DSD (7) and I have been watching music videos for the past 20 mins.

So far I've showed her Elvis, Queen, MJ, Aretha Franklin and The Beatles.

Can anyone name a few more for me? I've drawn a blank!

More controversially, Stock Aitken Waterman.

From the Beatles & Stones through to the 80s, most mainstream artists wrote their own songs. SAW changed all that. They went back to the Phil Spector model where the writers and producers were the real creative talents, and the singers were interchangeable puppets who sang what they were told to sing. SAW made pop stars out of models, teenage Aussie soap actors and even the office teaboy (Rick Astley).

Did all these suggestions change music or are people just listing favourites? Grin

I'd agree with:

Prince
David Bowie
Nirvana
Madonna
Also, yes, the Spice Girls

And I'm not sure if I think they changed music but ABBA are worth a shout!

Glenn Miller — he arranged pieces in a different way and got a whole new sound out of his orchestra.

And not a musician, but Thomas Edison changed music forever when he invented the phonograph.

Link Wray, Chuck Berry, maybe even Fats Waller.

waxy1 · 05/01/2019 21:24

Have I got to justify it?

Link Wray was not the best guitarist but he was the first rock guitarist.

Chuck Berry’s early records, stage performances and prodigious songwriting were just... prodigious! Listen to the piano on a 1950s Berry record.
