To think you don't need lengthy NYE fireworks

Like 20-30 minutes worth of racket at midnight. It's OTT and so unsociable.

I know this is unpopular opinion but I don't get why anyone wants to do something that imposes themselves on others, no matter what day of the year it is. Our room was lit up last night and next doors poor dog was going nuts. I've never heard anything so loud and it's def getting worse every year. I don't mind an organised display but explosives in built up residential areas....Hmm

I always think of all those for whom it's more than just inconvenient i.e old, infirm, ptsd, animals, young children, mental health issues, night workers etc

Blondebombsite83 · 01/01/2019 15:23

I meant shift rather than night workers....people who need to sleep basically

Hazlenutpie · 01/01/2019 15:24

We were up with our dog. She hates fireworks. I'm not happy about the increase in fireworks, not just NYE but Halloween and extended periods around bonfire night.

roastpotatoesrule · 01/01/2019 15:28

I completely agree, like you say particularly old people living alone, pets, people with young babies who need sleep, ptsd. And yes shift workers who are trying to get sleep. At least on bonfire night we are all prepared and it tends to happen early evening. A prolonged load of banging starting at midnight is pretty horrendous if you want to sleep. Plus if people are out and their pets are alone then the poor pets. There's enough disruption on NYE (or there was on my street) as it is with rowdy drunken parties and karaoke.

I normally like fireworks but the noise and power of them in recent years is ridiculous. They started at 8pm last night and went on until well after 1 in the morning. One of our dogs is completely terrified by them so we didn't get a huge amount of sleep because he was shaking and whining and wouldn't settle.

I think they should only be available for licensed displays. It would ensure that they are set off according to instructions, in suitable locations by people who know what they are doing, and that there is a clean up afterwards. The amount of spent firework casings and litter from them today is infuriating. One of my neighbours had a near miss with his roof, when an idiot further up the street was doing a display in his garden, but hadn't bothered to anchor them properly and a load of them ended up fizzing and burning on my neighbour's house. Fortunately it had been drizzling earlier so his roof was wet but he was - understandably - not thrilled about having to get up a ladder today and clean up all the mess and debris.

Blobby10 · 01/01/2019 15:32

Its only really been a 'thing' round here since the millenium fireworks. Before that, I used to be able to go to bed at 10pm and sleep til 5 or 6am when the kids woke up!

It really is totally unnecessary - I'm not a big fan of non-organised fireworks events anyway and the bangs are so much louder than they used to be.

lanbro · 01/01/2019 15:34

I had 6hrs, 5pm-11pm, of fireworks from my neighbours on bonfire night so half an hour sounds like a dream!

bobstersmum · 01/01/2019 15:34

I'm so glad I read this! I was laid awake last night thinking I was such a killjoy, they went on til nearly 1am here, ridiculous.

comebacksoonsusan · 01/01/2019 15:34

Omg they went on here for ages. I barely slept a wink. Feel awful today.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 15:34

Other places have easily 12-24hours of fireworks for new year. Nobody grumbling about it.

Shock what places?

Detest fireworks other than at organised displays. They terrify too many animals, veterans, old people & babies.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 16:13

Iceland, for one. There are no organised displays. The fire brigade sell display grade fireworks to the public who let them off ALL NIGHT. It’s bloody amazing.

Germany has a shit load of fireworks at new year (it's the only time of the year it's allowed) and we are united with our German neighbours in bloody hating it and grumbling about it at every opportunity Grin

ResistanceIsNecessary · 01/01/2019 17:17

Iceland still has conditions - as evidenced here

Also, my understanding is that whilst it's a tradition to do so, there are people in Iceland who don't agree with it and are lobbying for a ban - not just because of noise but also for pollution and air quality reasons. So not quite "nobody grumbling about it".

Skang · 01/01/2019 17:26

I fell asleep at about 11:45pm last night (so as not to ruin my ten year streak of being asleep when it turns midnight on NYE!) and was woken up by the fireworks at midnight. I was mildly annoyed at being woken, but that was about it.

I don't think they should be allowed except for organised displays personally, safer and less terrifying for animals.

I'm pretty sure it was an organised display that woke me though Sad Grin

Noodledoodledoo · 01/01/2019 17:41

I was in China for the festival of light a number of years ago, fireworks day and night, randomly let off in the streets whilst you were walking along. Lasted for about 2 weeks either side of the festival.

I am on the it really doesn't bother me side, I like them, I am lucky my kids sleep through them and I don't have any pets and ones I have had previously haven't been affected.

KC225 · 01/01/2019 17:42

But fireworks are brilliant

mydogisthebest · 01/01/2019 17:46

Thankfully me and DH don't really bother about New Year as we cannot go out as we have 2 dogs and selfish twats where we live have fireworks for hours on end. There were still some going off at 2am this morning.

Cornettoninja · 01/01/2019 17:51

I have posted before about how much I dislike private fireworks. I love a good display but private ones are used so selfishly and irresponsibly I would happily see them banned.

It’s not so bad where I live now but my previous house was awful for it, people seem to lose any concern for when it might be appropriate to let them off and store them for what I presume are their birthdays, exam results etc. At a compromise I would be satisfied to have the less powerful ones taken off the market, so more those fizzy things rather than the ones that shake your roof.

blobby10 I completely agree the millennium was the catalyst for fireworks becoming so common for New Year’s Eve. I genuinely don’t recall them being so prevalent prior to that.

6triesbuttingout · 01/01/2019 18:14

Started at 8 pm and went on till 2 am. We had a very upset grandson and a Very upset dog. Exhausted and it’s all started up again 10 mins ago. Grrrrrr

ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2019 18:22

I reckon noisy fireworks should only be allowed before say 9pm - and preferably only on nov 5th. Beautiful but quiet ones should be encouraged- big organised displays could surely nowadays be synchronised with music (or even bangs and whistles!) that people could listen to using headphones.

DuchessAnnogovia · 01/01/2019 18:27

For a week before bonfire night, and almost constantly every weekend since then we've had fireworks going off at night. Some as late as midnight. I'm not a killjoy by any means, but this is getting damn ridiculous. Fireworks were still going off at 1am this morning. Bugger, as I type someone is setting off more. Sod off! I've had enough.

OutPinked · 01/01/2019 18:27

At least on NYE it doesn’t go on not only on the actual day but the weekends before and after it. I hate Bonfire night a lot more because it’s never just the actual night.

I’m a huge firework Scrooge. I’ve always said they should be banned all together for personal use and public displays should only ever be on three occasions: NYE, Diwali and Guy Fawkes. Other than that, complete ban.

chuffnstuff · 01/01/2019 18:31

I sign an online petition every year, as my dog is totally petrified of them. Not to ban them, but to change to silent ones. Why the need for all the bangs is beyond me.

Funnily enough I didn't hear any last night but did in the days leading up to NYE.
