To not understand people that dont eat leftovers?

Eliza9917 · 01/01/2019 15:14

I've seen a lot of people say this, and wondered why? What could eating leftovers possibly do to you? Is it a fear of poverty in some way?

My sister knew a girl that would roast a chicken for Sunday dinner and only eat the breasts and throw the rest away. To me, that's madness, I'd get at least 2-3 dinners and a soup out of a large chicken.

@PinkPanther27 it sits in your garden, you put all food waste in it including bones and it turns it into compost. You can put mouldy or off food in, it doesn't smell (from the outside), we love ours and haven't thrown food into the household bin in about 8 years.

LASAGNA UPDATE

I froze leftover lasagna last night, after being inspired by this thread despite being in the "don't like leftovers" camp. I've reheated it today because it was so blummin delicious, with a sprinkle of water and tin foil.

VERDICT: it was very good! A bit soggier in the middle than I'd have liked but reheating it made the edges extra crispy, which is absolutely the best but of lasagna 😋

Jack65 · 02/01/2019 18:50

I have IBS and am so ill when i eat reheated foods, I just don't dare anymore. It is fairly common with ibs sufferers not to eat leftovers.

Nothisispatrick · 02/01/2019 18:51

You really don’t need a microwave to reheat. I’ve never owned a microwave and loads of leftovers.

This is a great thread - it's made me think a lot more about not wasting food. We do probably waste too much - lots of good intentions (I've got no problem with leftovers!) but not terribly organised and do end up chucking quite a bit. There's a decent bit of lamb leftover from yesterday's NYD lunch so I reckon I could make a shepherd's pie out of that!

Cold pizza, leftover roasties, bubble and squeak...all food of the gods. I make a good soup as well - much nicer than shop-bought stuff.

Luckily my kitchen is like an icebox during the winter so I never have to worry too much about getting stuff into the fridge overnight Grin

Am a bit horrified by some of these posts though...I'm hoping some are on a wind-up.

Why @hushhush89?

nothisispatrick how would you reheat a lasagne without a microwave? Genuinely asking, I wouldn’t know where to start! I mean, I still don’t think I’ll ever have leftover lasagne but it’s good to have options

MacarenaFerreiro · 02/01/2019 18:57

I am the queen of the yellow sticker. Look in my freezer, and at least 75% of the stuff in there has a reduced to clear label.

Usually when I do my weekly shop I head for the reduced section first and then shop around the bargains - so if there's a reduced roast in the bag chicken I'll get veg and gravy, or of there's meatballs I'll get spaghetti.

I'm a confident cook though and happy to use all sorts of ingredients. I also have a healthy disregard for "best before" dates.

Absolute best yellow sticker bargains ever was in Waitrose a couple of days after Burns night, they had huge McSweens haggis reduced from £9.99 to 59p. I got 4.

GunpowderGelatine · 02/01/2019 18:57

Is anyone part of the Reducing Your Supermarket Spend on FB? Everyone seems to get yellow sticker items like chicken filters for 5p! When I find them it's usually something like £2.40 reduced from £2.95 🙄

ReflectentMonatomism · 02/01/2019 18:57

I’ve just made a curry with some veg that didn’t get used for Christmas Day, and some herby mix stuff from the freezer marked best before 2015. I’ll report tomorrow if I’m dead.

I love leftovers! If we have a roast on a Sunday (most weeks) I always try to make extra roasties and veg, so we can have it gain in the week. Casseroles and bologna see always taste better the eco do time - sometimes I freeze them, more often we have them again a couple of days later. It means I don't have to cook every night, which is a.ways good! As for the people saying they can afford to throw food away so they do, I simply don't get where you're coming from. Why would you do that? I'm having leftover turkey and veg soup again tonight, because it was bloody delicious - if I want fillet steak I can have that tomorrow!

Hushhush89 · 02/01/2019 18:58

Because it's usually means it's on its last use by day, I never eat anything that has come to date.... yes I know I waste loads but that's just how I am and I know I won't change....

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 02/01/2019 18:59

That obviously makes sense, Jack.

There is absolutely no moral imperative to eat leftovers just for the sake of it. I bet that many people who don’t like the texture or taste of re-heated meat just don’t cook more than they need for one meal, for example.

What matters to me, I think, is considered living, making conscious decisions, being conscientious in those decisions, being self-aware and trying to live in a way that supports the values I live by, as much as I can, instead of letting other motivations influence me. But without guilt as a motivation. I’m not a worthy person, in fact a lot of worthiness and virtue signalling really gets on my tits. But i am a principled person, as much as I can be, with an understanding that the fact that I can afford to care means that I am hugely privileged.

Quirkyturkey · 02/01/2019 19:00

Bloody spellcheck - I really should read before posting. Ah well ....

Eliza9917 · 02/01/2019 19:02

Our reductions are rarely as good as what I see online (10/12/50p etc) but still good, sometimes you have to check the value, and check it's not just 5/10p off but generally it's worth it.

Ours is also not a crazy stampede as described above.

I buy loads of yellow sticker fish from our local Morrisons, not my usual shop but make a trip there now and again just to stock up on fish for the freezer, no idea why but there is always loads and so cheap, past best buys include a big pack of sardines that we barbecued in the summer for 29p and a whole salmon that I poached (and even the cat got fed up of salmon) for under a fiver!

Hushhush89 · 02/01/2019 19:05

I've actually got 2 packs of mince and a pack of 10 sausages in the freezer, been there since we brought them but have been there for a many months, i won't eat them but I know my husband will happily defrost them and cook them up....🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤢

SinglePringle · 02/01/2019 19:07

I’ve been round these parts since Moses were a lad and this is one of the most shocking threads I’ve ever seen. The posters who give not a flying fuck about poverty, hunger or the environment are astounding and so depressing.

Ironically, I was reading whilst eating home made chicken noodle soup - made entirely of leftovers and home made stock.

Augusta2012 · 02/01/2019 19:07

Only 2-3 dinners and a soup OP?! I get at least 10 meals for 4 out of my mumsnet chicken

Pah’ Amateurs. With my Mumsnet magic chicken I can feed 3 army battalions for 6 month, a lunch for every single school child in the UK and every hospital in patient a dinner and still have bones left for stock.

You know that story about Jesus feeding the 5,000? It wasn’t a miracle, he just had a Mumsnet chicken.

limitedperiodonly · 02/01/2019 19:09

It may sounds like I'm over exaggerating but I'm really not

I believe your torrid tale TitsalinaBumSquash but it's not like that round here.

certainlymerry · 02/01/2019 19:09

Just appallingly wasteful, especially considering how many people are struggling to eat at all.

Eliza9917 · 02/01/2019 19:09

@hushhush89 Because it's usually means it's on its last use by day, I never eat anything that has come to date.... yes I know I waste loads but that's just how I am and I know I won't change....

You can freeze it. And supermarkets will never sell anything that close to it's real date in case they get sued. All dates have some give in them, I reckon.

Also, do you never buy anything from the butcher? Without a date on it?

I try to buy as much as I can from the farm shops but recently I've been going in Tesco's for convenience. I need to get back in the local shops. We've also just had a shop open nearby where you can take your own containers and buy everything by weight ie flour etc. They are also selling milk in glass bottles that you can return.
