Where to buy birthday cake for DH

Where do you normally buy cakes for DH birthday? Looking for something cheap from a supermarket but can't find anything suitable, they all seem to be for kids or girly ones and the only others are chocolate which he doesn't like.

Last year I got a fresh cream strawberry one from a local bakery and the year before I made one and decorated it with butter cream but don't have time to do this and am really not very artistic.

So looking for all cheap and cheerful ideas of which cake or an easy to make one.

Costco cakes are amazing huge, tasty and cheao has anyone you know got a membership?

FinallyFree123456789 · 02/01/2019 15:05

Our local ice cream shop does an ice cream cake for £8.99 which went down a treat

Sandsnake · 02/01/2019 15:06

I know what you mean - childish or chocolatey! I ended up with a nice lion birthday cake for my DH last week from Sainsbury’s - Madeira sponge with buttercream icing. Lions are a bit childish - but the cake was really nice!

Rhubarbisevil · 02/01/2019 15:06

Waitrose do generic cakes. Thank you, you’ve reminded me that my own DH has a birthday soon and needs —presents— a cake which is not Christmas related Confused

Merryoldgoat · 02/01/2019 15:08

I make them - is that not an option? Homemade are so much nicer.

brownriceandpoptarts · 02/01/2019 15:08

Waitrose definitely do more grown up ones.

I've used Tesco Finest cakes (nice flavours, not a cake snob) and layered them up and added decoration to them.

AnaVanda · 02/01/2019 15:10

Betty Crocker cake mixes are amazing. They sell the cream for them in tubs too. Carrot is my favourite. I always add walnuts too.

ToffeePennie · 02/01/2019 15:11

My dh loves a pic n mix, so we got him a sweetie traybake and just loaded the top with more sweets.
Or alternatively, they do plain, uniced cakes in Asda that you can just swirl some buttercream blobs on and top with dr oetker twiddly bits

Topseyt · 02/01/2019 15:11

Waitrose do nice ones if you have a nearby one. I don't normally shop there, but did look at the cakes for the same reasons as you.

I found a nice Madeira cake, not significantly more expensive than Tesco. There were others too - Victoria sponges etc. with jam and butter cream.

Seniorcitizen1 · 02/01/2019 15:22

Make one yourself - it is not difficult and it will be much nicer than the mass produced you get in supermarkets

HoneyDoo · 02/01/2019 15:22

Cake Box. Google them, they're nationwide.

noenergy · 02/01/2019 15:24

I should have said I'm in N.I so not Costco or Waitrose. So basically left with Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and M&S.

I can make a nice Victoria sponge it's the decorating I can't really do. Not arty at all.
But if anyone had designs of a simple cake that would be great.

Pinterest is your friend for cake decorating ideas.

SaucyJack · 02/01/2019 15:27

We just get a Colin the caterpillar cake for all birthdays. Nicest one out there.

Imalittleelf · 02/01/2019 15:28

Do you have a patisserie valerie there?

My favourite was to do 2 Jamaican ginger cakes. Put fresh whipped cream and tinned mandarin oranges in the middle of the 2 and on top. Delicious.... want one now

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 02/01/2019 16:47

Asda do a cake you can print a picture on. Both chocolate sponge or normal sponge.

We used one with a photograph of our old church for a special anniversary of it opening, and put a picture of a pug from the internet on one for ds4 for his birthday once. It doesn't have to be a photograph, it can be a random picture off the internet that means something to your dh.

Or buy it as plain (already has base icing on) and decorate to your liking.

Smurfy23 · 02/01/2019 16:51

Are there any local cake makers on a local Facebook page or something you could use?

JudasPrudy · 02/01/2019 16:51

I usually just ring up the local bakery and they have one ready in a day or 2.

Guiltypleasures001 · 02/01/2019 16:58

I had two, beautiful cakes from Marks, ordered on line to collect within 5 days.
I had the grey one for husband and the tall multiple layer rainbow cake for son
Both in November

Spanglybangles · 02/01/2019 17:04

I was considering the tall rainbow layered cake from M&S for DD’s birthday until she declared she wanted a tray of Krispy Kreme...result. 12 doughnuts with a candle in each for her 12th birthday. Was a great idea and they went down a storm.

5foot5 · 02/01/2019 17:27

M&S?

It is my DH's birthday today and I got him a "Star cake". Basically white icing with coloured starts on it. They even sold candles.

Mind you we still have loads of Christmas Cake left but it seems unfair he doesn't get a cake just because his birthday is in January.

noenergy · 02/01/2019 17:30

Will look at the M&S one or the Asda one

Do you have a Morrison's? They do fresh cream sponges with strawberries in and they are only a few pounds

MelanieCheeks · 02/01/2019 17:33

I'm in NI too, but my go-to would be Colin the Caterpillar, which doesn't fit the brief as it's choclate! Other M&S options are available.

Some Pat Vals about, worth a look. Depends on price range, I often use John at the Sugar Room for bespoke cupcakes, but he's not cheap!

Jaffacakebeast · 02/01/2019 17:36

Do you have a Morrison’s? They do really nice Victoria sponges, big 1s with cream and strawberry’s if he doesn’t like chocolate
