To not understand people that dont eat leftovers?

I've seen a lot of people say this, and wondered why? What could eating leftovers possibly do to you? Is it a fear of poverty in some way?

My sister knew a girl that would roast a chicken for Sunday dinner and only eat the breasts and throw the rest away. To me, that's madness, I'd get at least 2-3 dinners and a soup out of a large chicken.

LisaD provided your chicken is a fresh one and not already been frozen just pull apart and every last bit of meat can be used. I freeze in portions for two of us to make into a curry /pie with added veg/risotto/stir fry or a quick coronation chicken or harrisa chicken to have with salad or baked potato. If family coming round just pull out extra portions. defrost in the fridge to use the next day.All perfectly safe. From our Xmas turkey loads of meals. And got lots of little reusable containers rather than freezer bags.Hate waste.Hate loads of plastic.Genuinely shocked how much is being thrown away.

Cat2014 · 02/01/2019 21:01

Thanks, I’ll try freezing the bread. Silly question probably but Do you put the butter on straight from the freezer too when making sandwiches?

SushiMonster · 02/01/2019 21:03

Yup.

Also people that won't eat the same meal more than once (e.g. left over dinner the next day for lunch or dinner)

Mummadeeze · 02/01/2019 21:09

I don’t like leftovers, they make me feel sick at the thought of them. I also don’t want to eat the same food two days in a row. If something has been half eaten it isn’t appetising the next day.

cantkeepawayforever · 02/01/2019 21:13

Cat, if it's sliced, I find that individual slices come off the sliced frozen loaf quite easily. I lay them out on the countertop as a single layer ready for sandwiches while I eat my breakfast in the morning, and then spread them all with spreadable butter as by then they're not quite so cold. Add fillings, cut, and leave for the DCs to add to their own lunchboxes [I leave first in the morning].

Rolls I thaw briefly in the microwave.

Unsliced half-loaves i take out in the evening, and then slice and use in the morning as if they were fresh.

I love leftovers so much I was bought this book - and it’s very good.

Thank you! Hopefully less wastage here in 2019 Grin

cantkeepawayforever · 02/01/2019 21:15

Mummadeeze, but most of us don't eat leftovers in exactly that way - lots of posters have said how they use leftovers e.g. of meat to make a completely new meal the next day. We almost never eat 'something that has been half eaten' - either I cook the right amount and we eat it all, OR I plan to use what is left over from meal 1 to cook an entirely new meal on day 2.

ChibiTotoro · 02/01/2019 21:16

Hushhush I'm trying to illustrate that your logic is incredibly flawed. You're surrounded by leftovers you just choose not to acknowledge it or re-categorise it in a format more palatable to you.

PurpleCrowbar · 02/01/2019 21:18

Also if you make sarnies from frozen bread, they defrost nicely by lunchtime - it's like keeping them chilled.

Another thing I do is use a sliced loaf to make rounds of sandwiches - just plain cheese or ham - then return carefully to bread bag & freeze.

Great to grab ready made when you've overslept & don't have packed lunches ready.

ChibiTotoro · 02/01/2019 21:18

Mummadeeze I don't think any of us are referring to chicken legs that some one has taken a bite out of then put back in the fridge to be gnawed on at a later date.

Hushhush89 · 02/01/2019 21:21

@ChibiTotoro how is it flawed then? Don't get how you illustrate that just by asking if I have tomatoes and olives.... I don't think I am surrounded by left overs (technically i am as my oh will eat it but I won't)

cheval · 02/01/2019 21:21

If an animal has died to feed you, the least you can is eat it all. Landfill otherwise. Chicken leftovers are great in a curry, or with a salad. Carcass makes a great stock and then soup with some veg. So that’s at least three meals.

limitedperiodonly · 02/01/2019 21:25

Hushhush89 is one of those swivel-eyed people you get on here who say: 'I never trust chicken' it has an AK47 under its wing.

LaurieMarlow · 02/01/2019 21:28

I don't think any of us are referring to chicken legs that some one has taken a bite out of

If it was an immediate family member that had done the biting and there was a reasonable amount of meat on the leg, I probably would use it.

In a curry or something and for family consumption only. I wouldn't serve up a half eaten chicken leg to a guest. Grin

But I'm more hardcore than most when it comes to avoiding food waste.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 02/01/2019 21:30

We rarely eat leftovers the very next day, we usually leave at least one day between, sometimes two or three. It doesn’t take a lot of work or extra effort, just a little bit of skill and inventiveness.

As it happens I don’t usually mind having the same thing the next day (I low carb and often have a portion of last night’s dinner for lunch), but my OH does find it harder to stomach things twice in a row. So we wait a day or two before we have it again. Again, not difficult!

Imissgmichael · 02/01/2019 21:31

I don’t anyone should make fun of hushhush89 as it sounds like she has a phobia. Hopefully she won’t pass this very unhealthy food phobia on to her children.

Jack65 · 02/01/2019 21:32

I never eat leftovers because i just cook enough for two of us. There is never anything leftover. Veg that is going over i use making fresh soup as and when, but only make two portions. One for my partner and one for me. I very rarely have any food waste. I cook everything fesh from scatch every day. I rarely use the freezer either! It's just about what works for you.

ChibiTotoro · 02/01/2019 21:34

Hushhush by your logic anything that can't be consumed whole by you e.g. a cherry tomato is a leftover.

LaurieMarlow you are definitely hardcore Smile

Firstaidnovice · 02/01/2019 21:35

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if someone has posted a similar link, but quite a few people mentioned pizza at the beginning, which is generally not great reheated, if you just bung it in the oven or microwave. We discovered an amazing pizza reheating technique though, which means I wouldn't dream of leaving a leftover slice in a restaurant anymore Grin

Hotfootit · 02/01/2019 21:37

I LOVE cold pizza for breakfast!

Hushhush89 · 02/01/2019 21:39

@limitedperiodonly didn't say I don't trust chicken, I just don't like eating it a day after its been cooked....

tryingtosortmylifeout · 02/01/2019 21:40

I cooked a cottage pie this evening. We ate half of it about two hours ago and the rest is sitting on my kitchen counter now, still in the original dish I cooked it in and cooling down. I’m planning to reheat it for another dinner soon. A few questions:

  • At what point should I put it in the fridge this evening and should I cover it with anything like foil, or just leave it in the dish?

  • When reheating, what temperature should I set the oven to, how long should I cook it for and again, do I need to cover it in anything or just cook it open in the original dish?

  • What would be the latest I can get away with reheating it (two days? Three?) before throwing it away?

SidmouthDad · 02/01/2019 21:44

You are a bit...I love leftovers but when I was growing up in a hand-to-mouth working family leftovers were never eaten except from the Christmas joint. I realize now it was seen as a sign of 'dirty' poverty and my M&D had lower middle aspirations. Only later did I learn that it was a subject which divided the entire extended family. So we and kids love leftovers, but we would never offer our leftovers to anyone else, it would more than likely offend. We just accept that others are different, like those that constantly upgrade durables for no better reason than that they can.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 02/01/2019 21:45

I don’t think it’s fair to get on someone’s case about something that is a phobia or some kind of OCD.
