AIBU as a mother to think there is nothing better than watching your 15 yo gangly, long-legged lovely boy tucking into a giant bowl of cereal just after demolishing a giant dinner of pasta? Grin

Ds1 - 12 eats a shameful amount of food, he is what you can only describe as a professional athlete. he plays academy and county football, and the same for athletics.

He also does at school football, hockey, basketball, cross country and table tennis. Outside of school he does football, judo and mixed martial arts.

Take today for example -

BF - poached eggs on wholemeal toast, berry and smoothie yogurt and a homemade oatmeal square (which he eats walking to school)

S - banana and small bag of pretzels, 2 x bags of haribos

L- he said he had a pepperoni panini on white , fresh orange juice, and a apple

S - yogurt, homemade strawberry milkshake, turkey slices and cheese on crackers x6, another slice of homemade oat square

T - Homemade fish pie, (salmon, king prawn, cod annd ywllow fish) with broccoli, green beans and spinach and kale

S - large bowl of coco pops, 2 x slice of toast and another apple, also 4 x digestive chocolate biscuits

His day started at 6am, at football training for 2 hours, then he had school PE, and also after school basketball. This evening he had mixed martial arts

Hes more than likely burned more calories than hes consumed.

I'm dreading when he starts puberty, multiplied by a growth spurt.

Why doesn’t anyone on MN have short / normal/ tubby sons? They’re always 6 foot 4 and proatheletes...

twinsmummy5 · 09/01/2019 14:48

My twin boys now age 11 are small for their age and were right scrawny when they were little .
They soon developed big appetites and will eat pretty much anything and everything .
They started having bigger meals , seconds , and finishing bits from mine and hubbys dinners .
We didn’t care as we were just happy that they ate so well , including lots of fruit and veg !
They barely put an ounce on over the years ... then they hit age 10 ! The last 12 months they have gained their bellies , and because it’s happened so quickly they have dimple bellies - like cellulite !!! We were happy when they started to gain weight but now it’s a worry just how quickly it’s happened !
I now have to control portions - say no to seconds if I don’t truly believe they are still hungry - and limit puddings / snacks !
I wish I had done all of this sooner so it didn’t get to this stage now and seem like I am being mean denying them food !
However they’ve handled it well as we spoke to them about weight / health etc !
They are very active do football 2-3 times per week and MMA .
The point of my post is just be careful , because as good as it is to see children eat well , it can get out of control pretty quickly ! A healthy relationship with food is a must for youngsters especially when hitting puberty !
I realised that my two just got into a habit of saying they were hungry and asking for seconds ! I now ask them if they actually are hungry and if so offer a healthier option first !
Also , just because people are slim and lean - doesn’t always mean they are healthy - you can’t see inside the body , and that’s why there’s always shock when young healthy fit individuals are diagnosed with health issues !

It's probably my faulty memory but I don't remember many short, normal or tubby boys at my children's school.
At about the same age, almost definitely in the same year, they all started to shoot up. I assume puberty was to answer.
I remember walking home late one night and meeting my son and his friends walking to the shop.4 tall boys/men all full of laughter and bonhomie
If I hadn't known them I would have crossed the road to avoid em.

Aridane · 09/01/2019 17:56

I wonder Thame, flakey!

Aridane · 09/01/2019 17:56

(the same, not Thame!)

CarolDanvers · 09/01/2019 18:05

Well my 15 year old is tall and thin, towering above me. He’s no pro athlete though as he has hypermobility and dyspraxia. I’m trying to think of I know any “tubby” kids in RL and I don’t think I do. There were none at all at primary school but there’s a few at dd’s secondary but they’re big and tall built rather than overweight iyswim?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/01/2019 18:52

“Why doesn’t anyone on MN have short / normal/ tubby sons? They’re always 6 foot 4 and proatheletes...”

Grin Erm, that’s because this is specifically a thread to exchange tall growing teen boys who don’t seem to put on any weight despite the huge amounts they eat!

Twinsmummy: in my experience age 10-11 is when a lot of boys get a bit tubby, it’s almost as if they’re laying down fat ready for the start of the big growth spurt. It has happened with both of mine and a lot of their peer group.

If they are only eating extra portions of healthy stuff rather than an extra portion of cake or biscuits then I don’t see what the problem is really.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/01/2019 18:53

Obviously this is not a thread where we can exchange tall teens. Grin. But we can exchange experiences of them!

Flooffloof · 09/01/2019 19:06

Obviously this is not a thread where we can exchange tall teens

Dang, although mine are no longer teens but I think at the time I could have happily exchanged them.
Not because food, because every person's house they went to all said how well behaved they were, and every teen I hosted was a delight.
But my own teens were all Elvis impersonators. Yup and uhh.

IfNotNowBernard · 09/01/2019 19:13

Mine's not tall and has never been tubby, he's like a whippet. I WISH he would eat more! He's only just entering puberty though, so I'm ready with the weetabix mountain ( and the massive stews..)

londonrach · 09/01/2019 19:16

My uncle used in inhale a bread loaf at that age..stick thin....no idea where he put it. As a men in his 50s hes still stick thin

Aridane · 09/01/2019 19:16

No - it's more a comment about Mumsnet generally (not this thread specifically)!,

Ollivander84 · 09/01/2019 19:26

When I was at college/uni, food was included
One lad used to eat a full English breakfast and 4 pieces of toast, cereal, yoghurt, drinks etc. Then lunch and tea. At night I saw him eat an entire 12 multipack of crisps Shock
He was about 5ft 9 and like a twig. He's 34 now and still the same Envy

Dieu · 09/01/2019 19:27

I could easily pack away 5 weetabix at once. And the rest. It's no wonder I'm such a chunk Blush
Top tip though, for those of you who are being eaten out of home (well, out of weetabix anyway!).
Tesco own brand is SO much nicer. Not the value one, but the regular one in the orange box. Even when it's been in the milk a while, it still retains some wee crispy bits.
I wouldn't go back to the branded one now.

PhilomenaButterfly · 09/01/2019 19:29

I have one who's tall and severely underweight through illness, and one who's tall and stocky. Happy Flakey?
