Bobble hats with faux fur pom poms - this JUST CAN'T be right....can it?!

I already have a knitted bobble hat with a lovely soft faux fur pom poms but went out shopping without it yesterday as it was mild when I left. A few hours later, it had got colder and colder, so when I saw a lady selling this type of hat in the street from one if those mobile cart things, I decided to buy one. I chose a grey one with a natural/taupe coloured faux fur bobble and paid £5 for it. I told the lady I didn't need a bag as I wanted to wear it straightaway and commented on what a lovely big soft pom pom it was. The lady was foreign and quite heavily accented and agreed that it was lovely and said something I didn't understand so I just thanked her and walked away. You know when you sometimes then re play what someone said afterwards? Especially when you're not sure you heard correctly? Well, I then realised what she had said. She said "it's lovely. Real" (?!!) WTF? This CANNOT be right can it? It is exactly the same as all the ones in the shops...I am absolutely horrified as surely these pom poms are faux fur? Shock

The leather trade is horrific. And a far cry from the 'by product of the meat industry' misnomer.

tinstar · 05/01/2019 16:28

Because they like them, obviously.

Er, well obviously. But why?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 16:38

Because they like them Confused What else is there to say or understand? Why does anyone buy a particular style?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 16:40

I've made hats and out a big fur Pom Pom on top. Why? Simply because I like them. I can't think what else I'm supposed to say.

I’ve got a Pom Pom bag charm, it’s so soft. It feels like cat fur. I can’t bear to think it’s real.

tinstar · 05/01/2019 17:38

But it's not really a style is it - it's just a thing stuck on top of a hat. No need to get your knickers in a twist Soupdragon - I'm just trying to understand the appeal.

blackteasplease · 05/01/2019 17:40

Oh god I have a pin pin hat! From accessorize though so should be safe?

Thewifipasswordis · 05/01/2019 17:40

Most of the 'fake' ones on the high street turned out to be real fur when tested in a lab. Real fur is cheaper than fake now.

Thewifipasswordis · 05/01/2019 17:41

@Doggydoggydoggy it's crueler. Do your research.

I think there's more and more fir anyway. I quite like the hats for babies with the two pom poms but not buying one in case.

Another child gave my daughter this fluffy rabbit thing that to me is too big to be a bag charm but it has a key ring attachment on it so think that's what it's for.

I hate it because the minute I felt it, I thought shit that's fur. I don't know what to do with it. Haven't done any tests on it but it's soooo soft. It's dyed bright pink. Want to chuck it away but my daughter hasn't seen the other child yet and worried they'll ask about it.

Dongdingdong · 05/01/2019 17:58

Oh god, I had no idea this was a thing. Absolutely disgusting! Why doesn’t the government introduce stricter controls over this? Anyone found to be selling it should be issued with a very hefty fine.

WindyWednesday · 05/01/2019 18:55

Checked my Pom Pom. Think it’s ok.
Blunt ends and no leather underneath.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 20:34

But it's not really a style is it - it's just a thing stuck on top of a hat.

Of course a hat with a Pom Pom on it is a "style" in the same way as jeans with diamanté on or boots with a decorative cuff. I truly don't get what there is to understand about it - it's just a style of hat people like.

No need to get your knickers in a twist

They aren't Confused.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 20:35

Anyway, all of mine are fake.

tinstar · 05/01/2019 21:15

Well it depends how you're defining "style" really Soupdragon ....

RomanyRoots · 05/01/2019 21:31

what about Primark, supermarkets,

RhiWrites · 05/01/2019 22:53

Mumsnet just served me an ad for merino wool with possum fur for reading this thread. Sad
