My baby smells like other people's perfume

I hate it!

Am I being unreasonable to hate it when people plaster themselves in perfume and then get it all over my baby. He smells lovely as he does normally. Of cheese.

Can't wait to bath him.

Spray him with a cheap and nasty perfume before he goes out, it should repel them.

Floppyspanielears · 31/12/2018 13:06

I remember this from when mine was a new born. It is so annoying and in my opinion Yanbu. However pre children I doubt I would have been thought about not wearing perfume before holding a baby so I doubt it's coming from a negative place.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 31/12/2018 13:07

I remember feeling this when my dd started nursery. But then I realised she smelled of other people’s perfume because they’d been picking her up and cuddling her. I’d rather that than feel she’d not been cared for.

MaryShelley1818 · 31/12/2018 13:16

Exactly what MadameGazelle said!
My 12mth old really smells of perfume when he comes home from nursery, I love the fact his Keyworker holds him, cuddles him and let’s him sleep in her arms. I feel lucky he’s held.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/12/2018 13:20

He smells of cheese? Confused personally I'd rather perfume. Who is it?

svengoren10 · 31/12/2018 13:28

Oh good god get a grip and be thankful other people are interested in your precious baby. If you carry on being this ridiculous over your child then people will very soon become uninterested

EdWinchester · 31/12/2018 13:29

As long as it’s not fags, I wouldn’t worry.

FestiveLemur · 31/12/2018 13:32

He smells lovely as he does normally. Of cheese. GrinGrinGrin

I remember this. But mostly because there is something in MIL's perfume that makes me nauseated to the point of trying not to retch. Like the smell of new carpets. 🤢

Seriously though it's nice that he's been squished and cuddled. Even if he smells like new carpets/impulse/nice perfume now.

dinodiva · 31/12/2018 14:02

I feel totally the same, even though it is a bit irrational! I think it’s worse because I’m a non-perfume wearer anyway and am not a fan of smelling it in general, least of all on my baby.

GummyGoddess · 31/12/2018 14:05

I hate this as well. They smell wrong and don't smell like my child.

I have been known to change their clothes and bathe them, I don't care if people think I'm mad. I'm sure it's instinct.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 31/12/2018 14:12

Depends on the perfume for me!

I remember when the DC were at nursery and the room workers would sniff the pile of discarded clothes at the end of the day and know from the smell which belonged to which child - they'd spent so long cuddling them they knew how their smell.

SuzieAndBess · 31/12/2018 14:17

Of cheese?

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2018 14:23

It is horrible when your baby smells of someone else's perfume. I try to remember not to wear perfume if I might be holding someone elses baby.

I also hate it when my cat comes home smelling of someone else's perfume The bastard. Angry

Does your baby really smell of cheese, or is that baby sick in his neck creases? Hmm

Dieu · 31/12/2018 14:24

God, not another precious baby thread!

Limensoda · 31/12/2018 14:25

I doubt inhaling strong perfume from people's clothes is doing a baby any good.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 31/12/2018 14:28

Why does your baby smell of cheese?

Did you mistype BabyBel?!

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 31/12/2018 14:28

My mum wears perfume that gives me a really bad headache. She knows this yet still insists on very liberally spraying herself with it before we're due to meet up Angry

Other than my mums perfume I don't really mind so much if he smells of other people.

horsesheep · 31/12/2018 14:31

Babies shouldn't smell Cheesy Hmm
Does have have sick or dribble stuck in the folds of his neck?

Valkarie · 31/12/2018 14:44

I know exactly how you feel. I don't think it's being precious and am more than happy to hand baby to people for ages and him be passed around. It's just that when he comes back he doesn't smell right and I love his baby head smell. I was sad when ds1 grew too old to smell of baby anymore too.

RogueV · 31/12/2018 14:46

All babies smell of cheese and biscuits!

Whereland · 31/12/2018 15:13

This drove me craaaaaazy when my baby was a newborn, I could smell my MIL and FIL off him until I gave him a bath. There is just no polite way to ask people not to wear perfume though!

poloves · 31/12/2018 15:18

He smells slightly of cheese after a bottle.. but it's all ok people.. I bathe him fgs.

I can't wait for his head to smell like his head again.

On the plus side - there are not a lot of grannies smelling of baby powder which is a nicer alternative to their usual array of odours!

User12879923378 · 31/12/2018 15:21

All babies smell like cheese sometimes. I think the OP might seen other threads like this where people say perfume is better than cheese or sour milk. Smile

Schmoobarb · 31/12/2018 15:22

YAB a teeny bit U but I get your point.

My two reeked of my mum’s perfume and were covered in her lipstick for months 😁
