Bobble hats with faux fur pom poms - this JUST CAN'T be right....can it?!

I already have a knitted bobble hat with a lovely soft faux fur pom poms but went out shopping without it yesterday as it was mild when I left. A few hours later, it had got colder and colder, so when I saw a lady selling this type of hat in the street from one if those mobile cart things, I decided to buy one. I chose a grey one with a natural/taupe coloured faux fur bobble and paid £5 for it. I told the lady I didn't need a bag as I wanted to wear it straightaway and commented on what a lovely big soft pom pom it was. The lady was foreign and quite heavily accented and agreed that it was lovely and said something I didn't understand so I just thanked her and walked away. You know when you sometimes then re play what someone said afterwards? Especially when you're not sure you heard correctly? Well, I then realised what she had said. She said "it's lovely. Real" (?!!) WTF? This CANNOT be right can it? It is exactly the same as all the ones in the shops...I am absolutely horrified as surely these pom poms are faux fur? Shock

I wouldn't buy cheap fur trimmed items but I have no issue with fur if it's ethically sourced

Those suggesting that you donate real fur items to charity... I work in a charity shop and we have a strict policy of not selling anything that is real fur. It has to go straight in the bin. And we get charged by the bag for our rubbish. So please bin it yourself if you don’t want it 🙂

Ethel80 · 04/01/2019 21:11

Oh no, I'm really worried about my Accessorize bobble hat now, l love it.

Fashionista101 · 04/01/2019 21:53

OP 100% real. Crazy really when you think of the cost of a no fur moncler coat and a fur moncler coat. That was just £5?!

spugzbunny · 04/01/2019 22:14

I'd bet on that not being real. If you can get a pic of it with you parting the hair like your trying to see the base of the hair. As you would a cat when trying to apply flea treatment if you've ever done that!

spugzbunny · 04/01/2019 22:16

@planespotting I'm not saying it doesn't happen ... I see it a lot in craft fairs for example and market stalls but you said that most fur on the high street is real which is BS. Top shop, accessorize, M&S etc are simply not selling real fur. It's far too risky as it's actually very easy to spot.

SlugsyMalone · 04/01/2019 22:50

There’s no such thing as ethically sourced fur.
Unfortunately wearing fur seems to be becoming more normalised again thanks to the likes of Canada Goose, I can’t work out if people don’t know it’s real or just don’t care. I’d like to think it’s the former but I suspect with many it’s the latter.
At least you’ll know for next time OP.

Natsku · 05/01/2019 07:06

Sure there is ethically sourced fur - reindeer that live semi-wildly and then are killed for food and their fur is used also.

floribunda18 · 05/01/2019 07:23

I was aware of real fur being passed off as fake, but only from Mumsnet and only recently from a similar thread. I don't watch Watchdog or read newspapers.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 05/01/2019 07:51

I don't get why the fur is such an ethical no-no when this hat will have been made from unsustainable acrylic in a sweatshop and then shipped halfway round the world.

SlugsyMalone · 05/01/2019 08:04

I think if you google how the animals used for the fur trade are kept and the methods by which they are killed, then you’ll understand why people find it unethical TaMere, it’s truly awful.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 05/01/2019 08:06

I do think it's unethical. I just think it's less unethical than the other aspects.

adaline · 05/01/2019 08:19

Fur and down have their issues but microfibres have just as many problems. Fleece, insuloft, primaloft and all those artificial replacements for down are bad for the environment and release loads of microplastics.

And as someone who owns both artificial and down filled costs there is no comparison when it comes to warmth.

SlugsyMalone · 05/01/2019 08:40

I don’t use any animal products at all but I do get the dilemma between using man-made alternatives for down/ wool etc and using natural materials that will biodegrade. For me the animal’s welfare will always win out, but I don’t buy things lightly and when I do, I use them until they fall apart.
Personally I’d rather be slightly less warm and know that nothing has suffered to make my coat.

Flossmequick · 05/01/2019 08:43

Dogs are bred for their fur. Its sick.

bumbleymummy · 05/01/2019 09:20

That looks real to me. How awful. I hate that real fur is creeping back in.

Harebellmeadow · 05/01/2019 13:41

Just checked my h&m bobble hats - phew - they are fine!!! Next my h&m pompoms and all my coat hoods.
When i was younger i swore if i was gifted a fur coat i would give it a funeral. Now i think i would prefer to find someone to give it to and asking them never to buy new fur.

In medieval times the plague was also spread by the fashion for squirrel pelts and trade of it across Europe. Northern/scandi fur was highly desired because it was the warmest. Cant remember which story i read about a greedy daughter in law insisting on keeping the squirrel coat but them dying of the plague.

userschmoozer · 05/01/2019 13:45

That looks like real fur, and the hairs are a bit long for rabbit.

Doggydoggydoggy · 05/01/2019 14:22

That fur in the picture looks definitely 100% real to me and it’s definately not rabbit.
Rabbit is plush and short.

That fur clearly has long guard hairs.
Likely raccoon, cat or dog.

Like pp I also have no problem with genuinely ethical fur, but it is VERY difficult to find.

Fake fur is quite horrific also, it’s entirely plastic, polluting the planet and there are usually human rights violations in its manufacture.

tinstar · 05/01/2019 14:35

Leaving aside the cruelty and ethical issues, why do people want to wear hats with silly big Pom poms on them? Confused

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 14:38

Because they like them, obviously.

MissMisery · 05/01/2019 14:56

I assume anyone who is appalled by the wearing of real fur feels the same about leather? (Burn the fur off your Pom-poms and you’ll find the same stuff your shoes are most likely made of)

Doggydoggydoggy · 05/01/2019 15:03

Leather cows aren’t usually kept in wire crates and electrocuted to death..
Most leather is far from ethical, but it is not as cruel as farmed fur I don’t think
