Can I use a hairdryer in hotel room at night?

I’ve been travelling all day and just arrive at my hotel. I feel gross and want to shower before bed. Is it acceptable to have the hairdryer on past midnight in a hotel though? I’m here for a conference, I don’t know who’s next door to me but it might be somebody I know. I don’t stay in posh hotels much (this one os very nice, 4 star) how soundproofed are they?!

Can you hear anything coming from the room next to you?

I’d probably use the hairdryer on low!

whatsthepointthen · 09/01/2019 00:13

I would.

Returnofthesmileybar · 09/01/2019 00:13

Or course you can! Unless you plan to leave it running all night it's a non issue, it's a matter of minutes and if the person next door has cause to complain a. You will never know and b. It's to the hotel about their soundproofing not your use of the hairdryer!

Nemo1986 · 09/01/2019 00:13

I cam’t hear anything from the nearby rooms, but it’s gone midnight...

I'd say YWBU. Hotel walls can be paper thin sometimes. Could you airdry it in a high bun while you sleep for nice waves in the morning?

Nemo1986 · 09/01/2019 00:15

Okay. I will then. I don’t want to annoy anyone but then I guess you’re right, it won’t be for long.

Just do it. I would honestly not be annoyed, you would be finished so quickly.

potatoscone · 09/01/2019 00:15

Can't you have a shower and not use a hairdryer?

Nemo1986 · 09/01/2019 00:16

Ah Agatha, crosspost. I don’t know if I could comfortably sleep with damp hair Sad

I absolutely wouldn't - you can often hear when your neighbour has the TV on on a hotel room! I'd do what pp said and tie in a high bun

ILoveChristmasLights · 09/01/2019 00:19

I wouldn’t.

Just towel dry it and go to sleep. Your instinct was correct, it’s pretty selfish to wake people up because you fancy drying your hair. 15 minutes or whatever feels like forever at this time of night and they may not be able to get back to sleep.

Howhot · 09/01/2019 00:20

I'd say it's fine in a hotel. People stay in hotels for all kinds of reasons which include late nights and early starts 🤷

cavycavy · 09/01/2019 00:21

Wear the free shower cap!

ILoveChristmasLights · 09/01/2019 00:22

Then have a shower but don’t wash your hair ‍🤷🏻‍♀️

I have very long hair, I often wash it before bed and never dry it. Sometimes it’s a bit fluffy in the morning so I just wash it, no big deal.

SpoonBlender · 09/01/2019 00:23

JFDI. Four star hotels are generally well soundproofed. If you're nervous, do it in the bathroom which will be even more so.

BlackPrism · 09/01/2019 00:25

Yes. It's a hotel, if it's not properly soundproofed then that's the hotels fault not yours. I've never heard any sound from another hotel room?

InSightMars · 09/01/2019 00:25

Just have your shower and dry your hair. Hotels have all kinds of noises going on, soundproofing is pretty good in higher end brands I find so most people can filter them out. Unless it’s someone actively thumping on the walls or door and crashing about in the corridors, screaming, guests generally hear very little. Travelers are arriving and leaving at all hours too, I’ve often had leave at stupid am to get to the airport and damned right I’m having a shower and drying my hair before leaving. Similarly with arriving late if I’ve been traveling all day, I’ll take a shower before bed. Your bathroom is probably on a wall adjoining the next room’s bathroom anyway so the sound will be muffled if heard at all from that room’s sleeping area.

SluggishSnail · 09/01/2019 00:29

It will be fine, hotel hairdryers aren't that noisy.
Put the TV on low volume if you want to confuse the sound.

Bouledeneige · 09/01/2019 00:29

Yes of course. Everyone does. Its white noise and not half as annoying as the TV and people banging doors and talking down the corridor till the early hours.

Chouetted · 09/01/2019 00:31

I would do it - showers are far noisier than hairdryers, especially if the pipes squeal or clunk.

A hairdryer is broadband white noise - no different to having a fan on.

Endofrelationship · 09/01/2019 00:31

I would. A hotel should be properly sound proofed, if it isn't it's not your fault.

Chouetted · 09/01/2019 00:33

@sluggishsnail TVs on the other hand are NOT white noise and will absolutely annoy the tits off anyone who hears them

ninalovesdragons · 09/01/2019 00:35

Stay in lots of hotels. Wouldn't think twice esp if a nice one, go for it.

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 09/01/2019 00:39

Decent hotels usually have decent soundproofing.

And in any case, are you certain that there is someone in the room next door? Occupancy rates vary, a lot. It is entirely possible that half the hotel is empty and there is nobody next to you.

Even if there is, I don’t think it is a peroblem, just use the hairdryer and get some sleep.

HostessTrolley · 09/01/2019 00:39

A hairdryer in the next room would be less intrusive than someone having noisy sex in the room next door.,,
