To ask if you're stockpiling for Brexit...

Arkos · 10/01/2019 07:20

Genuinely curious question....
If you are stockpiling for Brexit are you a) making sure you've a free bottle of your favourite wine in just in case it's tricky to obtain and there might be some inconvenience or b) stockpiling enough essentials for months as you are really afraid people will starve.

And if it's b.... what measures have you taken/will take to protect your stash.

One thing I'm doing in the next couple of weeks is scheduling a dental check up. Last year I had some work done which included having an inlay made in the EU. I have no idea if we hard Brexit if that would still be possible or if there are regulatory issues/ if it would cost more/ if it would take longer to deliver into the UK given additional customs checks, but having had an abscess in the past I don't want to take risks with my teeth.

I'd also be interested to hear if anyone knows anything about possible impacts on availability of the contraceptive pill? Mine is manufacturered in the EU. Contraception is something else which I wouldn't want to take risks with.

bellinisurge · 11/01/2019 20:20

Sorting out dental stuff is an excellent idea.

katienana · 11/01/2019 21:51

Friend of mine is a dentist and a lot of their supplies come from the EU and can't be stored for long. She was specific about what it was they use but i can't remember what it was. She thinks they will have to close when their stuff runs out. Sorry about how vague and shit this post is!!!
And yes I'm prepping Grin

mobyduck · 11/01/2019 22:02

We live in a country where people rang 999 when KFC ran out of chicken, you can be damn she they're going to panic buy

We panic-buy before a BH Weekend, March will be murder in the supermarkets (maybe literally )!

scaryteacher · 11/01/2019 22:07

I have just been to Sainsbury and stocked up with peanut butter and custard creams and lots of tea in case I can't get back to the UK to restock for a while, and in case the British shop runs out of stock. I will be asking a friend who is going back in Feb to bring me back more lurpak, cheddar, baked beans and tuna, as those cost a fecking fortune here.

Crunchymum · 11/01/2019 22:33

I've ordered some extra beans, spaghetti hoops, pasta, rice, tuna, soup and wine to go in the store cupboard. We'll be sorted Grin

Next week I'll order extra medicine and loo / kitchen roll / cleaning stuff.

PaintingOwls · 14/01/2019 17:15

I've been stocking up on discount pasta from Waitrose because of this thread.

AutumnCrow · 14/01/2019 17:33

Asda has packets of gingernut biscuits for 22p, dated 'best before' September.

A couple of people were stockpiling UHT milk (the green carton semi-skimmed). I've noticed it keeps running out.

Having almost been crushed by a cataract of Asda's Gingernuts when I recklessly opened a cupboard this evening, I strongly suspect DH discovered this for himself. DH is inordinately fond of ginger nuts as part of a cheesecake base or in a fridge cake. I hope that this means he intends to lay in a stash of decent chocolate.

popcornwizard · 15/01/2019 22:58

Sad to admit that I am. Freezer and cupboards always full anyway for winter due to rural location. Fuel tanks will be filled (about 10,000 litres, but for price spike rather than supply).

Also buying now the bulk of agrochemicals needed for spring, fertiliser tank is already full. Some livestock farmers are stock piling nutrients.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/01/2019 22:58

I definitely will be now. (still eating the christmas supplies)

toothpaste definitely needs to go on the list..
medicines for dd,
toiletries etc.

Sturmundcalm · 17/01/2019 17:48

kind of brexit, kind of snowmaggedon. the two litres of bacardi are definitely brexit - although they won't go wrong if we're snowed in for a month...

YeOldeTrout · 17/01/2019 17:59

Olive oil. it's the only thing I can think of that seems appropriate, will be affected.

Just hoping I don't develop illness or get injured. Am unassured that hospitals will have their usual consumables.

KateArronax · 18/01/2019 09:38

Stockpiking no but buying a bit extra each time I'm at the shops, it's wise to stock up a bit.

I don't trust the organisational abilities of the government.

KateArronax · 18/01/2019 09:50

Stockpiling not stockpiking!

BusterGonad · 18/01/2019 19:19

This thread is a joke! Honestly people, calm the fuck down!

WickedGoodDoge · 18/01/2019 19:26

I’ll probably buy a couple of the large bags of dog food for my dog next time I’m at Pets at Home. I’m not so fussed about the rest of us. I bake a lot so tend to have lots of flour/sugar/eggs/butter/yeast in anyway so we could live off bread, biscuits and cornbread for quite a long time if needed. Grin

bellinisurge · 18/01/2019 19:31

Actually @BusterGonad , that's what people with experience of prepping have been saying on her regularly for the past several months as well as offering practical budget friendly advice on taking proportionate steps to get a small buffer of food in.
But stomping about and sniping obviously makes you feel good.

Shitmewithyourrhythmstick · 18/01/2019 20:01

Getting a few bits and bobs in to tide you over so you don't have to engage too heavily in any panic buying scrums is being calm.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/01/2019 20:39

At the pharmacy today, one of my meds still hadn't come through, though the other items had arrived several days ago. Ordered over a week ago. I joked to the pharmacist that at least we couldn't blame it on Brexit yet. She said she had already seen more supply issues than normal, and thought it was due to attempts to stockpile centrally. As it happens, if I run out of that one it won't kill me. The same is harder to say of several others I'm on...at the least I wouldn't be able to work without them. And for two of them, yes, if they stayed unavailable it would ultimately kill me.

Not as easy to stockpile prescription meds as food. I'm ordering a couple of days earlier each month, so at least I'll have 14 days leeway between ordering and running out, rather than the usual more just in time approach...

Cheeringmeup · 19/01/2019 00:35

nocoolnamesleft
Well that’s a lot more important than some backup pasta!
Hope you continue to be able to get your medication - bit of perspective for the rest ofthere maybe?

Cheeringmeup · 19/01/2019 00:36

*rest of us there

Fluffyears · 19/01/2019 00:50

If the beast from the east was anything to go by i’m Going to freeze some bread and milk. It was ridiculous, couldn’t get bread for 2 weeks!

ShirtyFlirty · 19/01/2019 00:54

I haven't read the full thread, yes I have a little put aside, it's easing Brexit No Deal anxiety.
