Aibu to say the new Mary Poppins film is rubbish!

...just that really (lighthearated)

I love musicals and I was really excited to watch the new Mary Poppins film yesterday.
To be fair, Emily Blunt was excellent in it but all that did was emphasise how bad everyone else was...
Angela Lansbury was...terrifying....as was Meryl Streep.
All I could think about when watching Ben Whishaw was 'A very English scandal' which kinda ruined the wholesome feel.

Anyone else waste 2 hours of their life watching this film?

Sounds like Mr Banks was a more realistic portrayal of the authors father. The film ‘Saving Mr Banks’ is a much better film to watch.

I thought it was awful too. I was disappointed as I thought it would have the charm and humour of Paddington, which I absolutely loved.

Michael was wet and irritating, Mary Poppins had the sterness of Julie Andrews but without the fun and magic and her accent was most peculiar. I couldn't stand the Jack character either. He certainly didn't carry off a cheeky cockney persona, which is not surprising as he's from New York.

They seemed to shoehorn in American actors, presumably for the US audience but it really didn't work. The Meryl Streep bit was woeful.

Emily Mortimer was the only actor with the charm and warmth you need for this kind of film. Colin Firth was a decent baddie but again the script wasn't funny enough for him to do much with.

It's a shame because it could have been amazing with better casting and a more amusing, warmer script.

I enjoyed it.
Cried with nostalgia near the beginning.
Then had lovely sleep.
Thoroughly enjoyed (and much needed)!

Jane character was brilliantly close to her younger counterpart (in original) which prompted tears.

Emily Blunt had no sparkle of warm wit or mischief about her.

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/01/2019 06:18

I’m seeing it tomorrow, love the original film, disliked the stage musical so I’ve not got high hopes for this. From the trailer, Emily Blunt reminds me of how Laura Michelle Kelly portrayed MP on stage and I couldn’t stand her. I LOVE Angela Lansbury and Lin MM though so maybe they will redeem it for me!

interestingdays · 05/01/2019 06:25

Reading through thread it seems quite a few of us were treated to a good sleep during the film. Not a bad thing Wink. I'll take a nap where i can as sleep is so precious and rare a thing!

Comments on Michael's character are interesting. Having watched original obsessively as a child, wet and weak is exactly how he was back then so is good continuity I'd say!

BasilFaulty · 05/01/2019 08:12

I also found it difficult to watch Michael as the last time I saw him on screen Jeremy Thorpe has a tub of Vaseline I’m his hands

Grin aaghahhaahahahhaahhahahahhahahahhahahhaah

duplodancer · 05/01/2019 08:15

Preferred it to the original. Loved the songs, loved Emily Blunt. Wasn't sure about the cameos myself.

Groovee · 05/01/2019 08:18

Mary Poppins is my favourite film. I loved the sequel but Emily Blunt's accent was to marbles in the mouth for me.

I did hope Katie Nana may have got a mention.

Monestasi · 05/01/2019 08:44

I was willing it to end two thirds of the way in.

Emily Blunt's accent was ridiculous.

Our popcorn was delicious!

MawkishTwaddle · 05/01/2019 08:50

I enjoyed everything about it except Emily Blunt’s performance as Mary.

She was mannered, self-conscious, far too posh and a bit too sexy. Mary Poppins doesn’t walk with a wiggle!

I can’t understand why she didn’t just use her normal accent. She’s hardly a guttersnipe. Instead we had a young Edith Evans.

The only time she seemed to relax and enjoy the role was when she went all Cockney for the music hall bit.

She made me feel tense throughout.

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 05/01/2019 08:53

I really enjoyed it. I was worried I'd be bored then held captive in the cinema but I wasn't at all.

The thing is Emily blunt is great but for some reason I couldn't get over her face and nose. She's beautiful actress but ja is just so pretty and her nose is perfect.
Silly I know Grin. I also disliked the sister role. And thought Ben could have maintenened his artistry scrappyness but could have had a good hair cut!!

AnnaMariaDreams · 05/01/2019 08:54

DS loves it. I thought it was OK but I fell asleep in the middle.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 05/01/2019 09:03

I quite liked parts - the part that annoyed me was Jane & Jack getting together. A MC girl & chimney sweep - wouldn’t happen. Dh & dds said - so the the cartoon bits, flying with balloons, Meryls character, flying nanny - all that would happen & you’re saying a chimney sweep & mc girl wouldn’t get together!

We gave it 7/10. I was sobbing in parts though, in the attic especially. Where the lost things go. 😥

MawkishTwaddle · 05/01/2019 09:04

I cried when Dick Van Dyke turned up.

Juanbablo · 05/01/2019 09:12

I quite liked it, DC's enjoyed it. Nowhere near as good as the original but still a good watch.

CarolDanvers · 05/01/2019 09:23

I thought it was lovely. I liked how the background music was from the first film, I loved the little nods to the first film and thought Emily Blunt was perfect. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the BMX style biking number, I just don't think it fit and they were clearly desperate to do something as good to the sweeps Step In Time number, that wasn't it.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 05/01/2019 09:42

Loved it which surprised me as I grew up quite indifferent to the first one. Children loved it ( and I made them go as they refused the Panto this year ). Cinema was packed and the film got a round of applause at the end which I’ve never experienced before.

southeastdweller · 05/01/2019 09:44

With all that money ($130,000,000), the books to draw on, and one of the most beloved fictional characters of all-time, this shouldn't have been the disappointment it was. The story is almost non-existent, most of the songs boring and E.B's Mary aloof, too stern and posh. She's being tipped for an Oscar nomination which is ridiculous. Meryl Streep was great as usual but her bit was pointless.

Something else that annoys is the slightly raunchy music hall scene, which seemed designed to showcase the talents of LMM. Very distracting.

Nice costumes, though, and 'Where the Lost Things Go' is decent.

Pinkstars2501 · 05/01/2019 09:54

I didn’t like it much. I know it was a sequel and not a remake, but I wanted some of the original songs. I wouldn’t watch it again, not a patch on the first one.

I loved Angela Lansbury, but have to admit all I could think was “Mrs Potts”.

Helipad · 05/01/2019 09:55

I’ve always found the original bit boring Blush

We loved this one though, pure escapism. And I have a crush on EB. I agree the music hall scene was too long and Lin Manuel was miscast. His whole persona screamed new yorker not cockney and he didn’t have the charm of Dick Van Dyke.

Loved DVD’s cameo!!

Coffeeisnecessary · 05/01/2019 10:43

I loved it and cried lots at the lost things song, I thought it was very true to the style of the original whilst being it's own film. My children found it enjoyable too which is hard as they mostly enjoy paw patrol or short animated stuff so I was amazed they sat entranced for the whole film.

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/01/2019 18:28

I don’t understand why they didn’t use Angela Lansbury in the live action Beauty and the Beast, she is still more than up to the role vocally and could have been Chip’s grandma instead. I think they did a really good job overall but that ballroom scene loses so much by not having her vocals!

MrsEricBana · 05/01/2019 18:34

I didn't like it at all and didn't get why Emily Blunt had to have a fakey posh English accent when she is, erm, posh and English. I absolutely love her but her Mary was not enchanting at all. Music hall scene, Meryl Streep bit, going into the bowl - whaaaaat?? Liked Michael and thought Emily Mortimer was just lovely (and the Banks children).

pearlypick · 05/01/2019 18:35

Why I made my Mary Poppins 'a bit raunchy' - so said Emily Blunt in the Telegraph.

After that ridiculous statement - bringing sex into everything - I just thought - get lost.

2019Reasons · 05/01/2019 18:37

I saw it with four adult friends and our gaggle of DC aged 5-13 yrs, some of whom had seen the original and some not. We all loved it!

It was such a gentle, magical film, of the likes that rarely get made these days. Kids films all seem to be loud, fighty, shouty and obnoxious now. They showed the trailer for the new Lego Movie while we were in the cinema and all I can say is that I’ll have to bring ear plugs and have a nice long snooze if my DC want to see that Grin.
