Hate my new 4K TV

Pinkyblinder · 12/01/2019 00:48

Last time I bought a TV was about 10 years ago. 26 inch Panasonic and it has fared well. Thought I'd better get on board with the new technology and have got a new 49 inch LG 4K LED TV.

After getting it a week ago I've just unboxed it and set it up.

But despite it being a Which recommended TV I am not that impressed with it. It is humongous for the room and despite spending hours adjusting the settings the picture doesn't seem much better than my Panasonic. Wish I could send it back.

Maybe it's me and I'm not smart enough to appreciate my smart TV. Also I'm paranoid about all the information it will collect about me!

I know that in the grand scheme of things this is trivial, but does anybody else feel sucked into getting the latest technology only to be quite disappointed?

Did anyone else think the telly COST 4k? Thought this was a mega stealth boast!!

Me Blush it is the middle of the night though.

longwayoff · 12/01/2019 06:55

4k? 1k phone? Whats happening out there?

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/01/2019 07:28

I have a small, old tv. It's 37" which according to the formula is too small for the room, it's not smart, it's not hd, it's not even 1080 let alone a 4K one.

I bought a fire stick to turn it into a smart tv so I can watch Netflix easily.

Does the job and can't see me changing it until it breaks.

I do think technology is awful for trying to convince people they need the latest model of whatever.

dimsum123 · 12/01/2019 07:38

I know now that 4k wrt a TV doesn't mean it costs £4000, but I only discovered that very recently (and apparently we've got a 4k smart HD TV at home - don't know how to switch it on tbh).

When DH bought our 4k TV I hated it and went to a 2nd hand shop and bought a "stupid" but simple to use TV for £50 and I just watch that now.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/01/2019 07:52

Did anyone else think the telly COST 4k? Thought this was a mega stealth boast!!

Not all that long ago, when it first came out, it probably would have!

Mercurial123 · 12/01/2019 08:27

The formula is viewing distance in inches divided by three. Example if you are sitting 10' from the TV times by 12 = 120" ➗ 3 = 40" is the screen size which must be measured diagonally.

ClaryFray · 12/01/2019 08:35

Ah there are people in the world unable to feed their families and then there are people complaining about their 4k TV.

What a time to be alive...

HarryTheSteppenwolf · 12/01/2019 08:36

If I was sitting 10' from my television I'd be on the drive.

Mercurial123 · 12/01/2019 08:43

Harry well change the formula and you can sit inside....

Vitalogy · 12/01/2019 08:49

Am I alone in not wanting to be immersed in my TV? I just want to watch it, not be inside it Grin I know, what about these curved ones, even worse!

I agree about sending it back OP. Get a smaller one. I've got an LG but think a Samsung one would have been better. This LG one is unable to have ITV Player and some others I can't remember atm.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2019 08:51

Grin at people thinking it's a 4 grand telly and OP is boasting.

daisychain01 · 12/01/2019 09:09

I didn't think the OP was doing a stealth boast, but I have to admit I did think it was a thread about paying 4 grand for a telly Grin

Caveat: I am a complete luddite about tellies! Haven't had one for years and never missed it, but that a whole other thread!

BovrilOverkillOhMyInsides · 12/01/2019 09:14

Apparently unlike the advice given years ago, nowadays you have to sit a lot closer to TV's to get the 'immersive' experience.

Back in the day, it was the 'tube' thing in the back of the telly which did is damage I think. And these days tvs don't have them.

I play my Xbox on quite a small flat screen, and have needed to say close to it to see properly. This has led to me feeling uncomfortably immersed in the TV. I've just started playing Call of Duty WW2 and I'm really enjoying it (makes a change from my Lego and Plants vs Zombies) but I don't get the odd bit of vertigo from being practically inside the action.

Did anyone else think the telly COST 4k? Thought this was a mega stealth boast!!

Yep me too. Didn't know there was such a thing as a 4K telly. Hmm

Whatabloodymessthisis · 12/01/2019 10:09

It will soon blend it more. Years ago when flat screens first came out we got a 42inch and it seemed absolutely ridiculous in the room. A few weeks later it was fine.

My mum and dads 72inch one still seems insane though!

reallybadidea · 12/01/2019 10:14

Ah there are people in the world unable to feed their families and then there are people complaining about their 4k TV.

Comments like this are the new Godwin's Law.

Santaclarita · 12/01/2019 10:16

People thought 4k was the price? You all need to update yourselves on technology. Grin

If you don't like it op, take it back. You're within your rights to.

MarmiteTermite · 12/01/2019 10:18

I too thought it cost £4K Blush.

My personal formula for tv size is that it needs to be smaller than the fire place as I want that to be the focus not the tv.

thegreylady · 12/01/2019 10:24

I though it had cost £4000 (ours was £399) . Ours is too small (32”) but dh thinks it’s too big. Fire stick is great and I just discovered Alexa can find programmes on it! We are currently loving The Bridge.

potatoscone · 12/01/2019 10:31

Never bought something and been unhappy with it? So it's a TV, so what? Don't quite get your logic here.

mobyduck · 12/01/2019 10:38

We have recently bought a 49 inch 4k TV.
Superb picture , would never go back!
Of course, they only show 4k if the broadcast is 4k! More and more films and programmes are 4k now, but old stuff is HD or less.

mobyduck · 12/01/2019 10:39

Also, if you have a smart TV you can use a firestick to turn it into a PC (using Amazon Silk, for free).Google away!

ThePants999 · 12/01/2019 11:05

@reallybadidea perfectly put Grin

daisychain01 · 12/01/2019 12:48

It's either the New Godwins Law or a "First World Problem" Grin

If you don't like it op, take it back. You're within your rights to

Nope I disagree (read upthread) the OP is not 'within their rights'. They can try to argue a good case and hope the store is willing to be flexible and aren't clued in on Consumer Rights 2015 in law, the TV is working, it is doing its job, so it's too close to call as to whether it is or isn't working as intended. Just style it out, OP!

Some cutting edge technology gets out into the marketplace before the RW infrastructure is ready for it. Like the Dot.com bubble era, where web developers designed sophisticated websites for online trading that took too long to load that people gave up, because their computer processing speeds and phone lines (yes before broadband, those quirky old analogue things!) didn't have the bandwidth to cope.

NoLeslie · 12/01/2019 12:54

Unfortunately the tech industry is dominated by men. The industry doesn't consider the requirements of half the population. So we end up with ludicrous TV sets that we don't want to be immersed in.

I agree, take it back for a refund.
