Out shopping looking for a gift. Saw a top. Their sizing ranged for xs to xl. Person is size 10. Asked assistant what size is a 10 and told medium. So,a size 12 is clearly a large and 14 xl.
I know vanity sizing and all that but this person is at the bottom end of normal weight. How can that be medium?

SerenDippitty · 07/01/2019 20:05

Or the same size hands and feet. Or the same width shoulders. Some women are really tiny and birdlike in build and others are not.

HundredMileStare · 07/01/2019 20:37

size 6 to 8 is very slim if youre a normal height. im 5ft6 and to get to a size 8, I was running 5 miles+ a day and throwing up after meals so please fuck off with a size 12 is overweight.

WTF is a normal height? There is so many things wrong with your post it's ridiculous. And if you're that "triggered" by people saying a 10 is medium and a 12 is large you should probably have known by the opening post not to read on.

This thread is the reason ridiculous vanity sizing continues. Some people won't be happy until perfectly healthy size 6s and 8s are known as the xxxxxxxxs's so everyone can be on the small range too.

slithytove I think a lot of it comes down to this. I am not particularly tall at 5'6" but when I weigh around 8 and a half stone (so low end of healthy in terms of BMI), I am still a size 12 in certain shops and certain cuts. I have wide hips and a rib cage like a barrel - nothing I can do about it. I'm a size 18 in jeans when I'm BMI 25. Not everyone is built the same.

slithytove · 07/01/2019 22:35

And at an average 5’5, when I was at the top end of my healthy BMI (10 stone 10) you could count my ribs due to my massive rib cage and the fact that weight doesn’t go there. Bodies are all so different and to say there is no such thing as big bones is ridiculous.

CoffeeMilkNoSugar · 07/01/2019 22:41

HundredMileStare, I agree. My own TDEE hovers around the 1600kcal/day mark. Eating over that will make me gain weight. An average height, sedentary woman really needs very little food!

Branleuse · 07/01/2019 22:42

Normal , i meant average height, so not particularly short or tall. I didn't mean to imply that people of other heights were abnormal. As I'm sure you realised.

Ollivander84 · 07/01/2019 22:56

@SerenDippitty I am built like a power lifter or someone that should be lugging around hay bales. Broad shoulders, 5ft 10, big hands and feet and muscled even when fat
My friend is tiny. Narrow shoulders and small hands, feet etc. She looks like a little elegant ballet dancer. I feel like a clumsy giant next to her

SerenDippitty · 07/01/2019 23:01

Ollivander84 I have a work colleague who makes me feel like an elephant even though I’m not overweight! She is a couple of inches shorter than me and really really tiny.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/01/2019 23:33

Size 12 is not a Large.

In the 90's smallest sizes were 10's in shops. If you were lucky you might find an 8. A size 6 was 4 leaf clover rare. Size 4 didn't exist. Meanwhile it was pretty easy to find size 16-18.

The size 4-8 has enabled shops aimed at younger women to stock young teenagers, who weren't previously much catered for between kids clothes and adults. It's not accurate to call a size 8 a medium if that doesn't represent the average size for the majority of women.

lljkk · 07/01/2019 23:47

I remember tiny skinny sparrow waist size girls starting university in 1992. I was a giant next to them. I wore a 12 then so they must have bought clothes somewhere, I bet size 6 wasn't too impossible to find.

I'm a 10-12 and H&M can fuck off with their pathetic sizes. The clothes must be cut for adolescent bodies not women with hips and boobs and muscles.

TwiceMagic · 08/01/2019 08:34

I had a tiny sparrow waist when I started university. In 1992 I was in secondary school and my friends and I used to spend our weekends trying on clothes in Topshop and miss selfridge. A 10 was just much smaller and generally fitted; 8s were quite unusual in shops. Now my friends and I would have been trying on 4s and 6s (and probably finding the 6s too big if we were in next).

We wore our jeans on our hips when I started university, which meant they didn’t need to fit your waist.

But, again, it’s not about women’s bodies. It’s that commercially driven (and totally inconsistent) vanity sizing makes it bloody hard to buy clothes. Especially when the measurements given in the size guides are often a work of fiction. It makes no difference if the label says 4 or 10 or 853 so long as you can work out what will fit you.

IrmaFayLear · 08/01/2019 08:56

If you want to see vanity sizing, look at QVC and other places catering to larger people. Size x-small is equivalent to size 20 in H&M!

HundredMileStare · 08/01/2019 10:27

Size 8 and 28F boobs, muscular things and hips too! I think if anything we can agree that not all women are the same and being smaller does not automatically equal you have an adolescent body.

Hmm

if you feel big, do something about it, no need to be nasty against women who are slim. You don't need to be overweight to be feminine, attractive, sexy and healthy.

Branleuse · 08/01/2019 13:28

Its true though. Clothes are not cut for women with boobs or hips unless in specialist shops. I dont mean overweight, I just mean curvy, like pear shapes or hourglass shapes. Im not overweight. Im slap bang in the middle of a healthy BMI, and yet clothes shopping for anything that isnt jersey/lycra can be a nightmare. Things gape at the wrong places, and stretch at others.
Thank god im over worrying about whether this makes me fail at being a woman or somehow obese when im not.

tenbob · 08/01/2019 13:33

@HundredMileStare That was me

I run 15-20 miles a week, walk 4 miles most days and do weights a couple of times a week
A FitBit would have my BMR at over 2000 calories a day

However, because of the damage to my metabolism from Hashimotos, I need under 1750 a day to maintain my weight despite my activity levels
That means I have a slow metabolism. That's what an actual doctor called it Hmm

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 08/01/2019 13:40

The average UK dress size is around 14-16, but a big problem comes from the fact that there is no standard sizing to follow so one shops size 10 is another ones 8 while that same measurement can be a 14 somewhere else.

HundredMileStare · 08/01/2019 14:13

Apologies tenbob you didn't say that in your post and to be fair I've lost track of the amount of people who eat well over what their TDEE would be, take the car to the corner shop and then wonder why they are overweight. And the answer in their heads is usually hormones/ metabolism/ thyroid related- when most of the time those issues are extremely rare and it's just a basic lack of understanding on how much food an average woman actually needs to maintain a slim/ lean body size.

Fitbits are notoriously bad for overestimating your daily allowance.

And the 2000 calorie a day which is (used?) to be on the back of food is usually way more than most women need.

TwiceMagic · 08/01/2019 14:19

It is annoying that clothes are never cut for you to be slim but have boobs at all (or presumably hips, but I don’t have that issue). Tops and dresses are a real issue. Dresses more so, but I don’t want tops that are for people with big shoulders and waists to accommodate what are not actually very impressive boobs (a G cup at 28 back is not actually big).

I just don’t think that contemporary clothing shops serve any woman well. I really, really hate shopping for clothes. It’s deeply depressing when nothing fits or sits right (even if you can find something you like in the first place).

That doesn’t mean we should pretend that women with flatter chests aren’t women though. That’s not fair. Personally I’d love to have no boobs. 😄
