Aibu to say the new Mary Poppins film is rubbish!

...just that really (lighthearated)

I love musicals and I was really excited to watch the new Mary Poppins film yesterday.
To be fair, Emily Blunt was excellent in it but all that did was emphasise how bad everyone else was...
Angela Lansbury was...terrifying....as was Meryl Streep.
All I could think about when watching Ben Whishaw was 'A very English scandal' which kinda ruined the wholesome feel.

Anyone else waste 2 hours of their life watching this film?

We loved it!

Sausagefingers9 · 04/01/2019 08:43

I’ve mixed feelings.
It’s good they went with the theme of the original, but it just didn’t have the same magic.
It was nice enough.

MummyofTw0 · 04/01/2019 08:44

I thought it was great

MakeItRain · 04/01/2019 08:45

Seems lots of people on my FB have loved it but I thought the advert for it looked dreadful when I saw that at the cinema a few weeks ago. I think I'd hate it too and will be avoiding it!

TwoGinScentedTears · 04/01/2019 08:45

I liked it but thought the opposite to you: Emily Blunt wasn't great-her accent was too hard as was her character. No mischief at all.

BishBoshBashBop · 04/01/2019 08:46

Must admit we weren't impressed. I think it has been overhyped.

notacooldad · 04/01/2019 08:47

It wasn't my cup of tea but the kids i took to see it loved it.

MonaChopsis · 04/01/2019 08:49

I found it all a bit surreal but once I consciously stopped looking for a story arc it was entertaining enough. Definitely wouldn't rewatch though.

ShatnersWig · 04/01/2019 08:50

Seriously? Even the reviewers who were lukewarm about it raved about Lansbury who was 91 when she made that cameo and when she sings she sounds almost exactly as she did as Mrs Potts at age 66. There have been reviews from noted critics saying that Lansbury and Van Dyke steal the film with their cameos!

Keep away from Twitter - it's been an outpouring of love for those two since the film came out.

Mrshoneyneedsanewhat · 04/01/2019 09:22

Agreed. Contrived storyline, could have been solved with a decent filing system. Michael Banks was a pathetic, annoying character, head in the sand, none of the backbone he’d been brought up with in the previous film. How someone could be portrayed to be so utterly unaware of their personal finances was a joke. A few decent songs but none of the magic of the original (which my DC preferred). Such a shame as I was expecting much better.

DianaT1969 · 04/01/2019 09:38

I didn't like it and neither did the children in our party.

morningtoncrescent62 · 04/01/2019 09:45

I enjoyed it. Lots of references to both the original film and the books. The songs aren't a patch on the original, but I liked the storyline and the characterisation.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/01/2019 09:48

Is Lin Manuel Miranda good in it?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 04/01/2019 09:49

YABU. Mary Poppins is my favourite film so I was worried I wouldn't like it. It's lovely.

LongWalkShortPlank · 04/01/2019 09:52

I enjoyed it a lot, so did the kids in our party. As much as I love the original it's hard for younger kids to follow because of the difference in the way people spoke when it was made. My 5 year old loved the second one, not so much the first. So to that end I think it was a lovely introduction for her.

dorsetdollymixture · 04/01/2019 14:29

SetPhasers yes LMM is really good. I did think Emily Blunt was too posh in the role, but if you try not to compare it too much to the original (it's never ever going to measure up to all that nostalgia) then it's a really great film.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/01/2019 17:15

Thanks dorsetdollymixture. I think we will go to see it.

Am a big LMM fan. Blush Grin

southnownorth · 04/01/2019 17:16

I enjoyed it, not a patch on the original but I'm glad we seen it.

Aragog · 04/01/2019 17:20

We really enjoyed it.
I found the colours in the screen were lovely and the animated section was well shot. I enjoyed the story and liked the parallels with the original worked nicely.

I enjoyed the songs during the film but they weren't catchy like the original. You don't come out singing them.

Mary Poppins herself did sometimes seem a little too 'fun' and acknowledged the 'magical' aspects of her care more than the original - so felt more like that the Poppjns person was more of a character who changes rather than the very same one who'd cared for Jane and Michael, if that makes sense.

But overall we felt it was a good film and enjoyed it as a family.

sonlypuppyfat · 04/01/2019 17:24

Hated it, so did my daughters. Boring. And the gas lighting man didn't look much like a cockney to me

Eviecee · 04/01/2019 17:27

The plot was stupid, but i didnt care. I loved it, my stepdaughter loved it, even my DP loved it and he was very not keen on going.

ButDoYouAvocado · 04/01/2019 17:29

I can't watch it because Emily Blunts accent is too exaggerated for me.

Amortentia · 04/01/2019 17:33

You are most definitely not being unreasonable' this film is astonishingly dreadful. I can’t believe how dull it was, think they forgot to hire script writers. There was no humour at all and the songs were rubbish. The Greatest Showman was equally dreadful but at least the songs were good.

Mummyshark2019 · 04/01/2019 17:35

Agree. Was total shite.

Mummyshark2019 · 04/01/2019 17:36

I actually fell asleep.
