To ask how possible it would be to be a single mother and junior doctor?

I’m a single mum to one child. I always regretted not training as a doctor and may have the opportunity to do so now as a career change. But I’m wondering if it is too ridiculous an idea because of the hours. DC would be in early primary when I was an F1. My family are hands-on and supportive, and live nearby, but of course there are no guarantees about how much they’d be able to help then. I’d plan to go less than full time a little later but not sure yet whether I could afford the salary cut in the earlier years.

I’m hoping there might be some doctors on here, perhaps even who have done a similar thing, who could advise.

I did this! I had twins in between my 4th and final years in med school. As a single mum from the word go.

Listen, if you want to do this and you know inside you that u can, then listen to yourself and NO-ONE ELSE. The number of people asking me what I was going to do about this and that and what if blah blah blah. I wished they would just shut up, it wasn’t helpful. You’ll figure it out as you go along.

It was not easy, the first 2 years working as a junior were my hardest times. But now 14 years later we’re living in beautiful Australia and I’m a GP. I have a solid job (so grateful for that now in the middle of COVID) which keeps my brain oiled, a comfortable income, total control of my working hours and best of all a happy family. Of 3. Me and my twins :) Oh and 2 dogs :) And a fish :)

If you really want it, then go for it.
