To ask if you're stockpiling for Brexit...

Arkos · 10/01/2019 07:20

Genuinely curious question....
If you are stockpiling for Brexit are you a) making sure you've a free bottle of your favourite wine in just in case it's tricky to obtain and there might be some inconvenience or b) stockpiling enough essentials for months as you are really afraid people will starve.

And if it's b.... what measures have you taken/will take to protect your stash.

Its the very opposite of selfish

Crackedvase · 10/01/2019 08:26

We have a small stockpile, and will add items weekly with our regular shopping

It all non perishable, and will be used regardless.

We have also started not letting fuel run below half tank
Winter coats in next sizes bought, and we have extra solid fuel stored

Have been batch cooking and slowly filling a deep freezer. Again, if it turns out we didn't need to worry, it will get used.

I also squirrelled some medicines away, and loo roll etc

I’m going to see what the outcome of the vote on Theresa May’s deal is next week. It’ll probably be voted down, at which point she has to come back to parliament with a plan within 3 days.

If I find that reassuring (big if), then I won’t stockpile. If I don’t (most likely), then I’ll start to.

MaverickSnoopy · 10/01/2019 08:28

A bit. We always have some tins in the cupboard, grains, lentils, pasta and baking things so mainly adding to that by buying a few extra things each week and have been doing so since about August. Won't be filling trollies in mass panic or even building up a huge stash but do want to have enough if everyone else panics in a no deal situation, that way we're already sorted.

We have to live frugally so often stock up on offers and rather than using them all before we buy more, we buy more with some left to ensure we have a stash. It's reassuring to know that if we had a job loss etc then we'd be ok. When growing up we had several extra cupboards for this reason. Interestingly I asked my mum and it hadn't occurred to her to prep for brexit - although she said she will buy a few extras just in case.

I really haven’t. I am sure I’ll manage to feed and clothe my family. I really can’t see it being anything more than a temporary minor inconvenience

This ^^ I didn't vote leave either, before anyone asks.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 10/01/2019 08:42

No. Because most of the stuff people are stocking up on isn't going to impacted by supply problems. The main issues are going to be with fresh and perishables, salads, fruits, the come from the EU. You have to think what actually comes through Dover on a daily basis.

Anything that comes in via a container port, either from the EU, or via the EU, will not be affected.

I have been looking at my weekly shop, and it is actually quite interesting to see where everything comes in from. The majority of my shop is UK origin.

Also, we will not run out of fuel, do you really think this gets imported daily via truck? or power, it comes via pipelines and is not subject to import checks or restrictions.

Kazzyhoward · 10/01/2019 08:43

For years I've always stockpiled every Autumn ahead of the Winter weather and start to use it around Easter once the Winter weather has gone. This year, I just won't start using it so quickly to wait and see what happens, though I don't expect any massive problems. Of course, there will inevitably be a short term storage of random items that may get held up, but I certainly don't expect to see empty shelves of everything in the shops.

malificent7 · 10/01/2019 08:46

I am...not becauase i think there will be mass shortages but i think there will be a rise in food prices.
I struggle enough now.

malificent7 · 10/01/2019 08:48

Even a 10p ruse on each food item will make a impact so im not taking any chances. Plus....i don't trust the government.

Flev · 10/01/2019 08:53

I figure my husband and I will cope fine if there are less options available (which seems more likely to me than a whole scale lack of food) - but I am trying to make sure we have a month's worth of baby milk powder in for my baby, as she'll still be exclusively on milk then.

cloudtree · 10/01/2019 08:57

That is to not understand the stocking process though.

Shopper buys product y manufactured in the UK. All those who generally buy product x (not available) now also buy product y (plus everyone starts to buy extras since they have seen that product x isn't available). Product y experiences double the demand overnight (plus potentially other supply issues since most uK products use ingredients, packaging etc from overseas). Product Y cannot fulfil the increased demand. Shelves clear. Neither product is available.

I stock up every year for the Jan - march-is time as live remote up a road that isn't gritted, snow, end of supply line for the supermarket = not great at the supermarket if I can even get to it.
But this year added a few more bits and bobs to stretch that extra way incase its still a cluster fuck into April and beyond.

squishee · 10/01/2019 09:06

How come? How does it get from the container port to the supermarket shelf?

O4FS · 10/01/2019 09:07

I bought some long life milk. Mainly because these threads are making me wonder if I should.

Bloomcounty · 10/01/2019 09:10

I also get cut off in bad weather, so keep a well stocked supply of the basics every winter anyway. I have concerns about my medication supply, and wish I could get a month extra, just in case. Its not something I can do without, so its a worry, but I have been told by my pharmacy that they're keepingvit in stock....I just have to trust them.

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/01/2019 09:15

I’m not stockpiling really (can’t afford to) but I’m not letting things completely run out before I buy more like I used to iyswim
So I’ve got a few extra tins of beans, tomatoes, tuna, extra formula for baby, some packets of crackers and a few bits of frozen veg atm - all quite random
I’m thinking of making a proper list and maybe putting things somewhere separate than the normal food so it doesn’t get used

I’m mainly doing it because I hate shopping at Christmas with the busy shops and empty shelves and I imagine it’ll be worse come brexit time when people start to panic so I’d like to not ‘need’ anything and dodge a shop or skip a weekly shop if I want to

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/01/2019 09:16

I am worried about medication though - does anyone know which if any will be affected?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 09:25

@Donald - any could be affected. Even if it is manufactured in the UK, it could be affected by shortages of imported raw materials, shortages of lorry drivers (most are EU citizens), or even something as silly as shortages of the packaging it's stored in.

If you need it, and can stock up, I would.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 10/01/2019 09:29

No I'm not. No intention of doing so personally. My company is though. It's importing about 6 months' extra product to avoid delays at ports. If lots of other companies do the same, there could actually be a glut of stuff hanging around in warehouses that will need to be shifted when the sky doesn't fall in after March.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/01/2019 09:31

when the sky doesn't fall in after March

While a second referendum is looking more likely, I wouldn't bet on it.

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/01/2019 09:33

Thanks Avocados I had even thought about packaging and things like that

I have 2 DC with allergies so I can get some OTC antihistamines rather than rely on their prescribed ones, it’s mostly DS1s inhalers I’m worried about and the doctors aren’t great about giving out spares, I may have to tell a few white lies and get a couple of extras in, it’s just for piece of mind really

DonaldDucksTowel · 10/01/2019 09:33

Peace* Blush

reallyanothername · 10/01/2019 10:08

Yes I've begun buying a few extra tins or dried goods each shop, stuff that will be used anyway if all turns out ok.
