AIBU to ask you all for your recommendations on what to do in Paris, please?

I’ve been a few times and also lived there for a couple of months a few years ago, but I always recommend the same things to people Blush

I’d love to find out about new places so people don’t think I’m a complete bore! Grin

Thanks for your help :)

You can get to Giverny from Paris in under an hour and see Monet’s gardens. Absolutely magical.

Youcancallmeval · 30/12/2018 23:33

Went to Ateliers des Lumieres recently and it was lovely.

PenguinPandas · 30/12/2018 23:40

Fontainebleu is lovely. Did boat trip on Seine once which was nice. Versailles was good.

Also love Monet's garden in Giverny, I prefer out of cities.

SerenDippitty · 30/12/2018 23:45

Lunch or dinner on bateau mouche is good.

Sparklesocks · 30/12/2018 23:51

Walking around montmatre and seeing all the artists and their work is nice.
I also enjoyed the shops and cafes in le marais, beautiful buildings to look at.

CinnamonandGinger · 30/12/2018 23:52

Thanks so much, everyone! Please do keep the recommendations coming :)

Oh and if you look spooky/macabre things the underground catacombs are fantastic - but book in advance online to beat the queue

ferretygubbins · 30/12/2018 23:56

The Catacombs were one of the highlights of our last visit - it will involve queuing as only 40 people (or something like that) are allowed in at once so either go early and wait for it to open or go later and queue. Either way you'll be waiting for about an hour unless you are very lucky/

We stayed at the Hilton, Opéra, last December. Lovely hotel. Dinner at the front (prime spot) of the nighttime bateau mouche was expensive ( about £200 per head) and food was awful.
Sainte Chapelle is fabulous. I always love Sacré Coeur and yes, Montmartre is great.
Daytime bateau mouche is usually pretty cheap.
If you don’t have loads of time the Musée d’Orsay is lovely.
Versailles has a great market as well as the place itself. It’s a beautiful city.

I was a nanny in Paris & used to walk for miles - absolutely love that city. I stayed on the left bank near (had a complete mental block so can only say the cathedral!) & there is always something going on. I also liked the area around the Sacre Coeur. And The Rodin museum is good 🙂

Thanks, everyone :)

Musée d'Orsay, rather obviously. Forum des Halles, walk to Pompidou Centre, go see the fountain with the crazy stuff next to it. Père Lachaise cemetery if you haven't yet been. Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Edif Piaf etc.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 31/12/2018 12:21

The catacombs

CinnamonandGinger · 31/12/2018 12:24

Ooh thanks! I’ve always wanted to go to the catacombs - will try and go this time.

The Theatre Rex tour is really good fun. Very interactive and the teens I took loved it. Montparnasse tower has spectacular views.

Moonstoned · 31/12/2018 14:01

Have a look and see what art exhibitions are on, especially at the Beaubourg and the Grand Palais. I'd rate the Montmartre and Montparnasse cemeteries right up there with Pére Lachaise, and I love parks like the very romantic Luxembourg (also great play area, pony rides, marionette theatre, if you have young children -- though the ancient carousel which was my son's favourite thing in Paris, had closed last summer when I was last there) and the Buttes-Chaumont. Sainte-Chapelle is lovely when quiet, at the start of the day. I could spend forever in the art museums like the Orangerie, Musée d'Orsay, Marmottan, and the Rodin museum, but there are lots of lovely, littler off the wall ones, like the Musée de Magie and almost next door, a wind-up toy museum (in the 4th), and Delacroix's studio.

My six year old loves the Jardin d'Acclimatation, and the sewer museum, and the play area in the Luxembourg.

I've not been myself yet, as it's fairly newly opened, but if you are interested in sculpture and fancy getting out of the city, there's a Camille Claudel museum at Nogent-sur-Seine, which is about an hour's train journey out of the Gare de l'Est.

NorthernFlowerHouse · 31/12/2018 15:34

I always love wandering around the marche au puces de Clignancourt flea market. Wildly overpriced but there are some gorgeous antiques and vintage clothes also nice places to eat and people watch.

HildaZelda · 31/12/2018 15:38

I absolutely love Pere Lechaise, but I know a cemetery won't be everyone's cup of tea. Only about 20/30 minutes on underground.

Calic0 · 31/12/2018 15:42

We discovered a gorgeous little restaurant very close to the d’Orsay last time we were there called Le Cinq Mars. If you order the chocolate mousse for dessert they bring you the serving bowl and leave it on the table for you to help yourself. Gorgeous food, chilled out vibe and not too pricey.

thisismadness77 · 31/12/2018 15:43

I loved the Moulin Rouge!

Panicwiththebisto · 31/12/2018 16:18

Josephine’s house at Malmaison, lovely roses in the summer and lots of artwork of Napoleon - check opening times as it closes for lunch.

RayRayBidet · 31/12/2018 16:28

Versailles, Saint Sulpice Church really atmospheric.
Musee du Moyen Age on Boulevard Saint Michel.
Tour Montparnasse for fabulous views.
Love Paris so much.

Panicwiththebisto · 31/12/2018 16:34

For children who like science - Palais de la Decouverte in the centre of Paris (the people at the front desk will point out which demonstrations you can see - I recommend the electrostatic one) and the Cite des Sciences at La Villette.

jimmyhill · 31/12/2018 16:43

Don't go to Montmartre, it's really crap.

Best views of the Eiffel Tower are from the other side of the Seine at the Jardin du Trocadero.
