I moved into my council home in 2011 so around 8 years ago. When I moved in I asked the council if there was an asbestos in the house ( it's a 1935 house) and I was given a survey from sample homes of the same time in my area. I looked at the report in my email and then just forgot about it. Then today i was trying to email the housing and find the address in my email as I was searching that email with report came up, I forgot about it over the years but referred back to it today. He report said that the asbestos is present in some tiles and on a sink pad. I was aware in my kitchen floor when I moved in there was some tiles of some sort so I just put ceramic tiles over them but the tiles that were in when I moved in were not in Great condition they were cracking on the edges. But I just left it. Then I checked under the sink thinking surely they wouldn't have left the sink in from decades ago with an asbestos sink pad on!!! I was told when I moved in this was a new kitchen because the last owner let the previous one go to a mess. Low and behind o check and that sink pad is still there !!! Asbestos was banned from 1984 so this kitchen has been in this house since before 1984 and they couldn't even Been bothered to change the sink in all that time!! I'm so angry and upset. This kitchen is disgusting ! All they do is screw cupboards back on. And also the tiles are worrying me now as well. They knew about these asbestos products but didn't inform me UNTILL I enquired yet they are aware of them ! Imagine I started to rip up the tiles to put my own on and didn't know, it's a good job I just out mine in top. I'm worried now because after pulling up the grip between living room and kitchen I could see the tiles some parts handing off.

I don't think people realise how thin the flooring that was left in is that's why people think I'm putting tiles on tiles. Its honestly not the way your imaging it

No, you haven’t kept them safe. If there are problems with them, they’re of your own doing. You did the damage to them. What possessed you to put tiles on top of tiles? And that’s the council’s problem how? Confused

No one in the world lives with asbestos tiles? Don’t be stupid. Many of us do. The tiles are fine if you leave them alone. Which you didn’t.

householdprobs · 10/01/2019 16:51

I didn't damage them don't you read????? They were damaged already when I moved in!
And what do you think I should have done ? Out of interest?

OP posts:
WhenISnappedAndFarted · 10/01/2019 16:51

Did you ask for them to be removed all those years ago?

householdprobs · 10/01/2019 16:53

@MrsAriadneOliver I did leave them alone, That's why I covered them. It was actually more dangerous leaving them uncovered because constant walking around on them will just make the wear and tear worse. Who would live with black ugly asbestos tiles though? Who?

OP posts:
boomboomshakalack · 10/01/2019 16:54

I will ask the question again...did you you ask for the asbestos tiles to be removed the last time, before you decided to cover them up?

longtimelurkerhelen · 10/01/2019 16:55

I have private messaged you @householdprobs

thegardenfairy · 10/01/2019 16:56

You could have removed them or asked the council to remove them before laying new tiles?

User758172 · 10/01/2019 16:56

So people are saying I should have
A) lived with asbestos tiles in my kitchen

They would have been fine. Not dangerous to you. And you didn’t care for eight years.

and not bother to put my own in so live with ugly cracked asbestos tiles

ugly and cracked, no big deal. If you want new, fine, but do it properly and don’t put tile on top of tile!

B) if I want to put my own tiles in then I need to to pay for asbestos tiles to be removed at my own expense when it's 'not my house

You want it both ways. It’s your house when you want to put in new tiles, but suddenly the council’s when you want them to remove the old tiles that would have been fine had you not damaged them.

I would have tot ask the council if I can remove them anyway, and what makes you think they will agree. The council were lazy to leave them in. They could have took them out when the property was empty before I moved in. Why would you think it's acceptable to leave something dangerous in a house and expect a TENANT to deal with

You didn’t give a shit for eight years! And you’ve made them dangerous - they wouldn’t have been if you’d left them alone

No sympathy for you. Pay for the removal yourself. Get some to do a proper job this time.

householdprobs · 10/01/2019 17:01

@boomboomshakalack no I did not and I'll be honest and say why. Because when I moved in, I didn't think they were actually tiles, and that's because they don't look like usual tiles. It's not square by square flooring it's just flooring which was black and slightly plasticky looking. I thought this was just the way the house was made, I did read the report about being asbestos tiles in the house but as it said 'sample report from a similar property' I thought maybe some have them and some don't because this flooring really doesn't look like typical tiles. I read about the sink bad but assumed because the guy told me it's a new kitchen ( and he really did say this which now I know as a lie and that's just unprofessional) I thought the sink pad was gone. Fast forward till this week I so happened to come accross that email today and did my reasearch and realised all this. I pulled up my carpet grip ( that is between living room and kitchen door) and saw the tiles were damaged at this area.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 10/01/2019 17:01

@boomboomshakalack I don't think we're going to get an answer to that question, which means it probably is a no.

User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:01

Who would live with black ugly asbestos tiles though? Who?

Now you’re being ridiculous. Some of us in private rental have no choice, even if it is - god forbid - ugly. They were no danger to you. You didn’t give a shit for eight years.

Now you’ve cocked up and laid tiles on top, they will be damaged. That’s not the council’s fault though. It’s yours.

householdprobs · 10/01/2019 17:08

@MrsAriadneOliver it is the councils fault because they never informed me did they? I had to ask for this info after weeks of living here. I only found out about this after I laid the tiles. I got the report weeks after moving in.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 10/01/2019 17:10

Where does the council get the money from to pay?

I've already said. From rents! There are millions of council houses that dont have a mortgage, the houses have paid for themselves over and over again.

User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:15

@gamerchick

And are the people paying those rents taxpayers, by any chance?

User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:17

@householdprobs

I wish you’d take some responsibility for your actions. Why lay tile over tile? Do a bodge job and then whine that no one told you about the old tiles? You caused this problem!

householdprobs · 10/01/2019 17:19

@MrsAriadneOliver doesn't make a difference if they are tax payers or not, everyone has to pay rent, private or social housing and any money that is paid goes into either the landlords pocket or the social housing landlords. What different does being a tax payer make? Rent had to be paid regardless. If you claim benefits and live in a private rented property tax payers money is going to that landlord then he will repair and make improvements to a property he owns with tax payers money too Confused

OP posts:
householdprobs · 10/01/2019 17:20

@MrsAriadneOliver imagine I removed asbestos tiles and it caused health problems to my family ??? What would you say then!

OP posts:
User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:22

@householdprobs

You could ‘fork out’ for someone to do a proper job. What a novel idea Confused

gamerchick · 10/01/2019 17:22

And are the people paying those rents taxpayers, by any chance?

Ah but that's not what you meant though was it? You thought council houses we're costing you personally as a tax payer like all those who link SH to benefits.

Those who live in a council house pay rent which goes into the kitty for the upkeep of the houses yes.

User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:25

@gamerchick

No, that wasn’t what I meant. Don’t presume to know what I think.

User758172 · 10/01/2019 17:27

Those who live in a council house pay rent which goes into the kitty for the upkeep of the houses yes

Upkeep of the homes. Not repairing bodge jobs that the OP did. She caused it. She can fix it. Does no one take any responsibility for their actions?

gamerchick · 10/01/2019 17:28

Well it was pretty obvious or you wouldn't have used it as a dog, considering you had no idea how council houses we're funded a couple of pages ago.

gamerchick · 10/01/2019 17:29

OP just cover the floor up with lino and don't think about it anymore.

BriennetheBeauty · 10/01/2019 17:29

@householdprobs
But the council probably weren’t expecting you to go and tile over their tiles were they!
