to think just because it's not illegal to smoke outdoors doesn't mean it's always ok

Three of us were queueing at the bus stop this morning when along came a man who stood right beside us and lit up a cigarette.

Myself and my mum were sitting on a park bench chatting yesterday when a young woman plonked herself on the other end (about 18 inches from us) and enjoyed a cigarette.

I've also just been reading the thread about people standing around hospital doorways and underneath patients' windows puffing away on cigarettes.

You will often be told by smokers that it's legal because it's outside, as if that makes it okay.

AIBU to think even when you're outside, smokers should show some consideration for the people around them?

Off you go and get your petition to Parliament.

Oh please point out this ultimate slactavism, I need a good laugh to share.

I am one of the most evil ex smokers who make a huff about smoking, but I would love to see this just mentioned and brushed aside in parliament as the waste of time it is.

I will go back and search, but I am secretly hoping its a change.org petition as well.

Justanotherlurker · 08/01/2019 21:01

Ahh, its dissapointing.

it was some kind of pre-virtue signalling slacktavism (they were too lazy after all)... that's spoiled it now.

CheshireChat · 08/01/2019 22:25

I don't mind most smokers as the majority I've been around have been perfectly mannered and their health isn't my concern. I've only had an issue with a woman who sat right next to us while we were eating and decided to light up Hmm.

I do wish pubs would keep some areas outside for non smokers though.

hibbledibble · 08/01/2019 22:31

Yanbu. I have had people light up right next to me when I have been heavily pregnant, and when I had a tiny baby. It's incredibly selfish to not think of others before smoking.

crazycatgal · 08/01/2019 22:51

It's really inconsiderate.

When I lived in halls at uni the cleaners used to stand directly underneath my first floor window every day and light up and whenever my window was open it would waft in.

Fireandflames666 · 08/01/2019 22:59

I really hope that one day in the future it's banned from public places. I'm absolutely sick of people smoking where ever they feel like despite signs etc. I don't want to smell like or breath in somebody else bad habit, it's gross.

Purpleartichoke · 08/01/2019 23:02

I do think smoking should be banned from all public places. Or at least effectively banned. Something like you should be able to smoke within 100 meters of another person. Luckily I live in a town where public smokers are incredibly rare. I often go weeks without seeing a person with a cigarette so when I do it is always a bit shocking.

Mumminmum · 12/01/2019 12:09

Hi @nicoala1 and @Justanotherlurker Sorry for the late reply. Busy week. I think we just don't drink enough to get hangovers. We drink the same amount as we used to, when we go out.
And @Justanotherlurker I thought that people who try derail the conversation are those who don't have comeback. I don't feel I have anything to defend when it comes to car pollution and other forms of pollution as I have always been living in an environmentally friendly way (low consumption, no car untill I was in my thirties, still walk a lot, make do and mend, use less plastic and chemicals, eat less meat, etc. ) and have been doing even more in that regard in the last 6 years. We could do more and we are yet to figure out what this year's project will be, but hey. At least we try.

Thisnamechanger · 12/01/2019 12:31

How traumatic for you Grin

lightningpaw · 12/01/2019 12:35

YANBU. In Japan, it’s illegal to smoke on the streets. They have booths that people can smoke in. An idea that should be implemented everywhere.

Greatorb · 12/01/2019 12:35

I'm hoping babies are banned from public places too. The noise they emit is incredibly antisocial and the smell is horrendous at times. Parents can be really selfish.

fullforce · 12/01/2019 12:40

I like to think I’m a very thoughtful smoker and quite a lot of us are. I cross the road when there are children and pause smoking when passing others so no clouds are in anyone’s face. I even make a point of where I stand in my garden, on private property, so as not to affect my neighbours. It’s very easy in this vast world to stand somewhere outside smoking without forcing it on anyone else’s lungs

WhirlieGigg · 12/01/2019 12:55

I really hope the day will come when smoking anywhere except in your own home or specifically designated areas is illegal

The problem is that people will smoke in their homes around babies and children, and not give a shit because it’s legal. Perhaps it should be illegal to smoke within 20ft of a minor?

Asta19 · 12/01/2019 19:36

@lightningpaw

That’s true but you can also smoke indoors in a lot of places there. Would you like that implemented too?

lightningpaw · 12/01/2019 20:15

@Asta19 I didn’t say anything about indoors ?! I know they do and no I wouldn’t want that. Didn’t say we should adopt all of their rules in regard to smoking. Just think it’s a much better system they use on the streets. I presume you’re a smoker!

TheRealJoseph · 12/01/2019 22:37

Still waiting for my local to be crammed to the rafters with all these non smokers. So far it's still the same ol' crowd of smokers.

Question for all those anti-smokers, why can mps still smoke inside their bars?

TheDarkPassenger · 12/01/2019 22:44

Non smoker here and it doesn’t bother me one bit.

Dutchesss · 12/01/2019 23:07

Set up a picnic with my baby on a field, some people came and set up a picnic about 5ft from us and started smoking. Awful behaviour.

sweetkitty · 12/01/2019 23:10

Oh it should just be banned full stop. I hate smoking with a passion, parents were both heavy smokers putting fags before food.

Asta19 · 13/01/2019 00:26

@lightningpaw

Well yes you can’t just cherry pick the parts you want. Doesn’t work that way. Yes I am a smoker and love spending time in Japan where they have sensible rules!
