any level taken more than 4 hours after the dose was taken won't be correct. If there is uncertainty about amount taken or time taken in theory she could be admitted for the antidote which will involve a drip for at least 24 hrs. In over 30 years as a nurse I have never known anyone require treatment for a double dose. Having said that only you can decide what you want to do and you must do what you feel is best.

the99 · 13/01/2019 08:43

We don't normally have the 6+ in the house. I got it a couple of months back when my nephew came to stay.

I knew it was in the cupboard but I just didn't check thoroughly last night!!

It's just another thing to add to the mum-guilt!

OP posts:
the99 · 13/01/2019 08:46

I'm going to stick a massive label on the 6+ with nephew's name on.
