Can you wear white to a wedding if the brides dress is not white?

Totally hypothetical situation.
Me and a friend were just musing and we’re wondering what the general consensus would be!

I think yes, she thinks no.

Who is BU?

I think it depends on the wedding, and whether or not you're close enough to the bride to ask. We're having a really small wedding (parents and close friends, 12 guests in total) in April. Register office ceremony and high street restaurant for a meal after. I probably wont be in white but haven't found a dress yet - I definitely wont be specifically looking for white/ivory etc., and even if it is white it wont be "bridal". If one of my friends called me and said that she's got a really nice dress for the wedding, but its white, could she wear it, I'd be fine with it.

Not sure if it is just mn weddings or British weddings in general but in Ireland I have never come accross the no white and no black rule - my mil wore white to our wedding......and I went shopping with her and helped pick her outfit! She looked great and not remotely bride-like.

Black is very popular for weddings here, can look very elegant and dressy, not at all funereal.

Last wedding I went to, the bride wore all black. I actually think the main clash was to avoid looking like the bridesmaids (they were in burgundy).
