Why the fuck is thrush treatment so fucking expensive?!

I’ve just paid £14 for one tablet and a small tube of cream
Fourteen fucking pounds!
AIBU to think that’s bloody ridiculous
I bet if men had burning vaginas it’d be a lot cheaper to get hold of 😤

I pay £2 for a tube of clotrimazole 1% cream (same ingredient as canisten). It's not as fast but always does the job for me.

Ethel80 · 10/01/2019 12:22

The generic stuff is fine, that's what you'd get on prescription.

Dimsumlosesum · 10/01/2019 12:22

From eBay should I say.

NoParticularPattern · 10/01/2019 12:24

I’m with you! I get thrush with hideous frequency when I’m pregnant. Coming up 12 weeks and I’ve had it twice so far. I can’t quite cope with waiting a fortnight to see a doctor to prescribe me it so I end up buying it. Thankfully still have some cream left from the last bout (and the three before that with DD) but ONE pessary was £10. Even the pharmacist apologised for how dear it is. I know I can get it online for a lot less, but that involves waiting for the post and trying not to think about my vagina being on fire in the meantime.

Polarbearflavour · 10/01/2019 12:34

It’s all part of the patricarchy to keep women in their place.

Ellapaella · 10/01/2019 12:43

The tablet is under a tenner at most chemists, just asked for the unbranded one (not canestan)

Branleuse · 10/01/2019 12:51

I got some of these and always have some in my cupboard. £8 for 6, and it is exactly the same clotrimazole as canesten is.

Also if you prefer the tablets, you can get generic flucanazol tablets over the counter in the chemist for about £2. Just ask for generic rather than branded.

Moondancer73 · 10/01/2019 14:06

I've bought online and keep the pessaries in hand now because if I get a bad bout I couldn't wait for it to come through the post. It literally is half the price

littlemeitslyn · 10/01/2019 14:57

😱🙄

HappenstanceMarmite · 10/01/2019 15:01

Link to that chemist please!

IratePanda · 10/01/2019 15:17

I have a friend who is a pharmacist that told me to use a clotrimazole 1% athletes foot cream. If you put them side by side, the ingredients are identical and at a fraction of the price. I am diabetic so prone to thrush and have used it many a time, always clears it up. Wink

Bringbackthestripes · 10/01/2019 15:32

Yep clotrimazole 1% is about £1.99 in B&M and is the same as canesten cream

For fluconazole tablet £1.99

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/01/2019 16:08

Oh I should’ve asked on here before I went to the pharmacy this morning 🙈

Branleuse · 10/01/2019 16:16

I dont have a link to a chemist because its been a while, and it was just a local chemist. However some are more expensive than others

Branleuse · 10/01/2019 16:17

pills are nowhere near as effective as the pessaries anyway

SilverDragonfly1 · 10/01/2019 16:34

You can't get the generics in any of the half dozen pharmacies in my town now. And when you still could the price kept going up.

I reckon there is some funny business going on by canestan buying up supplies or something, but I also tried to research it recently and found there has been an ongoing problem with getting fluconazole drips for hospitals due to manufacturing problems, so maybe that affects it too. Plus chemists holding generics back for prescriptions.

Pinkheart, I haven't been able to find it on amazon for ages either!

SylvanianFrenemies · 10/01/2019 16:39

That's a total rip off. They just charge that because they know people are desperate.

My local pharmacy charges 3.50 for the tablet, a bit more reasonable.

NewYorkDoll3 · 10/01/2019 16:41

A tube of canestan is £6 for the 1% and £6.50 for the 2% (roughly.)

Why on earth are you paying £14 a tube?!

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 10/01/2019 16:44

I got mine for free on minor ailments scheme in the pharmacy (Northern Ireland)

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 10/01/2019 20:36

I wish I'd read this thread a week ago! Fwiw when I took the oral tablet once (free after a check at the sti clinic Blush) the relief was almost instantaneous... the Pessary and cream are dragging on a bit Angry

ResistanceIsNecessary · 10/01/2019 20:44

If you get absolutely desperate and cannot get to a chemist (or are skint) then a tampon dipped in natural or greek yoghurt will help ease the burning. The "fall out" (sorry!) is a wee bit messy but a pad or pantyliner will take care of that.

FatimaLovesBread · 10/01/2019 20:48

I can confirm that the athlete foot 1% clotrimazole is exactly the same as the thrush cream. I work for a company that manufactures it

maddiemookins16mum · 10/01/2019 20:51

Not forgetting the prescription cost for antibiotics that causes the flipping thrush in the first place (well me anyway). Now if I get a script for antibiotics I just buy the Canesten at the same time.

Dragongirl10 · 10/01/2019 20:53

Taking acidophillus ( not sure of the spelling) probiotic prevents thrush really well.
