To ask, if you are slim, what do you think about?

Whatchathink · 05/01/2019 01:11

I am overweight. Very overweight. My weight preoccupies most of my thinking to the point where it is habitual- what will I be eating today? How many calories? How fat am I? Why can’t I just lose weight? Etc, etc etc . And on it goes.

I’m now thinking that these thoughts have become so much of life that if I were to lose weight, what would i actually think about all day? I would in a strange way, miss that fat voice!

So my question is, if you are slim, what do you think about? Does food just not really register at all in your thoughts?

You may have a point there Wearywithteens . I really do love food and cooking and talk relish mealtimes but I absolutely hate feeling stuffed so hardly ever clear a plate. We were brought to see fizzy drinks/crisps/snacks as treats and not the norm though and I genuinely don't desire them. DH does though, would work his way through a six pack of pork scratchings/space invaders in minutes.

Time40 · 05/01/2019 01:52

I think about food quite a lot. I think about what I'd like to eat but I'm not going to, or I think that I'd like some more of the nice thing I've just eaten, or I think that I'm hungry but I can't have anything else to eat, or I think that the healthy, low-calorie thing I'm eating is boring, and is going to leave me hungry. It drives me mad when people tell me I'm "lucky" to be slim. It sure as hell ain't luck.

TheDarkPassenger · 05/01/2019 01:53

I’m slim but have an ED.. food takes up a lot of my thoughts too.. whether it be what am I going to overindulge on tonight or I’m too scared to eat anything today

ChristmasSprite · 05/01/2019 01:58

Often food thinker here. Love food, love tasty good (healthy) food and sadly a soft spot for the notso healthy puds and other.

Although I don't tend to buy unhealthy or junk, foods and snacks, so there isn't anything in the house to unhealthily snack on.

Currently planning a big family meal for Sunday, and have just hosted a bit of a fine dining evening, indulging food loves, but they weren't stodgy heavy foods.

Cook from raw ingredients and commonly avoid wheat and dairy as much as possible and find that has a big impact as does the exercise.

So enjoy thinking about it, sometimes fighting with self to resist urges to goo in fridge for something extra! Continually fighting the flab, and sometimes losing. Also think about lots of other stuff, but are not to think about food, although yes, also guilty of forgetting meals making insufficient as so caught up with other things.

ChristmasSprite · 05/01/2019 02:01

No biscuits, crisps, ice-cream, cream, deserts, etc in house.

Have some Christmas cake leftover still, and a very rich Christmas pud to finish too!

So did have a slice of that with custard tonight, over indulgence!

starzig · 05/01/2019 02:02

I have lost a lot of weight previously and the exact same thoughts preoccupy your head. You still think do I look fat? How many calories? What should I eat at next meal? Can I lose a little bit more this week to give me a 'cushion' etc...

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/01/2019 02:06

I think about food all the time. Im a chef so I’m either menu planning, ordering, or cooking and even then I’m thinking about what to have myself when I get home 😂

Candolim97 · 05/01/2019 02:19

I have always been naturally skinny (similar size to Kate Middleton), and yes I still do think about what I eat. I worry about eating too much sugar or foods with a high GI because I have pcos

My pcos symptoms are very bad (severe hirsutism, bad acne, greasy scalp and skin). I’d much rather be a ‘normal’ woman with being overweight as my biggest concern

Adversecamber22 · 05/01/2019 02:24

I am slim and have never been overweight. When thinking about food I tend to think about what I can try that I haven’t before plus what I can do for the family dinner.

My father was Chinese and my Mother English, they both taught me how to cook, well it was more by watching. So I’m confident with British traditional and a lot of Chinese dishes. Planning Christmas dinner is a walk in the park compared to the planning for the Chinese New Year dinner.

WeightWatching2019 · 05/01/2019 02:27

I wonder if men have all these food thoughts?

AGnu · 05/01/2019 02:36

I rarely think about food. My DC let me know when they're hungry if I don't notice the time & forget to get food on time for them. Sometimes I remember to feed myself when I'm feeding them but usually I forget at lunchtime. I get their food ready so they can get on with it, then the baby needs feeding/supervising & then it's time to clear the table... It's not unusual for DH to come home in the evening & me to have only eaten one piece of toast at 8 in the morning. It's worse if we're out or busy, it just doesn't factor into my thoughts at all.

Mostly what I think about is "why are the DC so loud?" "Why have they gone quiet?" "Am I going to go into the other room & find they've somehow silently died?!" "Am I failing them?" "When should the baby go down for a nap?" "How long should the baby sleep for?" "Is there any point trying to go to sleep now or is the baby about to wake up?" "Why is the baby not asleep at 2.30am?!" "I'm so tired."

I may be slim but we all have our issues!

moredoll · 05/01/2019 03:12

I think about food and enjoy it but I like being slim so when I put on weight, as I have over Christmas, I cut back straight away. Cut out alcohol, cut out anything with sugar, cut back on anything with flour, cut back on dairy.

ChristmasArmadillo · 05/01/2019 03:14

When I’m not eating I’m usually thinking about what to cook/fix/eat next. I really love food. I’m just lucky with metabolism.

FloydWasACat · 05/01/2019 03:33

I am 8 stone, 5 ft 4. I enjoy food (especially cheese) but other than that: food is what you need to it. That's about it. Also, for some reason I am savoury and not a sweet person so don't eat much chocolate, pastries etc. Just because I don't like them. That's it really, not a choice but just me I suppose?

FloydWasACat · 05/01/2019 03:35

eat not it

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 05/01/2019 03:46

I’m a petite size 6. I never think about food unless I’m about to eat it; I think of pretty much anything but. It actually rather amazes me how much food seems to control so much conversation.

kateandme · 05/01/2019 03:53

i think your kind of thinking is a poorly kind because its not food your thinking of but your association to it and the guilt/weight/shame etc.so you not thinking of the goodness.the taste the health it brings but more how many calories.sizes and how big it means you are and then how bad you feel and this isn't nice on you.im sorry you feel like that.you don't have to think like that towards stuff that keeps you alive and is made to taste lovely.
easier said than done when your in the place you are.and im sorry for that.becaue I no you say you might miss it but what if you coukd think of it and urself in a nice way.then it wouldn't be intrusive and you I promise you because of how you feel about u and life would deff be bale to fill ur thoughts and hours with many other good thingd

squeekums · 05/01/2019 03:56

Im slim, size 6 as a rule
I barely think about food, can go a whole day and not even feel hunger. Some days i have to remind myself to eat dinner. I have pretty basic food likes and dont get into the whole fad food, super food, trendy shit.
Im lucky i have good genetics, a fast metabolism and small appetite

MrsCatE · 05/01/2019 03:56

@Whatchathink. Oh dear, a lot of stealth boasting and weird replies!

Food seems to be comfort / protector to you? If that resonates, would you consider going to the GP so you can be referred to a nutritionist / medical professional to explore the root causes further?

Meanwhile, do think of food but try to prep in advance so not tempted to buy sugary, fatty (and expensive) food when out.

I'm small and I never eat low fat / diet anything.

I do meal plan - to a certain extent for budget purposes.

Do you have breakfast? If not, try and get into the habit. It's the the only time I would advocate eating when perhaps, initially you don't feel hungry!

I have a massive bowl of fruit (whatever's in season and some frozen berries), with muesli and full fat bio yogurt.

I should make own museli but don't, i just ensure supermarket brand / premium hasn't got any additional sugar by stealth.

If you're not used to it or think you haven't time, just set some time aside for breakfast.

tolerable · 05/01/2019 04:03

you have to focus on distraction..first you have to just ........stop... clean your teeth .. then stand utterly naked at the window ,naked...see what kinda crowd you get. it is what it is.. ../.AACept what you cant change..change whatchu can.realise the difference........................ i.stole some of that plan..opt for metaphorically....dont fight yourself.look at yourself.do whatever comes next.

kateandme · 05/01/2019 04:04

for every bad or dark though you have abot food, caloies or yourself what would be the opposite.keep thinking what the opposite would be every time.

FortunesFave · 05/01/2019 04:17

I don't think about it other than to consider what I will make for the family's dinner.

Lunch and breakfast they're expected to sort themselves.

I think about my work a lot...and about the house...how to improve it and tidy it more.

I love my work and I suppose that's why I think about it a lot.

Hannnnnnnxo · 05/01/2019 04:22

I’m sure some slim people think about food just as much as you do!

I’m slim (size 6) and I would say I have a healthy mindset to food. I know I have to eat and I hate skipping meals, so I don’t avoid food at all. I like trying new things/eating at new restaurants so tend to get more excited for those meals rather than the mundane stuff. I eat whatever I’m craving/want, but within reason as I’m generally aware of how much calories are in whatever I’m eating. Something unhealthy that I do is eat out/buy premade food as I’m shit in the kitchen and it’s just a bad habit I’ve picked up from being constantly busy - and living in London where there’s always somewhere to buy dinner rather than cook! I always make sure i eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and water though, I feel guilty if I don’t. In fact if I have days of eating constant junk I feel sluggish and literally like shit

Whatchathink · 05/01/2019 11:05

Thank you. Some really fascinating replies.
Yes, I think I am fixated in food, it’s interesting to see that for other people food just isn’t something they really give much thought too, although it seems that many of us do either to lose or maintain weight.
It would be interesting to see if men have them same sort of thoughts.

I lost a substantial amount of weight very rapidly previously and it was shocking how differently you are treated. When you are overweight you become invisbale but all of a sudden I was being stopped by men in the street and asked out on dates or treated more favourably at work. It was bizarre and I think I was a little pissed off that I was the same person I was covered in fat but people were nicer! I don’t think I coped well with that actually and the weight went back on!

I will definitely try the distraction techniques and on fuelling my body not feuding my negativity
