Wibu to paint a white 'no parking' line along the kerbside by my drive?

I've had a white 'no-parking' line to give me access to my driveway for over 20yrs. My driveway is very narrow and you can only pull out in a directly straight line. The line has now worn off and neighbours & their friends/relatives have started parking with the fronts of their cars overhanging my driveway meaning I can't get out. I've missed several appointments because of this recently. I phoned the council to ask about getting it painted back again (there used to be a fee for this) only to be told that due to cuts, they no longer provide the service. The council told me to get a sign made saying vehicles parked across my drive will be towed to the pound - and that in the event I'm blocked in again, I'm to phone the council who'll come & remove the offending vehicle. I don't want to fall out with my neighbours, it costs over £200 to get your car back once it's been impounded. On the previous 3 times I've phoned the police 111 they've told me the cars are registered to my street but there's no phone number listed for them to call & due to data protection, they can't tell me which house the cars belong to. Sometimes I have to go door-to-door knocking & either people don't answer or they don't know whose car it is. This is a major pita for me. I just want to be able to use my drive. Wibu to paint the line back in myself? There'd soon be a huge hugh&cry if I got each car impounded. What do you think?

In my neighbourhood people have been installing their own makeshift dropped kerbs for years, never mind a bit of repainting. Obviously I don't know whether anyone's got into bother over this, but nobody has ever had to remove them.

How well do you know your neighbours?

Can you tell one that you crashed into a (made up description) car that was overhanging your drive and aren’t you a terrible driver and you do hope that your insurance premiums don’t rocket as a result? Would that make the rounds of local gossip and warn people off?

Or just paint a line. That might be easier.

Yes get the vicar to do it for you. If there are any repercussions he will have God on his side.

ChakiraChakra · 07/01/2019 22:01

I've had a google and Amazon seems to sell the stuff. You can even get thermoplastic lines you torch on

stares off into the distance imagining wielding a flamethrower and "accidentally" torching CFers cars in the process

Dollymixture22 · 07/01/2019 22:05

Do it.

JennyHolzersGhost · 07/01/2019 22:05

Can you not just park across your own drive ? Stops anyone else from doing it.

And I wouldn’t start repainting lines unless I had it in writing from the council. I wouldn’t trust phone advice in the slightest.

Get your terminology sorted. You aren't painting a line, you're maintaining it on behalf of your cash strapped Council. All got to do our bit. Big Smile. Carry on painting.

Yes!

RandomMess · 07/01/2019 22:24

Yes to maintaining the line and yes to taking a copy of a letter from the council telling you to get them towed and post one through all the neighbours doors!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/01/2019 22:37

Round here the council would gladly add some more funds to their depleted coffers by fining heavily for this type of thing. It is an offence to alter the highway without the express permission of the highways agency and they may well argue that if the line is that worn off, the restriction was no longer in place and therefore you've created an illegal restriction.

Personally I'd phone again, but I'd look the other way if a neighbour painted their line back in... bear in mind your neighbours may be more inclined to report you if you limit their parking options though!

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 07/01/2019 22:39

If you have some paint left over you could write “CF FREE ZONE” alongside the line.

OnlyaMan · 07/01/2019 22:43

The issue with "yellow lines" and probably white lines in front of dropped kerbs, is that they have to be "Clearly visible". Otherwise a prosecution for contravening them will not succeed.
That is why drivers can get away with parking on spaces in the road where repairs have taken place, and the lines have not been re-instated.
In this case your white line is not "clearly visible". So you have a problem in making the Police/Local Authority prosecute offenders.
But if it is true that your Local Authority will not repaint your lines, then I think if you do it yourself, you are unlikely to get a problem. After all, the initial "Local Order" is still in place. Who will ever know who repainted the lines? Just make sure they look "official".
Gloss paint will not do.

LakieLady · 07/01/2019 22:44

YANBU. You're only maintaining the existing road marking, aren't you? Wink

ifoundthebread · 07/01/2019 22:48

If I get blocked in my drive I sit honking the horn over and over again like a child until I get the attention of the car owner 😂

Iwannasnack · 07/01/2019 22:55

Definitely repaint the lines. But are we really on page 2 and no-ones mentioned penguin bollards yet?!

Hoopaloop · 07/01/2019 22:57

Just put a sign up saying "NO PARKING: I HAVE CHILDREN".

dontfluffthefluffer · 07/01/2019 23:07

@Hoopaloop

😂😂😂😂

Rafabella · 07/01/2019 23:10

Paint the lineSmile

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 07/01/2019 23:18

Since it was officially painted by the Council and totally legal then yes, I definitely would paint it. Make sure you haven't had too much gin first though, you want a nice straight line Grin

MollyHuaCha · 07/01/2019 23:26

Set out some traffic cones and wear a high visibility jacket to do the painting so you look like a council worker.

Maybe pop your head in a balaclava or something so you avoid recognition.

jessstan2 · 07/01/2019 23:31

Sounds like a very good idea. I don't know about the legalities but wouldn't care too much about that.

SynchroSwimmer · 07/01/2019 23:39

Get a third party friend to come and do it for you very early or late on a dry day? You have the materials ready...

Maybe wear a flourescent tabard and just get it done in the space of minutes then scarper?....all low profile.

cdtaylornats · 08/01/2019 00:31

Who's got the time to waste standing around for an hour either side of the job.
