To ask what the strangest thing is that you've seen in a family home/life...

I have just seen someone asked this on an AMA on their Instagram. Their reply was walking around fully naked in front of parents/siblings/any family members.

While this is obviously okay for some, if it happened in a home I was visiting I'd be but that's just because it's not the norm in my family.

I'm racking my brains but I don't think I've ever noticed anything! But people have such different ways/customs within their home lives and routines. We all regard our own as normal without ever really knowing if what's normal to us is strange to others!

I dated a man from work many years ago, he brought me to his parents house for drinks a few dates in and on the living room walls were professionally taken nude photos of his parents I didn’t know where to look

I had a friend when I was a teenager who used the spare bedroom for her doll collection - think Annabelle and Chucky everywhere it was like a nightmare

A dining table with no chairs, all the family kneeled or stood up to eat around it including visitors and no one blinked an eye

Oh Annie you've just dislodged a memory of a friend who had me to stay for a few nights at her mum and stepdad's. They also had nude photo canvases of them rolling about on a beach all over the place! Really disconcerting, especially when you are 18!

I knew someone who had the most beautiful labrador retriever. She was also very houseproud. The dog was not allowed out of the kitchen. They had trained it never to cross the threshold of the kitchen door into the rest of the house.
Miserable for the dog, and what is the point of having a pet if you can only give it companionship when you are in the kitchen? Weird people.

My grandma had dreadful OCD and used to make the bed whilst you were in it. So you'd be lying there, you had to lie with your head on the pillow, on your back with your arms by your sides but above the covers and she'd come in and tuck the blanket in around you and fold the sheet over the top of the blanket and it had to be the right width all the way across then she'd put eh quilted thing that wasn't a quilt back on over you and the sheet and the blanket and your arms.

All the furniture was wipe clean and the 3 piece suite had plastic over it but also had those doily things over the arms and backs of the chairs to stop your hair or hands dirtying the plastic. She also had plastic runners from the front door, into every room and out along the side passage which she used to vacuum.

Every day she'd walk to the shop first thing and get the tea for that night and it would be immediately prepped and laid out in the fridge in white enamel dishes and she'd lay the table for lunch, then she'd clean for a bit and do washing, even if it were just pants and socks, then make lunch which she wouldn't eat she'd just stand over us waiting for us to finish so she could immediately take the plates to wash and the afternoon pretty much continued in the same vein of her redusting and revacuuming and wiping everything.

Even washing, which she insisted on helping with,she'd do it in a certain order so you could stand there and literally do some sort of choreographed dance around the flannel which she was scrubbing you with.

Totally bonkers.

My mum, who I never met, was pretty much like this too apparently and I know I am to some degree so I definitely think there is some sort of mental health issue that we pass down. Luckily DD is a mucky cow so it looks like she has escaped.

Probably an eiderdown. Vintage eiderdowns are very sought after now. I love them.

Or, it could have been a quilted bedspread. They tend to be big enough to cover the whole bed, including pillows and sides of the bed, during the day, and were usually made of nylon. Yuk!

I shared bath water with my ex and DC for years. I was born in 80’s and we bathed once a week never had a shower

Ex DP grew up similar so we all used to do it to save water and it wasnt until my DC were about 9 I stopped sharing their water! DC would go first then me. When I was with DP he would use my bath water after as he said he was dirtier from work than me and I was quite clean

I also used to go out with a boy whose family would run one bath and they would all go in and out of it (all adults including a BIL who wasn’t a blood relative) and it would be all grey and nasty looking. They didn’t always empty it either it would sit there for hours

When I was 18 I had a friend whose DGM decided she didn't like the French doors in her lounge - rather have the expense of removing them she got her husband to build a brick wall in front of them in the lounge and paper over it so that it looked more like a window which is what she wanted. From outside you looked through the full length glass doors at the back of the bare bricks halfway up them.

DDs BF's family only flush the toilet when they've had a poo.
'If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down' is their apparent motto.

DD says 'They must think I shit a lot'

When he stays at our house he flushes but it took DD a while to train him.

My SIL is married to an absolute arsehole, so I'll start there. Anyway... He FORBIDS their two lovely daughters from ever stepping foot into his and my SIL's bedroom, but their two DOGS are welcome to stroll in any time they wish. Honestly, WTAF.

An airing cupboard is the cupboard where the boiler is and it has shelves built around the boiler. Towels and sheets etc are put in there when they're half dry (usually from being hung outside) to fully dry out.
