to think just because it's not illegal to smoke outdoors doesn't mean it's always ok

Three of us were queueing at the bus stop this morning when along came a man who stood right beside us and lit up a cigarette.

Myself and my mum were sitting on a park bench chatting yesterday when a young woman plonked herself on the other end (about 18 inches from us) and enjoyed a cigarette.

I've also just been reading the thread about people standing around hospital doorways and underneath patients' windows puffing away on cigarettes.

You will often be told by smokers that it's legal because it's outside, as if that makes it okay.

AIBU to think even when you're outside, smokers should show some consideration for the people around them?

More Police to support a ban would be good as they could tackle all the burglaries and other crimes they never attend.
Or will we have citizens arrests for people smoking outside Grin
not going to happen, is it?

There are signs in the play area in our park, nobody takes any notice as they are enforceable, just a request.
I don't smoke in play area but I do in the park, as it's outside and legal.

Ollivander84 · 08/01/2019 18:38

@Parttimewasteoftime vaping isn't the same as second hand smoke. No tar. No cancerous stuff. It's a nicotine replacement and 96% safer for the person using it

Parttimewasteoftime · 08/01/2019 18:53

That is helpful as you were vapers. Strangely I would be fine with smokers in a pub or club I have no health issues. It's just around children I don't agree.

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 18:58

Children I can understand. But if you value their health that much you will have to have a bbq (smoke from the coals....OMG!) or picnic in your smoke free garden, or go indoors to an eaterie on a nice day.

Outdoor smoking is perfectly legal.

CherryPavlova · 08/01/2019 18:59

I’d ban the sale of all tobacco products in the U.K. I’d make all smoking in any public are or area used by the public illegal. It is taking the moral high ground.

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 19:01

Cherry,

Get the petition sorted. All the talk and high moral ground in the world will not change the current legislation at all unless you try to change it via Parliamentary rules.

It is legal to smoke outdoors. Just like a smokey BBQ.

Bluelonerose · 08/01/2019 19:06

I completly agree with you op.
I'm a smoker (I do want to quit) but there is no consideration from some smokers.

I try not to inconvenience others with my smoking and if I'm with others will always ask if they want me to go away to have my disgusting habit.

Smokers just outside the door I can only think is a warmth thing.
Quite a few pubs round here have put outdoor heaters outside which works great getting smokers away from the door.
What you can do in the summer though i don't know.

FireIsRoaring · 08/01/2019 19:07

@CherryPavlova - whilst you’re at it ban - BBQs , alcohol , all fatty foods, cars .... what a ridiculous statement.

Take away people’s choices ???

Coldshoulders · 08/01/2019 19:11

Hahah ban all the sales of tobacco products? Do the math love country earns a minter from the tax of smokers 😂 there is no way it would ever be banned earns too much money even if it's bad for you taking the moral high ground, you may think smoking is disgusting but so is the attitude of non smokers thinking they have the right to tell other people what they are doing legally is wrong. You may not agree but it doesn't technically make you right as in the eyes of the law it's legal

masterandmargarita · 08/01/2019 19:19

Just think how much tax they could make if they legalised all drugs

CherryPavlova · 08/01/2019 19:22

No, it won’t happen because of the power of the tobacco industry lobby. That doesn’t stop me wishing it could happen. It has to be the most revolting habit that has some social acceptability.
It is legal, sadly. I would take away choice as addiction isn’t a choice and sadly the addiction impacts in all sorts of ways on the families of smokers. It’s not a decision that affects the smoker alone. People don’t have the choice to snort cocaine - there are strong precedence on removing personal choice for greater good.

paslamer · 08/01/2019 19:24

I'm an ex smoker and I was always mindful of where I smoked and who was around. I do remember moving once as a woman with a child in a buggy came and sat next to me. She said I didn't need to and it was ok but I was horrified that she chose to sit where smoke would blow in her child's face - I'd never want to be responsible for that!

Coldshoulders · 08/01/2019 19:32

Exactly now that would be mind boggling lol just because I expressed my views doesn't mean I'm all for legalizing drugs. I Just think that if people want to smoke outside and it's perfectly legal then why don't they have the right to do so? And not all smokers are selfish and the rest, same as alot of non smokers aren't. The thread to me insinuated that "ALL" smokers are selfish pieces of inconsiderate shit, but yet not breaking any laws. Alot of smokers are nice genuine people, smoking is made like it's unheard of, awful, the people who do it are killing other people when truth is the air is polluted as shit full of toxins, and not all from smoking. But the tax on tobacco does bring in alot of money in this country.

Coldshoulders · 08/01/2019 19:38

I but don't get why people think they have the right to tell smokers where to smoke and when to do so, when it's outside, it's legal, people have paid their tax on their tobacco products and then judge smokers! That's all I mean like i wouldn't dream of telling someone not to drink that drink or not to drive their car or not to buy that plastic bag, not to spray that perfume or not to use them cleaning chemicals, it's just too arsey. Country loves the money, get over it rest of the world is pretty fine with it.

Coldshoulders · 08/01/2019 19:39

*just

Justanotherlurker · 08/01/2019 19:53

I think they should legalise drugs, the consensus is changing slowly as well. For all the talk about smoking outdoors, if we follow american and soon to be other european nations lead then the cigarette smell will change into weed.

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 19:59

Smoking outdoors is legal. Deal with it, or get the laws changed. It is that simple.

Iflyaway · 08/01/2019 20:06

I smoke and don't drive but have to put up with coughing belching exhaust fumes while walking around.

There. Fixed it for you. :-)

magpie24 · 08/01/2019 20:08

YANBU, I particularly hated it when pregnant with DD and now feel terrible for DD in her pram if we get stuck near a smoker when out walking or waiting for the bus. I try to cross to the other side of the street if possible. It should be illegal in all public spaces

Bluelady · 08/01/2019 20:09

So where would those of you who want to make tobacco illegal create taxes to make up for the lost revenue?

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 20:19

To me it is just a high moral ground cohort who object to smoking outdoors.

Get the laws changed if you are not happy with current rules. Over to you now.

And I say this as a non smoker, but a person who accepts the current laws and will abide by them whether smoking related or not.

Mumminmum · 08/01/2019 20:23

When the smoking ban was implemented DH and I found out that we don't get hangovers. It turns out the headaches after an evening out used to come from breathing in the smoke. Really weird.

For those who keep going on about cars, every time someone try to debate smoking. Ummm, are you aware that you sound just like the men going "but men also get assaulted" every time someone try to start a debate about domestic violence? Yes, there are many other things that pollute, but this debate is about smoking. Don't derail the conversation.

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 20:28

Mumminmum

Can you tell me why car emissions and city living with all its pollution and global warming trumps a few people smoking outdoors?

Anyway it is legal to do this now. Thank fk people have some freedoms. Nanny State is just ridiculous now.

Justanotherlurker · 08/01/2019 20:31

@Mumminmum

So no one gets hangovers anymore, or is it some anecdotal evidence?

People who use the "stay in lane" comeback are the ones who have no real argument, just for your future reference.

nicoala1 · 08/01/2019 20:42

Why is it never enough for non smokers? I am a non smoker but I cannot understand the attitude of some on here WRT to smoking outdoors.

It is LEGAL to smoke outside.

But many people need a crusade. Off you go and get your petition to Parliament. It is over to you now.

I say this as a person who values freedom under present laws. It's a slippery slope when this happens.

But Brexit will sort it out. No doubt.
