To borrow the kids Xmas money

festigirl14 · 06/01/2019 08:20

DP hasn’t been paid properly in error this week- it will be rectified next week but its left us very short after Xmas and i need to buy food.

Would it be terrible to borrow the cash the kids had for Xmas to buy food until next week when I can rectify it? Feel terrible doing so

You need food for your family and can replace the money next week. YANBU.

scarylea · 06/01/2019 08:21

Absolutely not terrible. If it were to buy unnecessary items that may be different but it’s food to feed your family.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 06/01/2019 08:22

If you are going to pay it back I don’t see the issue.

I’m sure the kids would rather eat.

ElfridaEtAl · 06/01/2019 08:22

Of course not. Like you've said you'll be putting it back next week.

If you genuinely need it and there's no other way and you can and will replace it next week then do so.

If any of the above is doubtful then don't.

strawberrisc · 06/01/2019 08:26

If you don’t borrow the money you couldn’t feed the kids! I’ve left IOUs for my DD before for travel. Always paid it back.

babbi · 06/01/2019 08:27

Of course you’re not unreasonable.

PumpkinPie2016 · 06/01/2019 08:27

As long as it is paid back, in full next week then I think it's ok. Don't 'borrow' it if you can't or won't pay back next week though as it's not fair on the kids.

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2019 08:29

What’s the alternative? No food?

Borrow then return when the pay error is fixed.

KanielOutis · 06/01/2019 08:38

Can you borrow it now and plan ahead for next year. If money is so tight that the only way you can eat is to dip into the children's money, can you put £2 per week away now knowing that January is always tight.

festigirl14 · 06/01/2019 08:40

@kaniel yes, am about to do a proper financial plan for the year to make sure this never happens again!

gingajewel · 06/01/2019 08:40

Have you read the op first post? She has explained why she hasn’t got the money and it’s a wages error??
I would absolutley, it’s only for a week!

BikeRunSki · 06/01/2019 08:41

The children will benefit from food!

Monny1 · 06/01/2019 08:57

Yes, do it.

IHateUserName · 06/01/2019 08:59

YANBU. You & the children need to eat. I know you feel terrible & probably guilty too, but this situation isn't your fault. Flowers

70sbaubles · 06/01/2019 09:00

Even if you couldn't pay it back feeding them is what you must do.

Boysandbuses · 06/01/2019 09:00

I would say do it. Except when people get I this situation they often can't pay it back.

Do it, but be honest about wether you can afford to pay it back when his wage is rectified. Sometimes situations like this can lead people down a road of long term financial problems, through no fault of their own.

Billben · 06/01/2019 09:00

No need to agonise over this. Buy some food and replace the money next week. I’m sure your children would tell you to go ahead with it as well once their tummies start rumbling.

Dollymixture22 · 06/01/2019 09:00

Of course - why go into debt if the money you need is available in the house?

It’s a crap time for an employer to get the wages wrong.

If the kids are young they won’t know anything about it. If they are older give them a rough explanation that doesn’t worry them.

Hope it all works out.

SoyDora · 06/01/2019 09:01

I can’t see why this would be an issue? What’s the point in you all starving while the cash is sat there?

ShatnersBassoon · 06/01/2019 09:04

Even if you couldn't pay it back feeding them is what you must do.

I agree.

Zoflorabore · 06/01/2019 09:05

I've done this and paid it straight back but I did ask my ds as he is older ( nearly 16 ) and he didn't have a problem with it.

You all need to eat :)
It's not like you're spending it on a pair of shoes for yourself.

TheBigBangRocks · 06/01/2019 09:39

Your financial issues are obviously deeper than a weeks wage gone wrong. Having no back up savings for a rainy day for when there are children involved puts them at risk.

I couldn't take their money, I'd be asking his employer to correct the error by same day bank transfer then sitting down and working out a plan to ensure i was never in a situation again where I couldn't feed them.
