to ask for reassurance about calpol.

I realised that I gave DD (nearly 2 years) a double dose of calpol last night.

I gave her 5ml of the 6+ rather than 5ml of the infant calpol. So 250mg rather than 150mg.

She's awake and alert.

I just need someone to tell me it's ok, she'll be fine and I don't want to waste a 111 operators time on that.

It's fine, isn't it?

What are the bottle so similar! It was dark and I didn't have my glasses on.

Ring 111. They will probably want to know her weight.

IShitGlitter · 13/01/2019 08:48

I did this with my DS when he was 1 I rung 111 and they said its quite common the packages are so similar its stupid really!

the99 · 13/01/2019 08:55

I did call 111 : She's well below the toxic dose and nothing to worry about. It was only that one dose, despite it being a double dose, so she'll be fine.

Poor thing won't be getting anymore calpol today no matter how crappy this cold makes her feel!

Kittykat93 · 13/01/2019 08:58

Read the thread people, op has already rang 111.

Whoever suggested going immediately to a&e was way over the top!

It was a mistake op, easily done. Glad you've got it sorted.

3luckystars · 13/01/2019 09:01

The bottles are alike but one is pink and one is white. They taste totally different too.

I am glad she is ok.

the99 · 13/01/2019 09:03

DD didn't comment on the taste.

There’s a whole formula for working is out and you need to know their weight. To be honest they can have waaaay more than you think. My DS was v sick in hospital at 9months and they gave him way more paracetamol than I would at home.

Aquilla · 13/01/2019 09:08

I wouldn't think twice about it, OP.

IDrinkFromTheKegOfGlory · 13/01/2019 09:10

If she's still feeling rubbish can you give her calprofen? Or did 111 say no more medicine at all?

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 13/01/2019 09:14

Don't go to a and e over it. Generally an extra dose is harmless and Calpol is especially cautious on the dosing. If you work it out by weight rather than age usually they are allowed more

3luckystars · 13/01/2019 09:15

Dont you take a drop yourself though before you five it to the child? I do. (Maybe that is not normal either though)

My daughter is the same age and the paramedics gave her way more than I would give her at home too.

the99 · 13/01/2019 09:15

They said she's fine to have whatever we'd normally give her. She'd still be nowhere near the toxic level. I'm just riddled with paranoia and want to give her system some time to rest & recover!

I'll slather snuffle baby on her and fire up the calpol plug in.

OP posts:
the99 · 13/01/2019 09:16

No, it all tastes vile. I once licked the syringe after giving DS some ibuprofen and it made my eyes twitch!

OP posts:
3luckystars · 13/01/2019 09:16

I take a drop before GIVING it to the child.

Sorry about that.

See we all make mistakes, dont be too hard on yourself!

Wormymary · 13/01/2019 09:17

i agree about the boxes, so many will have done this by mistake.

3luckystars · 13/01/2019 09:18

I like the pink full sugar calpol, but the rest are disgusting I agree.

Readytogogogo · 13/01/2019 09:19

Very easily done, we all make mistakes.

AgentJohnson...that was an unnecessary response.

the99 · 13/01/2019 09:20

@Readytogogogo there's always one Hmm

OP posts:
PlayingForKittens · 13/01/2019 09:22

It is easily done and thankfully no harm done.
It is a good idea to be in the habit of always checking the dose before you give. That way you would realise. It is second nature to me as I'm in healthcare so I do like I do at work but it is a good approach for anyone. Right person, right medication, right dose.

Quartz2208 · 13/01/2019 09:44

The levels of paracetamol in calpol are kept low to avoid accidental overdose for this very reason

When DS had a febrile convulsion on holiday in Austria the doctor can him a big dose of ibuprofen to bring it down - the amounts the medical profession know they can have and we should give are different

You can see why though the amount of times the 6+ is wrongly given or parent accidentally double dose there needs to be some wiggle room. Its enough so that it should work against most fevers. Those that dont come down with calpol should be seen by a medical profession who are then in charge of dosages

Op remember she can have ibuprofen based medicine to help

NoParticularPattern · 13/01/2019 09:50

Paracetamol toxicity is only likely to become a problem if you or your child has taken the full recommended daily amount and THEN you give extra. One double dose in isolation is absolutely not going to cause a problem- as you found out! It’s no wonder A+E is always heaving and the wait is days and days when people react like the first reply did!
