It's nearly my birthday, I fancy a Ted Baker handbag but is it a waste of money?

I really want a Ted Baker handbag - anyone recommend one? I don't want one of the £200 ones - just can't justify it but something maybe £100 or so. AIBU - should I just get something cheaper?

there are some in the sale at the moment which look really good

DillyDilly · 06/01/2019 13:17

If you can afford it and will use it, buy it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/01/2019 13:18

If you can afford one and you really it then why not? It's your birthday Smile

DillyDilly · 06/01/2019 13:18

You’ll get lots of pious replies from posters saying that they’d never spend ‘that much’ on a bag/they’d rather spend the money on their children, etc. - ignore!

Didntwanttochangemyname · 06/01/2019 13:18

If you can afford a Ted Baker handbag why don't you spent the money on a better quality handbag. Ted Baker produces average quality but the name pushes the price up.

cardibach · 06/01/2019 13:19

If you can afford it and will enjoy it, buy it.
I don’t ‘get’ designer stuff though. A handbag for £20 will carry your purse and car keys just as well.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 13:19

Go for it, if you have the money, why not, I have handbags costing much more Blush.

jewllerybox · 06/01/2019 13:19

Didntwanttochangemyname I was wondering that as well but don't know much about handbags - any suggestions?

It’s your birthday, if you want it and can afford it just get it!
Everyone’s different so don’t rely on strangers opinions on this matter.

Yulebealrite · 06/01/2019 13:20

You have a handbag with you constantly. Like your hair it's worth spending a bit on if you can afford it. Better value than expensive clothes which are worn less frequently.

Mulberryandthyme · 06/01/2019 13:21

House of Fraser had some half price. Might be worth a look.

Lbwestf123 · 06/01/2019 13:21

Carvela handbags are nice. Could you go to a department store and have a look at all the different brands to compare quality?

Seniorcitizen1 · 06/01/2019 13:21

Of course it is a waste on money - you pay about £10 for the bag and the rest of the cost is for the logo. A fool and their money is soon parted

Grumpasaurus · 06/01/2019 13:23

I find Ted Baker to be overpriced but not amazing quality; as a PP said the name drives it up.

Coach and Radley and Kate Spade are all much better in terms of quality and are all having good sales on at the moment.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 06/01/2019 13:23

I have 4 ted baker bags that I bought cheap off eBay because they are 2nd hand. I suggest you look on eBay you could get quite a few bags for your money. Happy birthday.

Grumpasaurus · 06/01/2019 13:24

Ps don't list to the handbag Scrooges! A well made designer handbag is a thing of art! I often buy mine in the sales and then when I want a change, can sell them for more than I paid for them.

jewllerybox · 06/01/2019 13:26

Shootfirstaskquestionslater I've been putting a couple of bids in but they seem really popular - think I would feel better buying a better one second hand.

I have 2, a large one that was £200 and a smaller one that was about £120 and I love them both. I hardly ever use any of my other bags anymore. Im happy to spend more on a bag as it always fits when my weight changes.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 06/01/2019 13:28

If having that bag would make you feel good every time you wear it, then no, it’s not a waste of money.

Have you seen it in person? Have you checked that it’s reasonable quality for the price? Is it a style of bag that goes with your general style?

If yes to each of the above then absolutely, buy the bag!

pigsDOfly · 06/01/2019 13:28

Whether it's viewed as a waste of money is relative.

I could easily spend £200 or more on a handbag but I wouldn't because to me it would be a waste of money as I have no desire to own a designer handbag costing that much when I can get a lovely handbag that I'm happy with that does the same job for a great deal less; recently bought two new handbags in a sale, one cost £16 the other £48. More than happy with both.

If you can afford it and want to treat yourself then it isn't a waste of money.

If however, buying it means that you live on baked beans on toast for a month then I'd probably think it's a waste of money, but to you it might be worth the sacrifice. As I say it's all relative.

Calvinsmam · 06/01/2019 13:31

House of Fraser have a ridiculous sale on at the moment, they had coach handbags in for £160 yesterday.

I don’t go for designer handbags normally but I got a ted baker one when I was in my early twenties and that bag brought so much joy to me. I loved it and used it to death.
Get one if you want one!

RJnomore1 · 06/01/2019 13:31

Ted baker bags are very pretty. If you want one and can afford it don't bother with anyone else just get it.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/01/2019 13:31

Oh god Seniorcitizen there is always one.

MeredithGrey1 · 06/01/2019 13:32

Ted Baker have a sale online at the moment, I got a new winter coat half price so maybe see if that includes handbags if you don’t want to spend too much?

Obviously you can always look at it as “there’s no need to spend that much on a handbag” which is true but equally if you can afford it, will use it and it’s a treat, why not?

CrazyOldBagLady · 06/01/2019 13:32

I find the post upthread suggesting a £20 handbag quite extravagant to be honest. At Morrisons you can buy a bag for life for 10p and it will carry your purse and keys just as well. They are fully waterproof too, so are handy for stowing your things in a canoe. You might even be able to find a well cared for one on ebay.
