Green potatoes are poisonous?

Dweeble · 11/01/2019 18:22

It’s a myth yes?

Only I cooked stir fry but my tofu was frozen and then I threw in some leftovers and it was disgusting so I threw it in the bin in a rage. So I’m cooking some linda sausages and the only potato I have is a bit green.

Shall I just order a kebab and be done with it all?

Not a myth it the green colouring is chlorophyll which isn’t harmful but being green indicates the presence of solanine which could give you the squits

pixilatedpenguin · 11/01/2019 18:25

So go for the kebab 😂

MongerTruffle · 11/01/2019 18:26

It's not a myth, but it's not enough to make you ill.

UterusUterusGhali · 11/01/2019 18:26

Linda sausage stew? Beans instead of spuds?

SoupDragon · 11/01/2019 18:27

It is true but I've never been ill from eating slightly green potatoes. It depends how green and how much you eat I guess.

moredoll · 11/01/2019 18:27

Nope not a myth. They're toxic. You can cut the green bits away but if they're sprouting you need to chuck them.

iamyourequal · 11/01/2019 18:29

It’s not a myth at all. It’s Friday though, so why not treat yourself to a takeaway!

Clawdy · 11/01/2019 18:29

What's linda sausages?

John4703 · 11/01/2019 18:29

I want to know the answer. I will happily eat green potatos but my DW tells me that they are bad. I've eaten lots of them and as I am typing this I assume I am not dead.

Dweeble · 11/01/2019 18:35

Oh bollocks really? It’s only tinged green. Not fluorescent.

Linda McCartney sausages. The red onion ones. One of the few GF AND vegan easy freezer things in existence.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 11/01/2019 18:45

I would eat it.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2019 18:46

I've eaten slightly sprouting ones too.

Ta1kinPeace · 11/01/2019 18:47

Green - not a myth. Definitely not good for you

Sprouting - not an issue

Dweeble · 11/01/2019 18:48

Oh it was sprouting too. I really need to do some shopping.

OP posts:
Dweeble · 11/01/2019 18:51

It tasted ok. I’ll report back if I die.

You won't die
but stay near your toilet in a couple of hours

Bubbinsmakesthree · 11/01/2019 18:57

I have eaten sprouting potatoes many many times to no apparent ill effect, as well as those tinged a bit green.

Chouetted · 11/01/2019 18:57

It's not a myth, but you need to eat quite a few for it to have much effect.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 11/01/2019 18:59

Dear God, my potatoes start sprouting before they reach their use by dates (yes, even in a dark cupboard). There's no way I'm throwing them all away.

MissWilmottsGhost · 11/01/2019 19:01

Not a myth.

Not surprising when you know Potatoes (and tomatoes) are part of the Solanum family which includes deadly nightshade and henbane.

Nom nom Grin

MissWilmottsGhost · 11/01/2019 19:03

Knowing that^ has never stopped me eating slightly green and sprouting spuds BTW.

sweetkitty · 11/01/2019 19:03

Not a myth green potatoes contain glycoalkoloids which are toxic.

MissWilmottsGhost · 11/01/2019 19:06

Sorry family is Solanaceae before the botany pedants jump on me.

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsOn · 11/01/2019 19:19

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland, who sound like a reliable source, suggest that peeling them with extreme prejudice should help.

Blimey, I had no idea. Not only have I been happily eating green sprouting potatoes, I've been feeding them to my family for years too Blush No one has been ill because of it afaik.
