AIBU to ask you all for your recommendations on what to do in Paris, please?

I’ve been a few times and also lived there for a couple of months a few years ago, but I always recommend the same things to people Blush

I’d love to find out about new places so people don’t think I’m a complete bore! Grin

Thanks for your help :)

Oh and the Canal St Martin is really nice. As seen in Amelie. Unusual example of a part of Paris that's as nice in real life as it looks on the screen.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/12/2018 16:50

Love the idea of the restaurant with unlimited chocolate mousse!

CinnamonandGinger · 31/12/2018 16:56

Oooh thanks, everyone!

St Chapelle is absolutely amazing. I'd highly recommend it.

OneStepMoreFun · 31/12/2018 17:05

Go up the bell tower at Notre Dame. You get right up close to some amazing gargoyles, just like Quasimodo did.

Some of the less famous art galleries are lovely - the Orangerie is much nice than the Louvre, or the Rodin or Picasso Museums. Check exhibitions in the Grand and Petit Palais.

Jumping in on this, any recommendations where best to stay with a 13 and 10 year old?

thinkfast · 31/12/2018 17:13

Picasso museum is a must for me

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 31/12/2018 17:22

My favourite museum is the Halle St Pierre in Montmartre. There are loads of less well known museums, the Cognacq-Jay, the Marmottan, the Cluny, the Guimet... what sort of things are you into?

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 31/12/2018 17:23

FiveGoMad try the MIJE Fourcy youth hostel which is super-central and very cheap

I really liked the Pantheon. It's a beautiful building. It's a mausoleum for national heroes of France and has a crypt underneath containing the bodies of many famous french people.

It also contains a Foucault pendulum, which demonstrates the rotation of the earth.

I found it very interesting and well worth a visit.

Daytime visit to the Opera Garnier. Paid entry but the interiors are beautiful. There's also a theatre museum section with temporary exhibitions.

Catacombs: I went in the evening and there was no queue and hardly any people. But that wasn't during high season.

If you like museums and galleries have a look at the Museum Pass website which has a fairly comprehensive list of museums. The Louis Vuitton Foundation has a gallery in a park in the west of Paris which has only been open for about 4 years.

Versailles: I can spend an entire day walking around the chateau, Trianon Palaces and gardens. Love Marie Antoinette's hamlet. If you've been before consider doing one of the tours of the kings' apartments (smaller rooms you don't see on the main visit. And you also go into the Chapel, not just look at it through the door). Costs extra to the main entry fee and you have to book in advance (online). There are tours of other areas but I don't think they run as frequently nor all available in English.

If you like doing crafts, the BHV department store is amazing. Imagine if John Lewis devoted a whole floor to art and craft materials and stationery. And DIY heaven in the basement - I've never seen anything like it.

Love love love Paris. Lived there for a bit 10 years ago and visit occasionally. All the above.
The gardens at Versailles are amazing, but check the schedule for the fountains, worth a whole day visit even if they aren't on.
If you are going anytime soon, i recommend 'Fashion Freak Show' about Jean Paul Gaultier. Brill show, I went a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.
The gardens at the louvre usually have great sculptures.
Lebanese food is popular in Paris amd pretty tasty.
Sacre Couer at night is wonderful.

Thanks so much - please do keep your recommendations coming! :)

Lunch at the Jules Verne restaurant. Lovely food, amazing views and surprisingly lovely friendly waiters

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 01/01/2019 02:36

I hate Paris long story, don't ask! but there is a little patisserie on the corner of the Place de L'Arc de Triomphe (sp?) and the Rue de St. Honore that serves the most wonderful cakes I have ever tasted Grin

BradleyPooper · 01/01/2019 02:56

Also lived there for several years, met dh there and got married there 6 years later.... My favorite place ever. Check out the Cafe Marly next to the pyramid at the Louvre - dinner on the terrace is great and the best view of the pyramid lit up is from the stairway up to the ladies' - take a photo! They also serve the largest eclairs in Paris for dessert....

Visit Deyrolle near rue du Bac for an amazing taxidermy collection, really fabulous. Then walk down rue du Bac, shop for quirky goodies at Pylones, ice cream at Bac a Glaces, then food hall at Bon Marche.

For dinner, go to the Train Bleu at Gare du Lyon. A bit out of the way but iconic restaurant and stunning stunning place with classic French dishes.

The restaurant at the Musee d'Orsay is also amazing....

Bouillon Chartier restaurant: inexpensive and authentic.
Basilique de Saint-Denis, with the tombs of kings and queens of France.

HildaZelda · 01/01/2019 11:05

Oh, also meant to mention the Lindt chocolate shop/cafe round the corner from the opera.

Rafabella · 01/01/2019 13:13

I LOVE 💕 Paris 💕!! So much to see and do. A few firm favourites for me; Jardin du Luxembourg (stop for one of the beautifully presented gelatos and sit on one of the rickety old green iron chairs by the duck pond). A lazy wander around Le Marais is just wonderful! Beautiful little shops, cafes and restaurants. Pick one of the corner street cafes in St Germain for an outdoor evening meal and people watch - with a glass of Bordeaux and home made quiche of course!! I have never queued for the Eiffel Tower; much better to see by boat in my opinion. Take one of the many from Pont Neuf it will take you just beyond the tower and back. Musee de Orangerie in Jardin le Tuileries (also beautiful for a wander, gelato) the curved Monet works there are something else. Quite possibly one of my favourite cities in the world.

ShinyMe · 01/01/2019 17:16

I really love the Promenade Plantee, especially in the spring. It's a planted elevated walkway along old railway tracks - a very nice walk with really interesting views above the streets and between buildings.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 01/01/2019 17:29

We did the evening cycle tour. Think they were called blue moon. Was fab. Also loved the Moulin Rouge!!
