Green potatoes are poisonous?

Dweeble · 11/01/2019 18:22

It’s a myth yes?

Only I cooked stir fry but my tofu was frozen and then I threw in some leftovers and it was disgusting so I threw it in the bin in a rage. So I’m cooking some linda sausages and the only potato I have is a bit green.

Shall I just order a kebab and be done with it all?

I just put a jacket potato in. Potato bought today. It had one little tiny green patch that I cut off.. will it be okay??

I am terrified of getting sick and have only just got over a stomach bug.

tinofbeans · 11/01/2019 19:24

On a side note, we've found keeping potatoes in a brown paper bag rather than in a cupboard makes them last a lot longer before sprouting/turning green Grin

Nacreous · 11/01/2019 19:27

As long as you cut the green off it should be fine.

Bittermints · 11/01/2019 19:30

I just remove the sprouts and cut off the green bits and a bit beyond. Never been ill from potatoes.

MepsiPax · 11/01/2019 19:38

The green colour is caused by a substance called solanine, which is classed as a toxin. If the green is only under the skin, peeling them is OK apparently, but if it has spread throughout the whole potato,it shouldn't be eaten. If this substance is eaten, it may cause sickness, diarrhoea, headaches and stomach pain.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 11/01/2019 19:50

I googled this the other day. I really wanted a jacket potato but the only decent sized one we had was a bit green around the edges. The consensus seemed to be that too much green potato could make you ill, but a small amount is unlikely to cause a problem. I ate the potato and it was delicious. No ill effects.

RedForShort · 11/01/2019 19:52

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsOn: "The Food Safety Authority of Ireland, who sound like a reliable source, suggest that peeling them with extreme prejudice should help.
www.fsai.ie/faq/green_potatoes.html"
How do you peel with prejudice? Sounds wrong. We need George back, bet he could have told us how to peel without prejudice.

OP, think you'll be say. You need a reasonable amount of green potato to get ill from it.

chillpizza · 11/01/2019 20:03

At least you didn’t do what a friend did. Thought the plant growing from the potatoes was tomatoes. They nearly ate nightshade. That’s slightly riskier than a tinged green spud. Just cut out the green bit.

snoutandab0ut · 11/01/2019 20:05

Ive eaten a green potato. I’m still here and I wasn’t ill. I expect you’ll be fine

Slipperboots · 11/01/2019 20:08

I know someone who was hospitalised -
I think the potato was quite green though

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 11/01/2019 20:13

If they're only slightly green, I've always cut the green bits off. If it's very green I chuck them.

I've always cut sprouts off potatoes and eat them with no problems.

runoutofnamechanges · 11/01/2019 20:14

Technically, you could die... So you have the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a takeaway guilt free Grin

NoParticularPattern · 11/01/2019 20:16

They are toxic but you would need to eat a large fully green potato before you’d likely see any side effects. I’m talking the thing would need to look like the hulk’s starchy cousin. I use slightly green ones most days!

NoParticularPattern · 11/01/2019 20:18

Just to add that I’m still alive despite green potatoes. Not sure they’ve got WiFi in the afterlife yet!

ScarlettDarling · 11/01/2019 20:19

Sprouting potatoes are bad for you??? Who knew??!! I've always just gouged out the sprouting bits and never even thought they could be dodgy!

When I was pregnant my MIL told me to avoid green potatoes. I always just assigned it was one of her old wives tales but sounds like there's science behind it. I never have avoided them btw although I might do now I know they can cause tummy issues.

bridgetreilly · 11/01/2019 20:23

If it's only a bit, cut off the green and you'll be fine.

Dweeble · 11/01/2019 20:25

I’m still alive so far.

Sometimes you get an odd crisp tinged with green.

MongerTruffle · 11/01/2019 20:46

The green colour is caused by a substance called solanine
The green colour is caused by chlorophyll, but it can indicate that solanine is present.

CardsforKittens · 11/01/2019 21:35

Another survivor of green potatoes here. But also an advocate of take away on a Friday. Enjoy your kebab!

MiniMum97 · 11/01/2019 23:35

I've eaten loads of sprouting potatoes. I just cut the sprouts off. I also cut any green bits off as if you eat these you will immediately keel over and die.
