Toddler sleep attire

Posting for traffic!

My 20-month old has lately started waking up quite frequently in the night and I'm wondering if it might be because he's cold? We bedshare, but he doesn't have any covers over him. He wears a short-sleeved vest and a footed babygro at the moment. Is this too little? I've been looking at sleep sacks (ones from Slumbersac where he could have his feet free). Does anyone have experience with sleep sacks? Do they make such a difference?

He should be getting plenty of warmth from you. Have you tried putting your hand on his chest to see if he feels cold?

RiverTam · 10/01/2019 15:34

at that age DD would have word those and been in a sleeping bag as well.

EwItsAHooman · 10/01/2019 15:37

If he's in the bed with you then it's doubtful that he'll be cold unless you've got all the windows open and no blankets.

Could he be having a growth spurt and waking up hungry?

Bear2014 · 10/01/2019 15:39

My 18 month old currently wears a vest, babygro and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. He's in his own cot but yes I think your DS might be a bit chilly.

Camomila · 10/01/2019 15:41

DS used to have a blanket too at that age - mothercare knitted ones with little holes in the weave rather than cellular ones.

My son slept in a cot with blankets in his own room and all through the summer he woke up early. As soon as we put him in a sleeping bag around September time he started sleeping through so I would definitely get more layers on him to see if that changes things. He wears a full set of pjs and a vest underneath and the bag is 2.5 tog. I’ve never used a slumbersack but tk maxx usually has good offers on gro bags if there’s one near you and you don’t want to shell out loads.

AcornLane · 10/01/2019 16:36

Co-sleep with one year old (his choice not mine!) did the same with older DS when he was that age. Put him in between us with us under the duvet and him on top. Both wore the sleep suits with free arms and legs and matching slipper things (from JoJo Maman) Vest and babygrow underneath. Kept them warm and safe

kaytee87 · 10/01/2019 17:08

2 yo wears long sleeved vest, pjs, 2.5tog sleeping bag and he also likes a thin blanket blanket on top too. Our house is around 16 degrees at night I think.
He's probably cold with no blankets, try a sleeping bag or at that age just have him under the blankets with you.

AlmostAlwyn · 10/01/2019 20:02

I felt the back of his neck/top of his back last night and he did feel a bit cold, but not sure if it's better to be on the cooler side?

I think he would kick a blanket off so that's why I was thinking about the sleep sacks. What tog would be best?

We ended up with a selection of sleeping bags - 0.5, 1 and 2.5.

Incidentally, if your child is used to sleeping bags - get the 0.5 one in the winter while it's cheap! Don't be me, and wait for the heatwave to hit before realising that dearest DD refuses to sleep without a bag, even in the heat. There was a queue of sleep deprived parents at Mothercare the next morning Blush

Jackshouse · 10/01/2019 20:10

At that age we had a 4 tog duvet but DD was usually only in a nappy.

CottonSock · 10/01/2019 20:12

Mine is a bit older and has just started refusing sleeping bags. I'm putting socks and slippers on her, plus fleece onsie..now trying a radiator in her room. She won't keep blankets on either it's a pain.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/01/2019 20:12

DS (13mths) cosleeps - I sleep under the duvet with him on top. He wears - nappy, pyjamas and sleeping bag.

Itdoesgetbetterhonestly · 10/01/2019 20:12

Definitely cold I would say! Would you want to sleep in just your pjs in this temperature? Although you obviously don't want him to overheat if he feels cold that's also not good, so definitely get a sleeping bag for him.

birdiewoof · 10/01/2019 20:14

I co-sleep with my 23 month old, he wears a vest and then fleece pyjamas with slipper socks on. He kicks covers off x

Oysterbabe · 10/01/2019 20:17

I would say probably cold. My kids never kept covers on so I put them in www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sleep-snugglers-2-5-tog-b7186.html?gclid=CjwKCAiA99vhBRBnEiwAwpk-uLimtWXqrOPXJ_KlxqiuTXKdEhmXtk3za0Ld_tU2sAvpzHeQxYLUFxoC_CIQAvD_BwE

SuziQ10 · 10/01/2019 20:40

Should have a breathable blanket on top & long sleeve

kaytee87 · 10/01/2019 20:42

@AlmostAlwyn if his body feels cool to touch then he's cold. His body should feel the same as your body when you're comfortable.
Tog depends on temperature of house. Approx 3.5 tog for 15 degrees and cooler, 2.5 for 16-19 and 1.5 for warmer. Just going by what my toddler is comfortable in.
I really don't think you need to worry too much about a toddler overheating as much as you would a baby. If he was too hot he'd let you know.

MammaSchwifty · 10/01/2019 20:47

He could well be cold, I'd be freezing laying on top of the covers with only a vest and PJs on!

kaytee87 · 10/01/2019 20:49

For tonight why don't you put a cardigan / jumper and socks over his pjs so he's a little more comfortable until you can get a sleeping bag. My son thinks it's a treat to lie under my dressing gown for some reason (I remove the tie), you could try that as a blanket?

BackIntoTheSun · 10/01/2019 20:57

DD 16mo has a baby grow (short sleeves), pjs and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. She also has a blanket on top but likely doesn't keep it on all night cos she moves around. She often comes in our bed partway through the night and she stays in the sleeping bag on top of our duvet

Rarotonga · 10/01/2019 20:59

Another vote for a Jojo sleep snuggled with a vest and PJs underneath. The arms are removable with poppers and I have removed these as our house is quite warm.

ThatsNotNiceRoger · 10/01/2019 21:02

Mine wore the Mothercare wadded sleep suits which are 2.5 togs, so if they kicked off any covers they were still warm.

Willow4987 · 10/01/2019 21:05

I use the gro bags website to give me an indication of what my LO should be wearing dependent on room temp.

Obviously they say to use their bags but I just look at the tog they recommend and use a cheaper alternative.

Depends on the room temperature.

DS's room is currently 19 degrees and he is in a short sleeved vest, PJs and a warm winter sleeping bag (3 tog). He sleeps alone in a cot with his teddy.

His room will drop to about 16 degrees at 3-4am and any less and I find he wakes up cold at this time.
