I would never name a child Mia = missing in action. Or Cameron, what if she marries a guy named Cameron and then she is called Cameron Cameron?
Or Claudia because it means “one who is lame“ in Latin.

Princess/hope/faith/charity etc, something-may/may or even worse something-rae. Anything spelt incorrectly.

StresserJoy · 07/01/2019 20:50

Jade and Tiffany - I was bullied by girls with these names in school and now when I meet women with these names, I have to work really hard not to be prejudiced against their names. I know it's irrational, but that doesn't make it go away!

Any "different way" of spelling a name - Emilee, Gavyn, Jayson, Konner, Kymberlie etc.

I think I'm a bit of a name snob.

MidniteScribbler · 07/01/2019 20:53

As a teacher, lots of names have been ruined for me. Anything with a -dyn at the end is completely out. Never had one that wasn't a troublemaker.

Any version of Nathan, Nathaniel or Nate. You can guarantee when you see one of those on your class list that you're in for a bad year.

Lachlan - really bad associations. Never had a well behaved Lachlan in my classes.

Mia - after the "Year of the Four Mias", I just couldn't spend the rest of my life repeating that again.

Anything that is misspelled or drops vowels. I'm looking at you Jaxn.

Florries · 07/01/2019 20:54

Love the bane Myra but obvs it's been ruined by Hindly.

Also love Nora. I don't think it's ugly or frumpy at all!

LIVIA999 · 07/01/2019 20:56

Mason! I loath that name.

SoupOnMyTableNowSir · 07/01/2019 20:57

I know a man who named his child (along with his wife) the same name as the surname of his ex-girlfriend. I am assuming the wife does not know that this her surname. It would be weird. But those of us who have known him 20+ years know it.

They also named one of their children with "Danger" as a middle name.

I think this would be an interesting thread if people posted the names of their own children. But no-one will. My own son's name is on this thread as a hated name, and yet everyone who meets him says they love it.

LIVIA999 · 07/01/2019 20:58

@Applesandpears23 oh god! I'd forgotten that. I read that book again recently and actually Michael is really creepy and unpleasant.

Jenny17 · 07/01/2019 20:59

Virginia

HairyToity · 07/01/2019 21:00

I'm not going to name the ones I dislike, so as to not cause offence. My daughters name has come up on this thread, as has my nephew and one niece. I still like the names though.

My sons name is the name of a bully from school. It's a name my husband loved, and it was one of his suggestions. We couldn't agree on any other names. I also liked this name, just not the boy from school. Anyway it's now my sons name, and I'm glad we used it.

YouFellAsleep · 07/01/2019 21:00

Fizz from Corrie has had a little girl and called her Hilda, I'm sorry but that's just awful, makes me pull this face when I say it 😩

PatchworkDoll · 07/01/2019 21:02

I work in a creche so lots of Jackson/Jaxons, Aryanna/Ariannas, Bobby/Bobbies. Also, Eve, Evie, Sophies, Saoirse, Amelia. Some double barrelled first names;Hannah Mai, Taylor LeeAnn, Amelia Dee, Sophie Ann and it just the girls. Boys are Jack, James some nice Irish names for the boys too.
Personally I hate the name Sonia (a psychopath from work), JoAnn (a bully), Helen, another bully.
Also my real name is one of the aforementioned beginning with ‘K’, but I would not give it to myself as a name.

SnowdropFox · 07/01/2019 21:02

I worked as a sport coach through uni a d many names have been ruined for me! Top of the list is Finley/Finlay/Finn/Fin. Honestly, each of them was a naughty, bullying little snot.

Olddognewtricks2019 · 07/01/2019 21:03

Anything in the top 50, maybe top 100

crispysausagerolls · 07/01/2019 21:03

A lot of names nowadays are very try hard! Oscar is the classic “we aspire to be upper middle class”, along with “Noah”. All the Ancient Greek and Shakespearean names look beautiful but have the same effect for me, just as bad as Tarquin and Horacio but worse!

GalacticChickenShit · 07/01/2019 21:06

Satan.

It's just a really big name to live up to, yunno?

NancyJoan · 07/01/2019 21:06

Adolf. And also Ryan.

DareDevil223 · 07/01/2019 21:07

Is Jaxon really a thing? I've never seen it spelt like that.

My DS is a secondary school teacher and he teaches (amongst others) a Percival and an Ethel. Poor little shits.

starabara · 07/01/2019 21:08

Tyler, Chardonnay, Crystal, Tiffany are all out.

Alexandra is out because I went t o primary school with a bitch named Alexandra.

Eve, Myra, Jennifer, I dislike all of their too, and Jackson, Christopher and Kyle.

ducksgoquack222 · 07/01/2019 21:09

Not sure if it's been said but Sienna. Used to really like the name until I saw it written down and realised it's an anagram of insane and now that's all I can see!

Jezzifishie · 07/01/2019 21:10

MidniteScribbler - does that also apply to the feminine version of Nathaniel/Nathan/Nate? I'll start writing my apology to DD's teachers now Grin

arethereanyleftatall · 07/01/2019 21:14

Phew, neither of my dds names yet.

Anything spelt wrong.
Anything chavvy. Why would you do that? The reality is people judge names. They shouldn't, but they do. So, if you call your child Tyler/Jayden etc, others are going to immediately make a negative judgement of them.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/01/2019 21:15

BadlyArrangedToasties · 07/01/2019 21:17

Finn, Finlay, - there are gazillions of them around here.
Anything hyphenated.

Newnametoconfesshername · 07/01/2019 21:18

@Jezzifishie

My daughter is called one of those names you love but wouldn’t dare ;)

Notso · 07/01/2019 21:18

Not because I dislike the names but because of the local accent which PIL have very strong versions of I ruled out any name with an 'ay' or 'ah' sound, so Grace or Charlie for example. My name has an 'ay' and I hate the way it's pronounced here.

I do find it odd when people use names similar to their surname like Owen Bowen or Joan Jones.
Also when parents choose a first name they'll never use and use the middle name as the child's everyday name because they think the first name goes better with the surname except the child ends up being known as middlename surname anyway except in the odd occasion when someone finds out and goes Shock "your real first name is Persephone not Emma, wow Persephone Brown sounds really odd"
